Piya sang khelo holi phaagun aayo re
Posted on: March 11, 2009
I posted a few Holi songs yesterday which I thought were the best songs on this topic.
Now I have come to know about a few more songs on this topic.
One such song about which I was totally unaware is from the movie “Phagun”. Now, most people, including me, are only aware of one movie called “phagun”(1958) starring Madhubala and boasting of some superb O P Nayyar music.
But I never knew that there was another movie by this name that was released in 1973. Obviously this newer movie failed badly at the box office.
This newer “Phagun” had a wonderful Holi song, and I was made aware about this song by Bawa, one of the regular readers of this blog.
Here is this forgotten gem from “phagun” (1973). It is sung by Lata and picturised on Waheeda Rahman. S D Burman was the music director and the song was written by Majrooh Sultanpuri.

Lyrics
aaa aaa
aaa aaa
ruru ru hu
ta kin dhinak da
ta kin dhinak da
o
Piya sang khelo hori
Piya sang khelo
Piya sang khelo hori
phagun aayo re
ho phagun aayo re
chunariya bhigo le gori
phagun aayo re
ho phagun aayo re
dhin tinak dhin
dhi dhin tinak dhin
dhi dhin tinak dhin
dhi dhin tinak dhin
dhin tinak dhin
dhi dhin tinak dhin
dhi dhin tinak dhin
dekho jis ore mach raha shor
gali me abeer ude hawa me gulaal
kahin koyi haay tan ko churaaye
chali jaaye jaisi gaadi pooch jaaye haal
kare koyi joraa jori
kare koyi joraa jori
phagun aayo re
ho phagun aayo re
dhin tinak din
dhi dhi tinak dhin
dhi dhi tinak dhin
dhi dhi tinak dhin
ho ho ho
ho ho ho
koyi kahe sajni suno pukaar
baras baad aaye tohre duwaar
aaj to mori gende ki kali
holi ke bahaane milo ek baar
tan pe hai rang
man pe hai rang
kisi matwaare ne kyaa rang diyo daar
uyi
phulwa ke paar
gori tore gaar
naino me ghulaabi dore
mukh pe bahaar

This song is a tipping point in the movie. The real story begins from here. It is a lesson for all self respecting men not to become a ghar-jamai.

Thanks for posting this Atul 🙂 Now I had forgotten about the Madhubala one with the same name 😦 so it is a mutual reminder. I like the music of the Madhubala one very much, but the story is more conventional.
If you haven’t seen this movie, it is quite a good one to watch, with a storyline a bit different from the usual Hindi films. It is by Rajinder Singh Bedi, who is behind some good stuff in Hindi cinema and also is, of course the maker of Dastak.
The song breaks off at this point because otherwise it would be a major plot **spoiler**!!
