This song is indeed the reason why we remember this movie called “Prem Nagar” to this date. The movie, which turned out to be a box office disaster despite boasting of the biggest names of the industry viz Rajesh Khanna and Hema Malini, had a story line that failed to appeal to the movie goers.
There was not such problem with the music of this movie. S D Burman came up with some memorable songs.
And this particular song was the most memorable song of them all. “Ye laal rang kab mujhe chhodega” sung by Kishore Kumar and picturised on Rajesh Khanna is song that is sung wonderfully well by Kishore Kumar. Indeed this is one of the many evergreen songs that Kishore Kumar sang for Rajesh Khanna.

Lyrics
Ye laal rang kab mujhe chhodegaa
Ye laal rang kab mujhe chhodegaa
mer gham kab talak mera dil todega
Ye laal rang kab mujhe chhodegaa
kisi ka bhi liya naam to aayi yaad tu hi tu
kisi ka bhi liya naam to aayi yaad tu hi tu
ye to pyaala sharaab ka ban gaya ye lahoo
ha Ye laal rang kab mujhe chhodegaa
peene ki qasam daal di piyunga kis tarah haan
peene ki qasam daal di piyunga kis tarah
ye na socha tune yaar main jiyunga kis tarah
ye laal rang kab mujhe chhodega
hmm chala jaaun kahin chhod ke main tera ye shahar haan
chala jaaun kahin chhod ke main tera ye shahar
na to yahan amrit mile peene ko na zahar haay
ye laal rang kab mujhe chhodega
mera gham kab talak o mera dil todega
ye laal rang kab mujhe

Yes on Chhaila Babu being a hit. See below (original source is linked at the end).
“….As a star he continued doling out the occasional hit (Chhaila Babu, Amar Deep, Thodi Si Bewafaii, Dhanwan, Avtaar, Souten, Maqsad, Amrit) all the way to the ‘80s, and as always never shirked from experiment. If his peak saw him take up Khamoshi, Anand, Amar Prem, Aap Ki Kasam and Aakraman in offbeat or gray roles, he daringly played a psychopath in Red Rose, a philanderer in Dhanwan and a politician in Aaj Ka MLA Ram Avtar even later. ”

Atul–Your information on filmi songs is impeccable but on filmi BO status perhaps less so ? 🙂 Prem Nagar was a silver jubilee hit of Kaka and Hema in 1974. In fact Kaka had a great 1974 with 3 silver jubilees with this, Aap ki kasam and Roti. Ajanabee didn’t do so badly either, not a jubilee though. Humshakal was the only flop that year but had a great soundtrack from RD. Prem Nagar’s BO performance is borne out by the following:
