Blog Day :

6478 Post No. : 20127

Sunday 12 April 2026 was a sad day for music lovers. Just as people were waking up to a leisurly sunady morning that they came to know that Asha Bhonsle was hospitalised following some uneasiness. Such age related problems are normal, most people thought and got on with their lives. But a few hours later, came the shocking news that Asha Bhonsle was no more. What a devastating loss for music lovers. It was on another sunday that Lata Mangeshkar had departed for her heavenly abode. That was four years ago. So both sisters have followed each other at the same age of 92.

Speaking about Asha Bhonsle will take lots and lots of words and data. She started her playback career in 1940s and continued till 2010s, staying at the top throughout. She started when India was a newly independent country struggling to come to terms with its newly found independence. Asha Bhonsle’s own personal life at that time was no different. Her personal life and profession life were no bed of roses. People look at her as a formidable singer, but I feel that before that she was a fighter extraordinaire. It was her indomitable fighting spirit that saw her overcome seemingly impossible hurdles in her personal and professional life. We have the example of other singers who succumbed to the pressures of their personal and professional lives, but Asha Bhonsle was made of sterner stuff. It is this quality in her that I find the most admirable and worthy of emulation.

Giving her best in her professional career when her own personal life was in doldrums, it is something that very few people can achieve. Asha Bhonsle could.

When one looks at Asha Bhonsle’s body of work, one realises that she has sung songs of all genre. She did not just sing for the leading lady, she also sang for not so pious female characters such as cabarat dancers and mujrewaalis. She did not just sing songs befitting Bhartiya nari, she in fact was a pioneer in singing western style songs, first with O P Nayyar, and subsequently with R D Burman.

Asha Bhonsle’s name figures in Guiness book of world record for singing the highest number of songs. In this marathon effort, she had sung lots and lots of immortal songs. Listing them at a place will take quite some effort. I will do that lengthy excercise in another post. For now, I take this opportunity to pay tributes of Asha Bhonsle on behalf of music lovers in general and this blog in particular. In this blog, we remember him almost everyday by covering her posts quite often. This blog has 3652 Asha Bhonsle songs. As many as 97 of her songs have been added this year in 103 days at a rate of almost one song daily, making her the most frequently covered artist in the blog at present.

As a tribute to her, I present an Asha Bhonsle song from “CID girl”(1959). This sombre song is penned by Anand Bakshi. Music is composed by Roshan. It is a very rare combination. These three artists seem to have collaborated together only in five movies, namely “CID girl”(1959), “Maine Jeena Seekh Liya”(1959), “Warrant”(1961), “Commercial Pilot Officer”(1963) and “Devar”(1966).

Only audio of this song is available. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.

Song-Zindagee se naata tod ke kahaan chala hai (CID Girl)(1959) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyricist-Anand Bakshi, MD-Roshan

Lyrics

Zindagee se naata tod ke kahaan chala hai
sahaara lene maut ka
laut aa
haay laut aa
andhera hai vahaan jahaan tujhko hua hai dhokha jyot ka
zindagi se naata tod ke kahaan chala hai
sahaara lene maut ka

toone samjha chaman mein khiza hee khiza hai
warna hanstee bahaaron ka sama bhee yahaan hai
dekh ab palat ke jaane waale
laut aa
laut aa
andhera hai vahaan
jahaan tujhko hua hai dhokha jyot ka

gham kee raat hee laayegee khushee ka saveraa
soyee kismat jaagegee mitega andhera
deep phir jala le aasha waale
laut aa
laut aa
andhera hai vahaan
jahaan tujhko hua hai dhokha jyot ka
zindagee se naata tod ke kaha chala hai
sahaara lene maut ka

toofaan kab tak laayega samay ka ye dhaara
tere sapnon kee naiyya ko milega kinaara
aaj ke ye toofaan kal na honge
laut aa
laut aa
andhera hai vahaan
jahaan tujhko hua hai dhokha jyot ka
zindagee se naata tod ke kahaan chala hai
sahaara lene maut ka

Thank you Atulji for posting a tribute to this legend. A true fighter. May she find peace at least now
