Waqt ne kiya kya haseen sitam

on:I, as well as my readers are not ashamed of being nostalgic. It is a natural outcome of enjoying songs that were created many decades ago. When we listen to these songs and watch their picturisation, the experience is very much like walking down the memory lane and reliving the past.
Among all such songs, songs talking about “waqt” or time are among the most poignant. Time has certain inherent properties ( viz. it does not come back, it waits for none, etc) and these properties lead to songs that are specially powerful and can move the listeners everytime they listen to them.
Take this song “waqt ne kiya kya haseen sitam” for example. True, waqt can torture you beautifully (by making you nostalgic of course). The beautiful lyrics are written by Kaifi Azmi, and have been set to tune by S D Burman just as beautifully. Geeta Dutt’s voice is just out of this word. And this movie “Kaagaz ke phool” was a memorable movie made by Guru Dutt.
This song is one of the immortal songs from this immortal movie. There are more such songs, and I will post them too.

Song-Waqt ne kiya kya haseen sitam (Kaaghaz ke phool) (1959) Singer-Geeta Dutt, Lyrics-Kaifi Azmi, MD-S D Burman
Lyrics
waqt ne kiyaa kyaa haseen sitam
tum rahe na tum ham rahe na ham
waqt ne kiyaa kyaa haseen sitam
tum rahe na tum ham rahe na ham
waqt ne kiyaa
beqaraar dil is tarah mile
jis tarah kabhi ham judaa na the
beqaraar dil is tarah mile
jis tarah kabhi ham judaa na the
tum bhi kho gaye, ham bhi kho gaye
ek raah par chalke do qadam
waqt ne kiyaa kyaa haseen sitam
tum rahe na tum ham rahe na ham
waqt ne kiyaa…
jaayenge kahaan poochhtaa nahin
chal pade magar raastaa nahin
jaayenge kahaan poochhtaa nahin
chal pade magar raastaa nahin
kyaa talaash hai kuchh pataa nahin
bun rahe hain dil khwaab dam-ba-dam
waqt ne kiyaa kyaa haseen sitam
tum rahe na tum ham rahe na ham
waqt ne kiyaa kya haseen sitam
tum rahe na tum ham rahe na ham
waqt ne kiyaa

Superb singing of this moving song by the great Geeta Dutt !
Noteworthy of this video is the wonderful lyric and the splendid music by the legendary SD Burman, not to forget the innovative cinematography with the natural sunlight through the gap in the roof shot with great skill with Guru Dutt’s direction

Wow what a beautiful number. It is quite a team effort this and they have all come out with flying colors.
It almost seems like Geeta Dutt is singing through Waheeda about the love triangle :).
