Tum bhulaaye na gaye

Posted on: May 31, 2012

This article is written by Shekhar Gupta, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a contributor to this blog.

Feroza Begum was the better-half of the famed music director Kamal Dasgupta who composed many Bangla movie and private songs and some unforgettable Hindi ones too – in particular for Jawab (1942) and Hospital (1943) which numbers are very much availableon this blog.

Following details on Feroza Begum is excepted from Star (Vol 7 Issue 48 dated 05 Dec 2008):

Born in an aristocratic family in Faridpur district in the 1930s, Feroza Begum became drawn to music in her childhood. She had no formal education in music, but she used to render songs listening to contemporary music on records of the then popular singers such as Aashchorjomoyee Devi, Sati Devi, Angur Bala, Indu Bala and Swarnokumari Devi in the pantry of her home. She became so devoted to music that it was an all-encompassing preoccupation. At this stage of her life she got enormous support from her family and took part in school music competitions.

In 1955, Feroza Begum made the biggest decision of her life when she migrated from Dhaka to Kolkata to an uncertain future with only her optimism to bank on. Subsequently she married Kamal Dasgupta. As a singer in Kolkata, Feroza Begum has had some spectacular achievements. An enlisted artist of Akashvani Kolkata, Feroza Begum used to sing Nazrul Sangeet, Rabindra Sangeet, thumri, dadra, ghazals, bhajan, geet and folk songs with Nazrul Sangeet.

Tum bhulaaye na gaye is one of the loveliest songs Feroza Begum sang. There is something special about it; one simply doesn’t get tired of listening to. Firoza Begum in her unique and beautifully sweet vocals has infused agony and angst into this engrossing composition of Kamal Dasgupta. In particular, what takes my breath away is the way she has enunciated “chaand nikla … nikla” which brings out the wistfulness for the lover whose visage she sees in the moon: “chaand nikla teri surat ley kar”. This expression would do credit to a Lata or Noor Jahan in full flow.

There is a reference on the Internet of this number being later used in a movie called Asif-ud-daula (1957) but I have not been able to locate it.

Song-Tum bhulaaye na gaye (Feroza Begam NFS) (1950) Singer-Feroza Begam, MD-Kamal Dasgupta

Lyrics

Tum bhulaaye na gaye
tum bhulaaye na gaye,
haaye
bhulaaye na gaye
saath aankhon ne humaara to diya
aansuon ne bhi sahaara to diya
daag-e-dil phir bhi mitaaye na gaye
daag-e-dil phir bhi mitaaye na gaye
tum bhulaaye na gaye

chaand nikla nikla
chaand nikla teri soorat ley kar
raat aayi to museebat le kar
chaand nikla teri soorat ley kar
raat aayi to museebat ley kar
gham ke badaal to hataaye na gaye
gham ke badaal to hataaye na gaye!
tum bhulaaye na gaye

aag aahon ne laga kar chhoda
aarzuon ko jala kar chhoda
aag aahon ne laga kar chhoda
aarzuon ko jala kar chhoda
hum se yeh deep bujhaaye na gaye
hum se yeh deep bujhaaye na gaye
tum bhulaaye na gaye,
haaye bhulaaye na gaye

I love this song and wonder why it is not better known and more popular. Possibly, it is not so easy to sing for ordinary singers whereas more catchy tunes are easier. Whatever the reasons, I am pleased to see this song here. There is a YouTube version with Nargis (made up background) which also gives a translation of the lyrics.

YouTube shows Nargis singing. Lip-syncing is there, so how does it become made up background? Looks like a song in a movie. any ideas?
