‘Main Meri Patni Aur Woh’ (2005) was produced under the banner of UTV Motion Pictures and was directed by Chandan Arora. The main cast consisted of Rajpal Yadav and Rituparna Sengupta in the lead roles with the supporting cast of Kay Kay Menon, Vinod Nagpal, Veena Mehta, Varun Bandola, Abdul Basir, Anil Rastogi etc. Nasiruddin Shah was a voice-over actor giving narrations. The film can be categorised as family drama comedy. From the film’s title, ‘Main’ is Rajpal Yadav, ‘Meri Patni’ is Rituparna Sengupta and ‘Who’ does not represent the third person but multiple persons. The film has been majorly shot in Lucknow. The film is available for watching on one of the video sharing platforms.

In this film, Rajpal Yadav in the role of Mithilesh from a middle-class family has already crossed his prime age for marriage. He does not want to get married now. On the insistence from his uncle, he goes to see a prospective bride, Veena (Rituparna Sengupta) and is hooked to get married to her who is much taller and savvier than him. After marriage, he develops inferiority complex and becomes paranoid to believe that any man who come across his wife is infatuated by her beauty. But he does not let his wife know about his insecurities until the end. The film presents Rajpal Yadav’s serious obsession in a humourous way.

The gist of the story of the film is as under:

Mithilesh Shukla (Rajpal Yadav) belongs to a middle-class family based in Lucknow. He works as a Librarian in the university of Lucknow. His short height and not so attractive looks makes him uncomfortable. He is past 30 and had decided to remain unmarried. But his widowed mother is pressurising him to get married. His maternal uncle, Mama ji (Vinod Nagpal) has brought a proposal to see a prospective bride for which he has to travel to Bareilly. He reluctantly agrees to accompany his uncle thinking that the prospective bride would eventually reject him for his short height and the looks.

On reaching there, he is introduced to a beautiful Veena who is much taller than him. They both like each other as they have common interest in literature. Both decide to get married. After marriage, Veena comes to stay with Mithilesh. Whenever they are seen in the public, he finds people staring at Veena as she looks savvy with her good height. He feels that people are infatuated with his wife. He avoids having been seen with his wife in public. He even discontinues the milkman and vegetable vendors coming of home delivery. He suggests his best friend and a sport coach, Salim (Varun Bundela) who often comes to his house and chats with his wife, to become a Rakhi brother to his wife and to Veena to become Rakhi sister to Salim. They happily accept the suggestion as Veena and Salim do not have a brother and sister, respectively.

When Mithilesh has minimised his insecurity level and things are working fine with him, Aakash (Kay Kay Menon), Veena’s friend from her college days, arrives and stay in the opposite building to Mithilesh’s house. Veena and Aakash meets quite often and they are quite informal. Mithilesh is jealous of his tall stature, smart looks, and his multi-facet personality. Aakash has become the centre of attention wherever he goes. He starts suspecting his wife of having an affair with Aakash. He even fears that his wife would divorce him to marry Aakash. After much thought, Mithilesh concludes that Aakash is better suited to Veena than himself.

On the next day, Veena suggests Mithilesh to have a candlelight dinner in a hotel to give him good news. Mithilesh agrees for the dinner thinking that it is a good opportunity to break the news to her that he knows about her ‘affair’ with Aakash, and he has no objection if she marries him if she is happy with that. Veena gets shocked to hear what Mithilesh had said on the dinner table. She is upset that he has suspected her of affair with Aakash whereas she wanted to give him the good news about her pregnancy during the dinner. She walks out of the dinner in a huff and goes back to Bareilly. It is Mama ji who gives Mithilesh a nice dressing down, asking him to apologise and bring Veena back from Bareilly. She forgives him knowing very well as to how simple and devoted husband he is.

In the recent period, I have watched many ‘off-beat’ films. Most of these films have simple stories. But it the screenplay which makes watching the films interesting. This film is not an exception. The screenplay of the film has created the light humourous situations on a serious issue of inferiority complex and the suspicion on the wife. The protagonist does not want his wife to know about his inferiority complex. There is no rift between husband and wife.

The film does not have the typical Bollywood star cast. Of course, Rituparna Sengupta has been one of the star actresses of Bangla films. The director has been able to extract from the main actors a feel of the real characters to the audience as if things are happening in one’s own neighbourhood. Both Rajpal Yadav and Rituparna Sengupta have given the intense performances during the last 15 minutes of the film, mainly through their expressions. Hence what I have written above about the film’s ending part appears too simplistic. But the way Rajpal Yadav breaks down in front of Rituparna Sengupta would melt down anyone and she forgives him without any hesitation.

The film has six songs written by Rocky Khanna (4), Zaheer Anwar (1) and, Vivek Kumar ‘Vinay’ (1). The songs have been set to music by Mohit Chauhan (2), Rajendra Shiv (3), and Nayab Raja (1). Except one, all the songs are played in the background.

I am presenting the first song from the film, a Ghazal, ‘guncha koi mere naam kar diya’ rendered and set to music by Mohit Chauhan. The song is written by Rocky Khanna. The situation in the song is that the Dean of Lucknow University has hosted a dinner for Aakash who has come to the university for computerisation of library. Dean’s wife during the dinner laments to Aakash that people from Delhi have forgotten how to recite even a couplet, forget about the entire ghazal. Aakash, being from Delhi, wants to prove that he can not only recite but can also sing full ghazal and he sings. Rajpal Yadav and Rituparna Ghosh are present during the dinner. Next day, Rajpal Yadav who is already jealous of Aakash for his closeness with his wife, watches her humming his ghazal which adds to his woes.

I have seen Rajpal Yadav in many films. But this is the first film in which I am seeing him in suit, and he looks great.
