Aaja meri barbaad muhabbat ke sahare

It is a legendary song sung by Noorjahan and it was picturised on Noorjahan herself. The movie is “Anmol Ghadi”(1946).
This song was created in pre partition days and the picturisation shows Noorjahan seated in an easy chair and singing this sad song. Watching this picturisation, we are magically transported back to 1940s when things were so different from what they are now.
None of the famous bollywood dynasties had even been formed those days. None of the by now famous music directors, moviemakers, movie dynasties etc had come up. Things were much more primitive and basic. And Noorjahan ruled the roost as a female plaback singer.
Then partition happened, and things went topsy turvy, and not just in movie world.
After the dust settled, things had changed beyond recognition.
In a way, this song was like the lull before the storm, in my opinion. This song was written by Tanveer Naqvi and the music director was Naushad.

I love Noor Jehan’s singing. If you listen to her pre-independence hits, it is amazing how many of them will ring a bell still!

What a beautiful song, and what an utter contrast to the songs these days!
The character remains seated throughout the song, with only small shifts in her position, as opposed to the songs these days, with all the brisk movements (which remind me of aerobics most of the time!).
There is only one character, and the background remains the same, instead of having 25 to 30 extras filling up the space behind her, engaging in calisthenics, and moving from Switzerland to Italy to London in the blink of an eye.
Finally, I had the time to really absorb Noor Jehan’s beauty and her voice and enjoy the song, something I so rarely do these days, because I usually push the Fast Forward button when a song starts these days.

Here are some farmaishes, Atul, all sung by Noor Jehan and all from this same movie – “jawan hai mohabbat …” , ” aawaaz de kahan hai …”, and “Kya mil gaya bhagwan …”. I had no idea all these songs were from the same movie, it must have been a major hit in those days. She has such a wonderful voice, Pakistan surely gained a gem in her.

Anmol Ghadi had such evergreen songs that tey can still be recognised today and Naushad showed all the genius of his later compositions right from this film.
Another film full of hit songs was Jugnu, esp. Yahan Badla Wafa ka Bewafai Ke Siva Kya (please post Atul), whcih my parents used to sing as a duet!
Yes it was a pity we lost her; the quality of the songs she got to sing later left much to be desired. I think her best in Pakistan was this nazm by Faiz

Although set as a romantic heroine song in the film, the poet had just come from a long imprisonment accused of high treason in the notorious Rawalpindi Conspiracy case.
So if you look at the second meaning, with the poet referring to his country, this nazm gives you the shivers! In fact, Faiz himself gifted this poem to her, and never recited it himself as he said he could not better her.

Greetings
I like your site very much esp. regarding golden oldies of 40’s ,50’s and 60’s but would like a request. Not everyone is conversant with Hindi/Urdu and given the songs are poetry style and the words tend to be not in order as opposed to oral speech. So we would benefit a lot if translations of the songs were made available and we would enjoy the songs even better. Please try your best to oblige and would be much appreciated. Many thanks.
