Wo subah kabhi to aayegi

Posted on: March 19, 2009

“Phir Subah Aayegi” was a different kind of movie where all the action happens in one night. And despite such a small time span, the movie manages to have time for several songs. This movie, I am told is based on the story “Crime and Punishment” by Russian Novelist Fyodor Dostoevsky.

Here is the theme song of the movie which is sung by Mukesh and Asha Bhonsle. This song, full of pathos and poignancy, is picturised on Raj Kapoor and Mala Sinha.

This movie had a solo Mukesh version as wrll, which gets played towards the end of the movie.

Sahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Khayyam.

Song-Wo subah kabhi to aayegi (Phir subah hogi) (1958) Singers-Mukesh/Mukesh, Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Sahir Ludhianvi, MD-Khayyam

Mukesh Asha Bhonsle Duet version
wo subah kabhi to aayegi
wo subah kabhi to aayegi
wo subah kabhi to aayegi

in kaali sadiyon ke sar se
jab raat ka aanchal dhhalkega
jab dukh ke baadal pighlengen
jab sukh ka saagar chhalkega
jab ambar jhhoom ke naachega
jab dharti naghme gaayegi
wo subah kabhi to aayegi
wo subah kabhi to aayegi

hmm hmm hmm hmm
aa aa aa aa

jis subah ki khaatir yug yug se
ham sab mar mar kar jeete hain
aaa aaa aaa aaa
aaa aaa aaa aaa

jis subah ki amrit ki dhun mein
ham zehar ke pyaale peete hain
hmm hmm hmm
in bhooki pyaasi roohon per
ek din to karam farmaayegi (aa aa aa
wo subah kabhi to aayegi
wo subah kabhi to aayegi

hmm hmm hmm
aa aa aa aa

maana ke abhi tere mere
armaanon ki keemat kuch bhi nahin
hmm hmm hmm
mitti ka bhi hai kuchh mol magar
insaanon ki keemat kuchh bhi nahin
aa aa aa
insaanon ki izzat jab jhoothhe sikko mein na toli jaayegi
wo subah kabhi to aayegi
wo subah kabhi to aayegi
wo subah kabhi to aayegi

aaa aaa aaa aaa
hmm hmm hmm hmm

Mukesh solo version
daulat ke liye jab aurat ki
kismat ko na becha jaayega
chaahat ko na kuchla jaayega
gairat ko na becha jaayega
apne kaale kartooton per
jab ye duniya sharmaayegi
wo subah kabhi to aayegi
wo subah kabhi to aayegi

beetenge kabhi to din aakhir
ye bhookh ke aur bekaari ke
tootenge kabhi to but aakhir
daulat ki izaaraadaari ke
jab ek anokhi duniya ki
buniyaad uthhaayi jaayegi
wo subah kabhi to aayegi
wo subah kabhi to aayegi

Beautiful song! Asha’s voice seems to just float in the air, and the whole song conveys hope in despair. I have always loved this song. Thanks for playing this song, Atul.

Lovely song, Atul.
I have seen this movie. Has its depressing moments no doubt.
Quite hard-hitting.

Cheno-o-arab hamara, hindustan hamara,
rehne ko ghar nahin hai saara jahan hamara,

Here is the link to this cynical/clever parody created by Sahir :

In the film, there are three versions of this song. Mukesh-Asha Duet, Asha solo ( short version) and towards the end of the film again Mukesh-Asha short but faster version. In the last version, the mukhda line changes from ‘wo subah kabhi to aayegi’ to ‘wo subah hami se aayegi’ and lyrics are different from the first two versions.

Video clip containing all the three versions :

A rare gem by Rafi+Talat, a superb composition by C.Arjun, & beautifully penned by Jan-Nisar Akhtar. I listened to a live interview of C.Arjun by Ameen Sayani on radio Vividh Bharti in the prog. ” Sangeet ke Sitaron ki Mehfil” about 25-30 yrs ago, wherein, C.Arjun had told about the interesting story behind the creation of this song …. & that story was …
AS = Ameen Sayani, CA = C.Arjun.
AS: Susheela ka gaana jo Rafi saahab ne Talat saahab ke saath gaaya tha. aise bahut kam gaane hain jo in dono ne saath milkar gaaye hain.
CA: sachchi baat hai Ameen bhai. un dino ka ek dogaana chal raha tha Sahir saahab ka “woh subah kabhi to aayegi”. Mujhe bahut achchha laga woh gaana. Main Akhtar saahab ko hameshaa bolaa karta tha ki Sahir saahab ne aisa kyun likha hai ki “woh subah kabhi to aayegi”? Yeh zaraa ‘suspense’waali baat ho gayi. honaa chaahiye “subah zaroor aayegi”. Akhtar saahab ko yeh baat janch gayi aur bole ki ‘kal mere ghar pe aa jaana, apan ek gaana banaayenge’, … to main unke
ghar gaya, unhone mujhe yeh diya mukhdaa “Gham ki andheri raat mein dil ko na beqaraar kar, subah zaroor aayegi subah ka intezaar kar” …

Thanks Doctor sahab. Aap ko to 25-30 saal purani baat abhi tak yaad hai. I love this kind of “stories behind the curtain”. Hope to read some more from you.

Great song. The era of golden music will never return. We are very lucky to be in the time when Rafi, Mukesh, Talat, Hemant, Kishore and above all Kundan Lal Saigal made our lives sweet
