Jaag dil-e-deewanaa
Posted on: December 21, 2008
This is a “new” song for me, though it is from a 1965 movie called “Oonche Log”. The lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri are heavy duty Urdu stuff, which are difficult to decipher. But knowing Majrooh Saab, it must surely mean something profound.
Or who knows, the song may just be saying “good morning, wake up, rise and shine”. Morning it may be, but the picturisation shows a murky foggy morning, the kind which greets India in winter mornings, especially on hills.
But as far as I am concerned, the song does appear like one belonging to “chaayageet” category. It has all the credentials to qualify as one- viz heavy duty lyrics, use of string instuments in the music, “bhoole bisre” nature of the movie, etc.
Though I discovered this song just recently, I must admit that I am warming up to this song, and the song is certainly growing up on me.

Lyrics
ho aa
jaag dil-e-deewaanaa rut jaagi vasl-e-yaar ki
jaag dil-e-deewaanaa rut jaagi vasl-e-yaar ki
basi huyi zulf mein aayi hai sabaa pyaar ki
jaag dil-e-deewaanaa rut jaagi vasl-e-yaar ki
jaag dil-e-deewaanaa
do dil ke kuchh leke payaam aayi hai
chaahat ke kuchh leke salaam aayi hai
do dil ke kuchh leke payaam aayi hai
chaahat ke kuchh leke salaam aayi hai
dar pe tere subah khadi huyi hai deedaar ki
jaag dil-e-deewaanaa rut jaagi vasl-e-yaar ki
jaag dil-e-deewaanaa
ek pari kuchh shaad si nashaad si
baithi huyi shabnam mein teri yaad ki
ek pari kuchh shaad si nashaad si
baithi huyi shabnam mein teri yaad ki
bheeg rahi hogi kahin kali si gulzaar ki
jaag dil-e-deewaanaa rut jaagi vasl-e-yaar ki
jaag dil-e-deewaanaa
o mere dil ab khwaabon se munh mod le
beeti huyin sab raaten yahin chhod de
o mere dil ab khwaabon se munh mod le
beeti huyin sab raaten yahin chhod de
tere to din raat hain ab aansoo me dildaar ki
jaag dila-e-deewaanaa rut jaagi vasl-e-yaar ki
basi huyi zulph mein aayi hai sabaa pyaar ki
jaag dil-e-deewaanaa

Am hearing this song after a long time.
This was a good movie – a different type. I think it was a remake of a South Indian movie (or was re-made).
It has another very good song “aaja re mere pyar ke raahi”. Could you post that too, Atul ? Thanks.

I am sure you will like it. This movie was a very different type of story. There is another very good song in the movie “haaye re tere chanchal”.

dear atul, thanks for posting this song. most of the lyric sites copy from one another, and they all have the 3rd stanza missing. i cd find it only here!
also, i think the last line of the last stanza “tere to din raat hain ab aansoo me dildaar ki” is actually “tere do din raat hain ab aankhon me dildaar ki”.
(‘do’ instead of ‘to’, and ‘aankhon’ instead of ‘aansoo’)
pls do check and rectify. thx once again

This song is in my favorite list of Rafi saab’s songs.
If the song featured a mainstream hero,it would have been more popular.
