Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Sakhi ri sun

Posted on: March 31, 2009

I have posted a few songs from “Miss Mary” (1957) in the past. I described one of those songs (” O raat ke musaafir” ) as a Chaayageet song.

Lalitha, a regular reader of this blog, feels that “sakhi ri sun bole papeeha us paar” is also a song of the same genre. I listened to this song, and thought that it does not fall in that category because there is no mention of “chaand” in this song. 😉

It is a special song nevertheless. It is one of the earlist songs where the two Mangeshkar sisters ( Lata and Asha) sing together. I recall that there was another such song in “Azaad” (1955) in the same era.

This song is written by Rajinder Krishan and the music is composed by Hemant Kumar. The song is picturised on Meena Kumari and Meenakshi.

Thanks for playing the song, Atul. In my mind, I feel like I am standing by a river, at night, with a moon overhead, the wind blowing gently through the trees, and a papihaa is calling from the other side, when I listen to this song. It evoked this feeling in my mind, which is why I labeled it as a chayageet song, even though there is no mention of raat or chand in it! I just wish we had more such melodious songs in movies these days.

Ah, I see a couple of familiar names from the blog world… Hello! Atul, this is very nice, the best song from Miss Mary. (I can’t understand the Hindi, but fortunately, my T-Series DVD does have subs on the songs, whatever other faults it might have also.) But I don’t see any evidence that Miss Mary’s student here, Kiran, is being played by B. Saroja. B. Saroja isn’t mentioned anywhere in the film credits or in any credits that I’ve looked at on the Net. (Unless she is being called something else here…) Moreover, I don’t think anyone out there lists both actresses for this song. It would be nice if someone did solve that mystery.

Welcome to this blog. Richard S. I may myself try to solve the mystery but interestingly enough, this song was not even there in my VCD, if I recall correctly. But that should not be an excuse for me, because the pupil of Meena Kumari appears in the movie even otherwise.

I will investigate on my own too.

hi atul
i think the one who played meena kumari’s student in this movie was jamuna (if i am not mistakens she is the same one who played gouri in the sunil dutt-nutan starrer milan)

but one thing is certain she is not saroja devi

Actually it was Jamuna who did this role in the Tamil version of this movie, but the girl in this scene doesn’t look a whole lot like Jamuna. I agree, this is definitely not Saroja Devi.

Hi. Jamuna played Meena Kumari’s student later in the film (and she was quite amusing too). This is an earlier student, at the school where Miss Mary lost her job before going to the place where she would become the Jamuna character’s teacher. Jamuna played that role in at least a couple of versions of the film (including both the Hindi and Tamil versions).

There was a fantastic Kanhaiya song in this movie, “Vrindavan ka kishen kanahaiya sabki Aankhon ka tara”
Appreciate if you can post this song.

The actress in the clip is Meenakshi, not Jamuna or Saroja Devi. Jamuna comes in later, as Meena Kumari’s student (and younger sister).
