Ai mere dil kahin aur chal

on:In my younger days, “Daag” to me meant the Rajesh Khanna movie released in 1970s and the songs of this movie were big hits.
There was another “Daag”, which was released in 1952 and which starred Dilip Kumar. By my standards, it was an old movie with boring old songs.
Here is one song from this old “Daag” which I then regarded as boring and which I now consider a Talat Mahmood classic. you see, I can be as much of a turncoat as many opportunist politicians. 😉
PS-Now it has been pointed out by nahm that this song also has a female version sung by Lata, with identical lyrics. Now I have provided the link of that version too.
PS-Now I have come to know that this song has not two but three versions ! There are two versions sung by Talat Mehmood and one version sung by Lata. All three versions have identical lyrics.
Talat Mehmood (both versions)

Song-Ai mere dil kahin aur chal (Daag) (1952) Singer-Talat Mehmood/Lata, Lyrics-Shailendra, MD-Shankar Jaikishan
Lyrics
Ai mere dil kahin aur chal
gham ki duniya se dil bhar gaya
dhoondh le ab koi ghar nayaa
ai mere dil kahin aur chal
gham ki duniya se dil bhar gaya
dhoondh le ab koi ghar nayaa
ai mere dil kahin aur chal
chal jahaan gham ke maare na hon
jhoothi aashaa ke taare na hon
chal jahaan gham ke maare na hon
jhoothi aashaa ke taare na hon
jhoothi aashaa ke taare na hon
in bahaaron se kya faayda
jis mein dil ki kali jal gayi
zakhm phir se haraa ho gaya
ai mere dil kahin aur chal
chaar aaansoo koi ro diya
pher ke munh koi chal diya
chaar aaansoo koi ro diya
pher ke munh koi chal diya
pher ke munh koi chal diya
lut raha thha kisi ka jahaan
dekhti rah gayi ye zameen
chup raha beraham aasmaan
ai mere dil kahin aur chal
gham ki duniya se dil bhar gaya
dhoondh le ab koi ghar nayaa
ai mere dil kahin aur chal

Don’t ask me why, but I came to this song today. It was a superhit when I was in middle school.
I would appreciate if yo correct the line –
dhoondh le ab koi ghar gaya
to
dhoondh le ab koi ghar nayaa

This song was I guess later inspired to be made as a Tamil song sung by A M Raja. The Tamil song if I remember right was “Thulliye Odume” (not sure about the movie).

Love your style of writing, Atul. 🙂
I remember the first time I heard this song. In those days, I would try to figure out who the singer was. I heard this song – and struggled. It did not sound like Rafi but it did not sound like any other singer I was familiar with. Then the announcer said “Talat Mahmood” and another singer was added to my list of known singers.
I have always liked this song a lot.
