Dekhiye saahibon wo koyi aur thi

Posted on: January 18, 2009

Here is yet another popular song from “Teesri Manzil”. In this song, Shammi Kapoor teases a girl, mistaking her for Asha Parekh and lands in trouble.

In real life India, such teasing would find a man doing this explaining in verse, but this being a Bollywood movie, our hero explains it in the form of this song. Emulating it in real life is not recommended. I am talking about teasing ( called eve teasing in India) not singing.

Our hero gets to do his explaining for four paragraphs, and in each case Asha Parekh counters his explanation as unacceptable. This could well have been a court scene, minus the customary long lost witness who would appear out of nowhere shouting- “Wait Judge Sahib, the hero is innocent, the teasing was done by the villain.” And the hero would be acquited honourably. 😉

No movie has had such a song so far,but it is never too late.I hope my suggestion would be taken seriously at least by some modern day film maker.

Song-Dekhiye saahibon wo koyi aur thi (Teesri Manzil) (1966) Singers-Shammi Kapoor, Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-R D Burman

Lyrics
———————————

dekhiye saahibon wo koyi aur thi
aur ye naazneen hai meri
main inpe martaa hoon
dekhiye saahibon wo koyi aur thi
aur ye naazneen hai meri
samjhaa thaa main ye hain khadi
lekin wahaan koyi aur thi
inke liye ai mohtaram
chhedaa kisi aur ko thaa Khudaa ki qasam
dekhiye saahibon wo koyi aur thi
aur ye naazneen hai meri
main inpe martaa hoon

logon kahne do isko
ye hai koyi deewaanaa
main na jaanoon kisi ko
itnaa meraa fasaanaa
o ho
ek dam galat fasaanaa hai
ek dam galat fasaanaa hai
inse to puraanaa hai
apnaa silsilaa
dekho to pyaar inko bhi hai
meraa khumaar inko bhi hai
inke liye ai mohtaram
chhedaa kisi aur ko thaa Khudaa ki qasam
dekhiye saahibon wo koyi aur thi
aur ye naazneen hai meri
main inpe martaa hoon

main ne kab isko chaahaa
kah do itnaa na phenke
aashiq banane se pahle
apni soorat to dekhe
o ho
soorat bhali buri kyaa hai
soorat bhali buri kyaa hai
saudaa to nazar kaa hai
saudaa pyaar kaa
inko kahaan gham doston
ruswaa huye ham doston
inke liye ai mohtaram
chhedaa kisi aur ko thaa Khudaa ki qasam
dekhiye saahibon wo koyi aur thi
aur ye naazneen hai meri
main inpe martaa hoon

haay haay dekho to isko
bole hi jaa rahaa hai
uljhi baaton mein zaalim
sabko uljhaa rahaa hai
o ho
sach ban gayaa agar uljhan
sach ban gayaa agar uljhan
phir kahiye janaab-e-man
meri kyaa khataa
mujh par yakeen ab kam sahi
main saadaa dil mujrim sahi
inke liye ai mohtaram chhedaa
kisi aur ko thaa Khudaa ki kasam
dekhiye saahibon wo koyi aur thi
aur ye naazneen hai meri
main inpe martaa hoon
dekhiye saahibon wo koyi aur thi
aur ye naazneen hai meri
main inpe martaa hoon

Look here, gentlemen, that was somebody else
And this beautiful lady is my own
I am crazy about her
Look here, gentlemen, that was somebody else
And this beautiful lady is my own
I thought she was standing here
But it turned out to be somebody else
Gentlemen, instead of her
I ended up teasing somebody else, I swear by God
Look here, gentlemen, that was somebody else
And this beautiful lady is my own
I am crazy about her

People, let him say whatever he likes
He is just a crazy guy
I don’t even know who he is
That’s all my story is
O ho
This is a totally false story
This is a totally false story
She and I go back a long way
Just see, even she loves me
Even she yearns for me
Gentlemen, instead of her
I ended up teasing somebody else, I swear by God
Look here, gentlemen, that was somebody else
And this beautiful lady is my own
I am crazy about her

When did I ever love him?
Tell him not to brag like this
Before he thinks of himself as a lover
Let him look at his face in a mirror
O ho
What’s so good or bad about one’s looks?
What’s so good or bad about one’s looks?
It’s about our views about each other
Our love for each other
Where’s she the affected party?
I’m the one who’s been humiliated
Gentlemen, instead of her
I ended up teasing somebody else, I swear by God
Look here, gentlemen, that was somebody else
And this beautiful lady is my own
I am crazy about her

Oh oh, just look at him
He’s going on and on
With his convoluted logic
He’s trying to confuse everybody
O ho
If the truth has become a problem
If the truth has become a problem
Then tell me, guys
How am I to blame?
Maybe the trust in me is low right now
Maybe I’m seen as the one to blame
Gentlemen, instead of her
I ended up teasing somebody else, I swear by God
Look here, gentlemen, that was somebody else
And this beautiful lady is my own
I am crazy about her
Look here, gentlemen, that was somebody else
And this beautiful lady is my own
I am crazy about her

Finally this farmaish has also made it.
The fun component of this song is huge – and Majrooh’s lyrics are very much a part of it.
Shammi and Asha Parekh in Teesri Manzil (with Rafi and Asha Bhonsle as playback) – just fantastic.
This is one of the least-known songs of the movie. But that is another reason I like it so much. I have always favoured the “underdog” and 99 out 100 persons who talk about Teesri Manzil will not mention this as one of their top 3 songs of the movie. I would.

I just loved this song the first time I saw this film, on TV!

Shammi was just brilliant and the way the lyrics carry on with the explanations, and then cut off abruptly to “main unpe marta hoon!”

Correct this is a mesmerizing song and to think of it Shammi ji did not want to put a ‘new’ composer in his film [R D Burman] and he asked ‘who is Pancham?’

Only Majrooh had written a host of such fun songs : Shagird- bade miyan deewaane; Munimji- maana janaab ne pukaara nahin etc., . Lyrical dialogue in naughty diction.
