About this blog
I am Atul, an India based male in my 40s.My interests are similar to the interests of a typical Indian- Bollywood, cricket, politics etc.
I already have two blogs under my belt- squarecutsblog.blogspot.com is where I discuss music in general, and I used atulblog.wordpress.com for humour. Now I felt the need for a blog where I could express my admiration of certain bollywood songs that I simply love.
In this blog I will discuss some wonderful songs that I have had the privilege of listening to, over the years. Here I will discuss the songs, (including its lyrics and its translation into English), and my reasons why I like the song.I hope that there are many like minded people who will find these discussions interesting.
Your comments are welcome. Or you may email me at squarecut.atul@gmail.com
Now you can email me at contact@atulsongaday.me
Update ( on 3 october 2008 )
I thank all the visitors of this blog for their encouragement. This blog has been regularly clocking more than 300 visits daily ( best being 506 visits a day). The home page now has a google page rank of 4. Many individual posts ( posted before 14 septeber 2008 ) now have google page ranks of 3 and some even 4. All this is entirely because of the readers of this blog.
I take this opportunity to thank all my visitors and I assure you all that I will try to live up to your expectations in future also. Please give your suggestions so that I may be able to improve this blog, which is a labour of love for me.
Update on 1 January 2009
I wish all my readers and their near and dear ones a happy new year. May this new year be the best ever for you.
I thank all my readers for patronising this blog and encouraging me by their visits, comments, and farmaishes.
Thanks to your encouragement, this labour of love now has as many as 480 outstanding Bollywood songs ( as on 1 january 2009) and growing at a good pace. This blog is clocking over 500 visits daily ( maximum being 995 in one day).
I thank all my visitors once again and assure you all that I will continue to bring more such songs regularly for your reading, listening and viewing pleasures.
Update on 12 november 2009
Now, the blog has over 2150 songs as on now. The traffic has also increased. Now the blog gets over 1500 hits a day on an average and the highest hit in a day has been 2301. The blog does very well on search engines for relevant searches. It is heartening to see the blog growing so nicely. Hopefully we will have exciting days ahead of us.
Update on 28 march 2010
Since november 2009, when I posted my last update, I have slowed down in my rate of posting. Still, 2365 number of songs as of now is quite a lot of songs.
I find that the number of visitors to this blog has stabilised to an average figure of around 1500 visits daily (2320 being the highest number of visits in a day), which works out to just under 50,000 visitors per month. This blog has received nearly 7,00,000 visits since it was started.
I may have slowed down, but Hopefully it is just the lull before the storm. There are still tens of thousands of great songs yet to be covered which will take a lifetime. In other words, I will be kept busy posting songs for a long long time and there is no possibility that I will be running out of songs to post any time soon.
Acknowledgements:
In this blog, I embed audio/video links from sites like youtube and dailymotion etc. I gratefully acknowledge the efforts and contributions that the uploaders of these songs make in making these songs available to us for our pleasure and enjoyment. Without these links, this blog would not be what it is.
I also provide information about songs that is culled from different sources, mostly by googling. I acknowledge their contributions too, which helps me provide some useful information about the songs that I discuss.
PS- Sometimes I get comments where new visitors ask me to send them various songs. I will like to point it out that this blog is a place to discuss songs and I am not in a position to send links to songs or the songs themselves. As can be seen, this blog is a labour of love where I discuss songs with people (many of them becoming good internet friends with me), and not a place to share download links.
Disclaimer– I would like to believe that I have a sense of humour. Raja in fact has coined a term “Atulism” for this kind of humour. I often love to make light hearted comments about movies, songs, actors etc in my discussion of the songs. They are needed to be taken as such and should not be misconstrued as anything serious. I love to make light hearted observations and those observations need to be treated as such.
It has been made amply clear that this blog is a labour of love where we value the oldtime virtues of honesty and transparancy. By now we have a core group of regulars who are making invaluable contributions voluntarily through various means, viz sending lyrics, writeups, informations etc. Music lovers who are willing to join this music bandwagon are welcome.
Music lovers who are willing to contribute lyrics should ensure that their contributions are original in the sense that they should have listened to the lyrics themselves and noted them down. Please do not send incorrect/ incomplete lyrics copied from elsewhere on internet calling them your contributions. We in this blog are very particular about the completeness and accuracy of lyrics that are being posted.

I hope you are not sick or something, Atul, as this is almost uncharacteristic of you to not post songs for this long a period! Just in case you don’t have any good songs to post, here are two more:
Chandan ka palna resham ki dori … Hemant and Lata in Shabab
Teri chamakti aankhon ke aage … Talat and Lata in Chhote Babu
Thanks, and keep up the good work!

Hey
the other day i was watching late night movies and heard this absolutely fantastic Madhuri-Govinda song. its goes like this, “Ek rasgulla kahin phat gaya re.. re baba re.. phat ke jilebi se lipat gaya re” Its from inaamdar or izzatdar or something like that
It reminded me of other wacky madhuri songs like, “Mujhe achi lagti hai” and the parody from Jamai Raja, “yoodli doo” from khel, etc. She and probably Sridevi were the only ones who could get away with such utter nonsense. This was proven to me from the another song I hear last week from the mithun starrer Guru with Sridevi going, “I’m a bad girl”.
It would be a pleasure to see these songs here, as especially the first one as I couldn’t hear it fully the other night.
thanks

Thanks. Again, excellent effort. Two more comments. Lots of people are working hard to get the movie, extract the video, post in youtube and elsewhere. I think you should acknowledge their efforts, if not individually, at least as a general comment somewhere on your blog. Of course, if you are using Geet Kosh or another source to get song info that should be acknowledged too.

Lalitha ji,
Just browsing thru old posts :-).
You are not very much off the mark to think about Rajendra Kumar and the words “kamsin” and “nadaan”.
Rajendra Kumar has sung a similar sounding song in “Aayee Milan Ki Bela”, a 1964 film starring Rajendra, Dharamendra, and Saira Banu. The first lines are
“tum kamsin ho, nadaan ho
naazuk ho, bholi ho
sochta hoon mein
ke tumhen pyaar na karun
ke tumhen pyaar na karun”
Lyrics by Hasrat and music by SJ.

Hello Atul,
A farmaish after a long time. I suddenly remembered this popular comic song from my childhood (the 70s I should think),
“Aamdani athani kharcha rupaiya, bhaiya, na puchho na puchho haal, natija than than gopal”.
Don’t know singer or song but I would guess Kishore Kumar.
When I tried searching for it, it comes with a film of this name from 2001, of whose existence I did not have a clue.
Thanks in advance.

I came across your blog recently, and I must admire your hard work and dedication. I can see it becoming a comprehensive site of the best songs from the Golden (1950s and 60s) and the Vintage Era (1931-49). If I may give a suggestion to enrich your blog – now that it has reached a fairly large size, rather than adding songs randomly, it is best to proceed systematically either year-wise or music director-wise and fill up obvious omissions of the best or the most representative/defining songs that are left out. For example, in Purnima (Kalyanji Anandji) Mukesh’s Tumhein zindagi ke ujale mubarak; in Bazaar (1949, Shaym Sundar) Lata Mangeshkar’s Saajan ki galiyan chhod chale and Rafi-Lata duet Ae mohabbat unse milne ka bahana ban gaya; in Patang (Chitragupta) Lata’s Rang dil ki dhadkan laati to hogi are missing. These are the defining songs of these movies, there are several other such instances. I am sure they would be there on your radar screen also and would come in the due course. But I just thought proceeding systematically would achieve the objective more efficiently. At least you make sure you don’t spend your effort and energy on uploading mediocre songs at the cost of real gems.
I invite you to also browse my blog http://www.songsofyore.com. I do not intend it to be a survey blog like yours, but I off and on post more analytical articles on some features or patterns which strke my fancy. In the vast ocean of our music you never cease to be surprised and come across something new.
May I again compliment you on the wonderful service you are doing for millions of music lovers.

Wonderful site, Atul. A very useful & handy reference tool, too. I browse it regularly for my dose of golden oldies, rare gems, lyrics, song info or just to surprise myself. The days of yore studded with glittering jewels such as Radio Ceylon/SLBC & Vividh are sorely missed.
One thing that I notice & love about your blog is the painstaking indexing & categorisation of the content & the accuracy of material, esp. lyrics. Generally, the lyrics are free from errors, authentic and spelled brilliantly. Only a person of language can do such justice to transliterating hindi into english with admirable precision & exactness.
I’m sure you devote a considerable amount of time to build up and maintain this blog. As I do consult this blog from time to time, to repay the favour and as a token of my gratitude, I would like to offer my assistance in keeping this blog ticking over. What I can do for this blog is to submit a song’s lyrics & youtube link directly to you. After your approval & review, you may post it on to the blog alongwith your usual valuable & insightful comments.
Thank you indeed.

Hi Atul: Madan Mohan’s film Dil Ki Rahen (1973) has one of the most beautiful ghazals featuring Lata Mangeshkar’s enchanting voice and very captivating sitar passages. Hi
Nice blog. I wonder if you can present something on the line of version songs. These are the songs which were recorded in the voice of different singers but only one was used in the film. e.g. “Chal Ud Ja Re Panchhi” from “Bhabhi” that we have been listening to is the Rafi version, but the song was also recorded in Talat’s voice. There are many such songs. If someone can come up with these it would be very interesting and different.
While reading R D Burman’s biography I came to learn that there were quite a few songs he recorded that were not used in the film for which the recording was done. Does anyone have these songs? I would definitely like to hear these.

Atul ji,
The film Amaanat is shown in your blog’s movie listings as being released in the year 1977 whereas in the write up for the individual songs its 1965. I think there is some confusion here since even in the IMDb site, its listed as 1977. However without knowing all this, from the feel of the songs I had imagined that these did sound like the 60’s kind of songs. Hence I was surprised when the 1977 figure came up. Does anybody know more and would like to share it ?
