“Woh kaun thi” (1964) must rank as one of the best suspense movies made in Bollywood, and this song is arguably one of the best suspense songs in this movie as well as in the history of Bollywood movie music.
Here is one Lata song where she for a change does not sound high pitched or shrill ( as has been the case in a few of her songs). Raja Mehdi Ali Khan has written this song that captures the atmosphere so admirably well. Madan Mohan has created a masterpiece that was appreciated by masses and classes alike. This song was 9th in Binaca geetmala final of 1964.
44 years later, this song has not aged one bit. If anything, it has become more popular with discerning music lovers. This is timeless music at its best.
Note- This song was also sung by Madan Mohan, but that song was never released nor was it part of the movie. Madan Mohan version of song is available on internet if one searches hard enough for it.;)
My lyrics below gives the lyrics for Madan Mohan version of the song too. The video above is ofcourse for the Lata Mangeshkar version of the song.

Madan Mohan Version (Not In Film)
Song- Naina Barse rimjhim rimjhim (Wo kaun thi ) (1964) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, MD-Madan Mohan
Lyrics
Lata version
aaa aaa aaa
aaa aaa
nainaa barsen,
rimjhim rimjhim
nainaa barsen,
rimjhim rimjhim
piyaa tore aawan ki aas
nainaa barsen,
rimjhim rimjhim
nainaa barsen,
barsen,
barsen
wo din meri nigaahon mein
wo yaadein meri aahon mein
o o o o o
wo din meri nigaahon mein
wo yaaden meri aahon mein
ye dil ab tak bhataktaa hai
teri ulfat ki raahon mein
sooni-sooni raahein,
sahmi-sahmi baahein
aankhon mein hai barson ki pyaas
nainaa barsen,
rimjhim rimjhim
nainaa barsen,
barsen,
barsen
nazar tujh bin machalti hai
muhabbat haath malti hai
ho ho ho ho ho ho
nazar tujh bin machalti hai
muhabbat haath malti hai
chalaa aa mere parwaane
wafaa ki shamaa jalti hai
o mere hamraahi,
phirti hoon ghabraayi
jahaan bhi hai,
aa jaa mere paas
nainaa barsen,
rimjhim rimjhim
nainaa barsen,
barsen,
barsen
adhooraa hoon main afsaanaa
jo yaad aaun chale aanaa
mera jo haal hai tujh bin
wo aakar dekhte jaanaa
bheegi bheegi palkein
chamcham aansoo chaalkein
khoyi khoyi ankhen hain udaas
naina barsen
rimjhim rimjhim
nainaa barsen,
barsen,
barsen
ye laakhon gham ye tanhaayi
muhabbat ki ye ruswaayi
ye laakhon gham ye tanhaayi
muhabbat ki ye ruswaayi
kati aisi kayi raaten
na tum aaye na maut aayi
ye bindiya ka taara
jaise ho angaara
mehandi mere haathon ki udaas
naina barsen
rimjhim rimjhim
piyaa tore aawan ki aas
naina barsen
rimjhim rimjhim
naina barsen
barsen
barsen
Madan Mohan version
adhooraa hoon main afsaanaa
jo yaad aauun chale aanaa
adhooraa hoon main afsaanaa
jo yaad aauun chale aanaa
meraa jo haal hai tujh bin
wo aakar dekhte jaanaa
bheegi-bheegi palken, chham-chham aansoo chhalken
khoi-khoi aankhen hain udaas
nainaa barasen, rimjhim rimjhim
piya tore aavan ki yaad
nainaa barsen, barsen, barsen

Version with Madan Modan is also very good.Obviously Lataji’s voice suits the song better….or may be we are just used to hers.

i just stumbled upon this version of Madan Mohan’s “Naina Barse Rim Jhim Rim Jhim”. (thanks to a friend of mine on FB who shared it with me)
i was sure it is there on our blog, but i find that it is only mentioned here.
this particular blog (i think) also gives the reason as to why it was not used in the movie or ever used

“Sound high-pitched”?? Women’s voices are naturally pitched higher than men’s,and I like the fact that in Indian music, women sing high notes instead of trying to sound like men (like in the west).I have never thought of Lata-ji’s voice as shrill, either, especially not in her early days. maybe it depends on what you’re accustomed to hearing.
