Mukesh and his Composers – 44
Basant Prakash was the younger brother of famed composer Khemchand Prakash.
While Khemchand Prakash became immortal due to the popularity of songs in Mahal (1949) and among the pioneers of HFM, Basant Prakash is hardly remembered despite composing about a dozen films albeit a few were with other composers.
Whenever Basant Prakash’s name is taken, mention of his short stint with the famous movie Anarkali (1953) is inevitable. It is said that Filmistan’s S. Mukherji first approached C. Ramchandra to compose the film’s music. C. Ramchandra insisted on all songs to be sung by Lata Mangeshkar. Since Geeta Roy was the preferred singer for the producer, Basant Prakash was approached who started work on the film.
However, after just one song (two songs?), Basant Prakash due to some health reasons opted out of the film. It is also said that he quit due to differences with Filmistan.
Anyway, the producers went back to C. Ramchandra who not only had his way but also insisted that the song sung by Geeta Roy be excluded from the movie. However, for some reason the song was retained in the film.
So along with all the popular songs sung by Lata in Anarkali (1953), we have this melodious song sung by Geeta Roy.
Later on in his career, Basant Prakash composed a few good songs. But ironically and arguably, he is best remembered for the one Geeta Roy song he composed for Anarkali (1953).
Anarkali (1953) had the gorgeous Bina Rai portray the role of Anarkali in the film while Madhubala played the same role in another famous film Mughal-e-Azam (1960).
Whilst Madhubala went on to feature in many mega hits, discussed, written, and photographed extensively, Bina Rai sort of faded away from limelight with not so popular movies.
Who was the most beautiful among the two?
Well, the question itself may seem preposterous, given the immense popularity of Madhubala. But there is no denying the fact that Bina Rai was also equally if not more beautiful.
My take?
Well since I have stirred up the hornet’s nest, it is easy to guess my choice😊.
Now before I engulf myself writing on beauty aspects, let us come to the topic in hand.
Basant Prakash in his dozen odd films as composer, roped in Mukesh for just one solo. As such there is no table accompanying the post.
The film is Jyot Jale (1968). Two out of seven songs from this film have been covered on the blog. They can be found here and here.
This song was brought to my notice by Shri Sadanand ji and I requested him to allow me to present it on the blog. The song itself was known to self, but I was under the impression that it was already covered.
Popular actor Tarun Bose is very much featured in the song but has not lip-synced the song.
On screen the song is sung by a passing-by beggar.
And to the best of my knowledge, Mukesh has not given playback for Tarun Bose in any other film.
Today’s song is not so popular, but neither is it very obscure also.
Mukesh dominates the song and his voice continues to linger in the mind long after the song is completed.

Song-Aur Kitne gham uthhaaye aadmi (Jyot Jale)(1968) Singer-Mukesh, Lyricist-Govind Moonis, MD-Basant Prakash
Lyrics
aur kitne gham uthhaaye aadmi
kyun jiye
jab jee na paaye aadmi
aur kitne gham uthhaaye aadmi
kyun jiye
jab jee na paaye aadmi
aur kitne gham uthhaaye aadmi
raah bhooley jab musaafir
saamne toofaan aaye
har kadam ke saath manzil
aur us se door jaaye
door jaaye
toot kar kyun
gir na jaaye aadmi
kyun jiye
jab jee na paaye aadmi
aur kitne gham
ek sapne ke liye
is zindagee ko vaar baithhe
daanv par sab kuchh lagaaya
aur baazee haar baithhe
haar baithhe
dard ye kisko sunaaye aadmi
kyun jiye
jab jee na paaye aadmi
aur kitne gham uthhaaye aadmi
kyun jiye
jab jee na paaye aadmi
aur kitne gham
