Meow meow meri sakhi achchi achchi meri sakhi

Posted on: December 14, 2010

I have noticed that Hindi movies rarely show actors keeping pets like say cats and dogs. When I was growing up in 1960s and 1970s, most Indian families regarded keeping pets a luxury that average families could ill afford. Then there were people who were superstitious and they thought that a cat especially black one crossing their path was inauspicious. Only villains would keep pets in Hindi movies.

Since Hindi movie actors did not normally keep pets, so naturally there were hardly any songs picturised on them. To the best of my knowledge, there has been only one song picturised on a cat.

This song is from “Pooja Ke Phool” (1964). In this movie, Nimmi, playing a blind woman sings a song to a neighbourhood cat.

This cat too is not exactly a pet, rather she appears to stay somewhere in the neighbourhood and survive on the left overs provided by the householders.

Keeping a pet cat is a highly pleasaurable activity and the experience is priceless if one has a dog too. In the past, I (rather my wife and daughter) had a kitten and two pups. Unlike what they say about cats and dogs, these two pups and the kitten were very thick friends and would play together all over the places. The kitten, which was averse to drinking milk, began drinking it when she found the pups drinking it. She would take the pups around and show them various landmarks like banana tree, mango tree, garage, lamp post etc.

These days the abovementioned two ladies in my life have a kitten and a pup. The two are again very close to each other and their antics are great fun to watch. In fact, writing about them will take a full post and that will need to be posted in some other blog/forum.

It is unfortunate that Hindi movie makers never explored the possibilities of using pets in Hindi movies. The cat in this song is nowhere as cute as the cats I had/still have, but nevertheless this cat is a filmstar and my cats are not.

Here is this song, sung by Lata and picturised on Nimmi and the cat, with Dharmendra and Mala Sinha also figuring in the picturisation.

Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist and music is composed by Madana Mohan.

Lyrics

meow meow
meow meow meri sakhi
achchi achchi meri sakhi
meow meow meri sakhi
achchi achchi meri sakhi
bol mere balmaa ki soorat hai kaisi
bol mere balmaa ki soorat hai kaisi
meow meow meri sakhi
achchi achchi meri sakhi

dil to pehchaan liyaa
hai badaa pyaar bharaa
aankh jisase na hate
aankh bhi aisi hai kyaa
dil to pehchaan liyaa
hai badaa pyaar bharaa
aankh jisase na hate
aankh bhi aisi hai kyaa
chaal kaisi hai bataa
hogi dariya ki tarah
chaal kaisi hai bataa
hogi dariya ki tarah
honth honge aise
jaise pankhudi gulaab ki
meow meow
meow meow meri sakhi
achchi achchi meri sakhi
bol mere balmaa ki soorat hai kaisi
bol mere balmaa ki soorat hai kaisi
meow meow meri sakhi
achchi achchi meri sakhi

dekhkar unko kahin
chaand jaltaa to nahin
unke aangan mein khadaa
haath maltaa to nahin
dekhkar unko kahin
chaand jaltaa to nahin
unke aangan mein khadaa
haath maltaa to nahin
unke baalon se hawaa
roz chhoo jaati hai kyaa
unke baalon se hawaa
roz chhoo jaati hai kyaa
jaan gayi main wo kyun
khushbuon se hai bhari
meow meow
meow meow meri sakhi
achchi achchi meri sakhi
bol mere balmaa ki soorat hai kaisi
bol mere balmaa ki soorat hai kaisi
meow meow meri sakhi
achchi achchi meri sakhi
meow meow meri sakhi
achchi achchi meri sakhi

AVM productions produced two versions of this movie simulteneously,Tamil and Telugu in 1962.The Telugu version was ‘Manchi Manasulu'(Good People). This song alone was having common tune.In Telugu S.Janaki sang’Oho oho Paurama’.
When AVM made the Hindi movie”Pooja ke Phool”,the music director Madan Mohan was specifically asked by Mr.A.V.Maiyappan,to use the same tune in Hindi too,to ensure that it became a hit, just like Tamil and Telugu.
That is how, this song has the same tune and it is not a ‘Lift’,by Madan Mohan.
