Ek thi ladki

This is a song from “Gumrah”, a 1963 movie showing Mala Sinha at her sacrificing best. In this movie, the kids of her sister ask her to tell a story, and she sings this song “ek thi ladki” (happy version) which she claims to be the story of one of her friends, but as the audience guess correctly, is her own story.This serves as a lullaby and the kids go to sleep peacefully.
Then tragedy strikes, and her sister dies. She is made to marry her widower brother in law, though she was in love with Sunil Dutt. One can imagine the poignancy of the situation.
The kids of her sister, who now call her mother instead of auntie, thanks to her wedding with their father, ask her to tell the same story again. And this time, she sings the sad version of the song. The kids also sense the tension of the situation. They too get tense and silently go to sleep.
This song is not really a lullaby in the true sese of the song, though one may be led to think that way, considering that it is a song sung to kids. It is a serious song, really.

So I managed to describe the situation accurately without actually watching the movie. Phew ! I am becoming better in guessing the story by just watching the songs I guess. 😉

Gumrah was one of the old classics.Mala sinha and sunil Dutt looked good together.

HFGK Vol-IV (1961-1970) mentions the two parts (Part-I & Part-II) of this song as separate songs.

Story of the movie very well told, Atul.
It was a very good movie.
Lovely songs.
And Shashikala is just brilliant in the movie.
