O sanam

In olden days, love songs would often have words like “Chaand”, “raat” etc in their lyrics. Another interesting variation was where the hero would sing a sing in a moonlit night with tajmahal in the background.
Here is a “Tajmahal” song from a 1951 movie called “Sanam”. This is a duet sung by Rafi and Suraiyya and picturised on Dev Anand and Suraiyya. Both are dressed in Mughal dresses. I hope they do not play Salim and Anarkali in this song, because then the picturisation would lose its authenticity because there was no Tajmahal during the days of Salim and Anarkali.
The song itself is quite a superb “chayageet” song. Qamar Jalalabadi wrore it and Husnlal Bhagatram composed the music of this duet.
Song-O sanam (Sanam) (1951) Singers-Rafi, Suraiyya, Lyrics-Qamar Jalalabadi, MD-Husnlal Bhagatram
Lyrics
O sanam O sanam
O sanam
main tujhe pukaaroon
sanam sanam
sanam sanam
main tujhe pukaaroon
sanam sanam
sanam sanam
main tere liye hoon teri qasam
teri qasam
O sanam O sanam
O sanam O sanam
abhi abhi aankhon ne kya kiya re
abhi abhi aankhon ne kya kiya re
aankhon ne aankhon ko choom liya re
aankhon ne aankhon ko choom liya re
phir kyun na pukaaroon sanam sanam
sanam sanam
phir kyun na pukaaroon sanam sanam
sanam sanam
O sanam O sanam
O sanam O sanam
abhi abhi dil ne khabar sunaayi
abhi abhi dil ne khabar sunaayi
aankhon ne aankhon se kar li sagaayi
aankhon ne aankhon se kar li sagaayi
ab shauk se kah lo sanam sanam
sanam sanam
O sanam O sanam
O sanam O sanam
likhi thi qismat me judaayi
likhi thi qismat me judaayi
toot gayi aankhon ki sagaayi
toot gayi aankhon ki sagaayi
ab tum mujhko yaad na karna
meri qasam fariyaad na karna

I love this song, but Dev Anand looks funny in Mughal costumes! Lovely, melodious and haunting song! Thanks!
