Jhoom jhoom jhoom jhoom rahi pyaar ki duniya

This article is written by Arunkumar Deshmukh, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Recently I had mentioned the name of Shirish Kanekar, a writer on HFM of yore. He writes in Marathi. He has a photographic memory and hundreds of anecdotes about songs, singers, composers, directors and everybody in films. He has written about 30 odd books, most of which are highly readable.

Recently I was reading his book “Cinema dot com”, in which he has brought the focus on a strange but interesting matter about Lata.

He says,” if you take the multiple version songs of Lata i.e. same song by Lata and other by a male singer, it is the male singer who beats Lata.

he gives some examples.” Take the songs of Talat Mehmood for example. His velvet like sweet shaky voice has certainly overshadowed Lata’s version. In fact in most songs you may even not know that there is also a Lata version.

1. Aye mere dil kahin aur chal-daag

2. Surmayee raat hai-Joru ka Bhai

3. Jaayen to jaayen kahan-Taxi Driver

4. Mera karaar le jaa-Aashiyana

5. Sab kuch luta ke hosh mein aaye to kya hua-Ek saal

6. Aye meri zindagi tujhe dhundhoo kahan-Adil E Jahangir

and

7. Tum to dil ke taar chhed kar- Roop ki Rani Choron ka Raja

Truely, some of these songs are so famous that people even forget that these songs are also sung by Lata. In all these songs, only Talat is remembered.

There are some other songs also, like

1. ye raat ye chandani phir kahan-hemant kr.-Jaal

2. Aa laut ke aajaa mere meet-Mukesh-Rani Roopmati

3. Ehasaan tera hoga-Rafi-Junglee and

4. Khilte hai gul yahan-Kishore Kr-Sharmilee.

when you hear both versions, you get convinced that the male version is better and therefore more popular.

One more about Lata…

Lata-Asha’s first duet was “Ye rukhi rukhi hawa”-Daman-51,MD K.Datta.

But in 1948 itself, Anil Biswas had planned their duet in Anokha Pyar-1948. Lata was to sing for Nalini Jaywant and Asha for Nargis. On the day of recording, Asha did not turn up due to ill health and Ira Nagrath-Roshan sang with Lata.

Anil Biswas never liked Rafi and had hardly used him. On the insistance of Lata Anilda recorded 2 songs by Rafi for Do Raha-48. After rafi left, Anilda was not satisfied. He called for Talat and then Talat sang those songs again. The songs were- tera khayaal dil se and muhabbat tark ki.

As far as C Ramchandra is concerned he never made any version songs of Lata either with him or other singers.

In Albela also, the famous Lori is sung once by Lata solo, but in the other version, Chitalkar is with Lata in the song.

C Ramchandra’s Life story….

C Ramchandra and his mother had very strained relations. She stayed with his elder brother in Poona. Once Lata and C Ramchandra had been to Poona for some work. Lata asked him,” Your mother stays here, isnt it ?”

” May be”

” What do you mean may be. Afterall she is your mother. You ought to know.”

” but we do not see eye to eye”

” Nothing doing. We will meet her”

C Ramchandra says” we found out their house and met them. I had become emotional. We embraced each others. After that I started sending money to her every month.

It was only because of Lata that this had happened.

One day a guest of one of our tenents met me. He had travelled round the world. While chatting he asked me which are the countries I had seen. On my negative answer he seemed shocked that I have never been abroad. He insisted that a rich man like me must see foreign lands. I felt really ashamed.

Next day I met Bhagwan and told him,” we are going abroad”

He asked,”why”

I said,”just like that”

He said, Ok.

Bhagwan was my best friend , always with me in anything. We decided to go to Japan and started doing all arrangements.

On 2-10-1952, we left Bombay for Singapore on our way to Tokyo. We had to take the connecting flight at Singapore. Somehow we could not get a flight and spent 4 days at Calcutta.

Finally we got the flight. In the flight Bhagwan used to eat and immediately go to sleep. He snored so loudly that the passengers from the last seats also came there to see the source of the sound. When he woke up, people used to smile at him and Bhagwan also smiled, without knowing why they were laughing. He did not know English very well at all and all the talking was done by me.

WE spent about 2 months in Japan . On our return trip, we stopped at Manila for few hours. I took Bhagwan with me and went into Manila town. After having lot of enjoyment we returned to the airport.

I was walking ahead and talking to Bhagwan who was behind me. Suddenly I realised there is no reply from him. I stopped, turned around and was shocked to find Bhagwan missing.

I was panicky. He did not know English also. I started searching for him. From one of the rooms I heard his voice,”No No NO Sir NO No”.

I went inside. Bhagwan was standing there with both hands up and a Policeman with a gun aimed at him was in his front.

I asked the Police”,Officer, what is the problem. We are India bound passengers”

He lowered his gun and said,”I asked this gentleman whether you are a direct passenger and he kept on saying only NO NO.”

Bhagwan was wet with perspiration and fear. I explained everything and we came to our aircraft.

We finally landed in Bombay as “Foreign returned “………

The next episode will be on Lata- C Ramchandra relationship and the subsequent final episode will be on the song ” Aye mere watan ke logon”.

Meanwhile let us enjoy this sweet song, one of my favourites of Lata and C Ramchandra…….

beet gaye naadaan zamaane
preet ne likhe naye fasaane

laut gayi wo bairan ghadiyaan

lekar apne dard puraane

jhoom rahi pyar ki duniya

aa aa

Arunji,
Very interesting another episode of CR and Lata. CR, Bhagwan’s Japan tour was hilarious. I wonder if CR ever traveled with his buddy to another foreign country after that experience. Yes, No and Thank You are very dangerous for someone who doesn’t know English. Ab aapke agle post ka intezaar rahega aur iske baad final 😦 episode about Aye mere watan ke logo……
