Aage bhi jaane na tu

on:“Waqt” was the first multi starrer movie in Bollywood history, though some people call “Kismat” ( a movie of 1940s) as the first multi starrer.
“Waqt” was almost like a fore runner of Manmohan Desai blockbusters. It had family members getting separated, being raised by different parents, and getting united with each other towards the end of the movie.
In addition, the movie had some superb music as well. Sahir Ludhianvi was the lyricist and Ravi was the music director. They created some wonderful songs sung by Asha Bhonsle, Mahendra Kapoor, Manna Dey etc.
Here is one of the most popular songs from “Waqt”, viz “aage bhi jaane na tu”, sung by Asha Bhonsle. This was a party song in the movie, and was picturised in a typical 1960 way, which by the way, did not change much from the way such songs continue to be picturised in subsequent decades. In fact, this song may have serves as a template for future party songs in Bollywood.
This song is picturised on a lady called Erica Lal, who was an American lady who married an Indian.
Song-Aage bhi jaane na tu (Waqt) (1965) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Sahir Ludhianvi, MD-Ravi
Lyrics
aage bhi
jaane na tu
peechhe bhi
jaane na tu
jo bhi hai
bas yahi ek pal hai
aage bhi
jaane na tu
peechhe bhi
jaane na tu
jo bhi hai
bas yahi ek pal hai
aage bhi jaane na tu
anjaane saayon kaa
raahon mein deraa hai
andekhi baahon ne
ham sabko gheraa hai
ye pal ujaalaa hai
baaqi andheraa hai
ye pal ganvaanaa na
ye pal hi teraa hai
jeenewaale
soch le
yahi waqt hai
kar le poori aarzoo
aage bhi
jaane na tu
peechhe bhi
jaane na tu
jo bhi hai
bas yahi ek pal hai
is pal ke jalwon ne
mehfil sanwaari hai
is pal ki garmi ne
dhadkan ubhaari hai
is pal ke hone se
duniyaa hamaari hai
ye pal jo dekho to
sadiyon pe bhaari hai
jeenewaale soch le
yahi waqt hai
kar le poori aarzoo
aage bhi jaane na tu
peechhe bhi jaane na tu
jo bhi hai
bas yahi ek pal hai
aage bhi jaane na tu
la lalala
lalalala
la
lala
lalalal
lalala
lalala
lalalalala
is pal ke saaye mein
apnaa thikaanaa hai
is pal ke aage ki
har shay fasaanaa hai
kal kisne dekhaa hai
kal kisne jaanaa hai
is pal se paayegaa
jo tujhko paanaa hai
jeenewaale
soch le
yahi waqt hai
kar le poori aarzoo
aage bhi jaane na tu
peechhe bhi jaane na tu
jo bhi hai
bas yahi ek pal hai
aage bhi jaane na tu

Was the song Aage Bhi Jaane Na Tu, lip sync in the movie Waqt by Jeniffer Kendall (then Shashi Kapoor’s wife) or as we are being told by an unknown Erika Lall?

The tune of this song had been played in the background in the film Aayee Milan ki Bela which was made a year before (1964) Waqt (1965). Don’t know whether it’s an original tune by Ravi or SJ.

Jennifer Kendall (Kapoor) is a well-known name & face; Don’t give wrong information. The evergreen party song of “Waqt” was picturized on Mrs Erika Lal who was an American married to an Indian.
