In Memory of Meena Kumari :
Mehjabeen Bano, who gained name, fame and huge popularity as Meena Kumari, was born on 1st August 1932. Child artist, tragedy queen, poet and singer, are the various attributes to her name. Had she lived to see this day, she would have been 88 today i.e. the two fat ladies of housie. Really, she was just 40 when she left this world, her temporary abode.
Honestly, I have not seen many of her movies. Some of the earlier movies like “Sahib Bibi aur Ghulam” and “Chiraag kahan aur roshni kahan” I have seen on TV longback. The unforgettable “Dil Apna aur preet praayi” and “Ghazal”, “Kaajal” , “Mere apne” and “Bahu Begum” also on TV. “Pakeeza” is the only film I have seen on the big screen and revisited in recent times. The songs of ‘Pakeeza” are embedded in mind from early childhood, even before I am conscious of listening to radio.
I belong to a family of film buffs, and the only family outings known to my parents and their brothers and sisters was going to watch movies in Theatre. Discussing about the film stars and their lives and their movies was a favourite pastime of all of them. Emphasis has always been on education, doing well in studies, but watching movies was dangled as a prize in front of us while in school. But none of them bought Records or record players as far as I know. I had not seen a record player in my life or touched one till I was in college. One of my college friend’s father had one. That was one L-P record player, kept in his room, alongwith all his prized possessions of school and college days. That was a separate room, a little far from their house where the family lived. So when exams were near and I would go to the friends place and she will take me to that room, where no one would disturb us and it was a quite place. It was in a chawl system, and that room was kept separate and maintained to be used as guest room as and when need arose. So that was my actual ‘darshan’ of a record player. We played some records available on the player sometime. Afraid of damaging it, we left it alone mostly. I recall only one or two names of those records, one of them was ‘Nasbandi” and other may have been “Dastak”.
Then there is the childhood memory of Pakeeza songs. Usually on a Sunday, one of the nieghbours on the floor above us, who had ‘ishq’ with Pakeeza songs, he would play it in on his record player. That sound has never gone away from the consciousness. Right from ‘inhi logon ne’ to ‘thhaare rahiyo’ to “chalte chalte”. Childhood impressions are very strong, there is no denying that. My knowledge of the Gujarati language also belong to the same period. Terms like “advanu nathi” (don’t touch) and “saras chhe” (Its nice) were never forgotten. It was in the BEST officers quarters, so even if we shifted houses, we were in the same building and nieghbours. The kids all played and grew up together even studied together. But we kids would never go to their house as that aunty was a stickler for neatness and cleanliness of the house and the uncle was a disciplinarian sort of person. So that explains why I never actually saw the record player that played “Pakeeza“ songs most Sundays. Let me make it clear that only the songs of Pakeeza were heard from the house and nothing else. Explains the “Ishq” of Pakeeza songs.
Now of course the record playing era is also over. Youtube is, the be all and the serve all for people like me. Meena Kumari, for me is always about her urdu diction and that voice full of emotions. Some of the material read in urdu magazine’s about her is surfacing in the mind. Like someone saying that she was the most beautiful of all the female artists of her time. Meaning, more beautiful than Madhu Bala ? it is difficult to digest. But her voice and diction is the instantly recognizable feature of her persona and more appealing than her beauty, for my generation.
So I found this song of the film “Tamasha” to post on this occasion. I was put up for this post by Peevicie’s Mom. She acted as a prompt or the catalyst for this writeup. The song is a solo of Lata Mangeshkar, picturised on Meena Kumari. Lyricist is Bharat Vyas. The music composer include Manna dey with Khemchand Prakash. It is not clear whether they composed the songs as a team or separately.
The films cast includes Dev Anand, Ashok Kumar and Kishore Kumar.
I will conclude with a factual impression about Meena Kumari, that she was like a rare flower. It bloomed fascinatingly for a long while, but could not deal with its own beauty and frailty. So it wilted fast in neglect of its soul as the real beauty was in the soul.
Hazaaron saal nargis apni be-noori pe roti hai
Tab kahin jaa ke hota hai chaman mein koyi deedawar paida…..
Song-Bhool sakey na ham tumhen aur tum to jaa ke bhool gaye (Tamaasha)(1952) Singer-Lata Mangeshkar, Lyrics-Bharat Vyas, MD-Khemchand Prakash-Manna Dey
Lyrics
Kyun Ankhiyaan bhar aayin een

Aaaa aaaa
Kyun Ankhiyaan bhar aayin
Bhool sakey na ham tumhen
Aur tum to jaa ke bhool gaye ae
Bhool sakey na ham tumhen
Aur tum to jaa ke bhool gaye ae
Ro ro ke kehta hai dil
kyun dil ko lagaa ke bhool gaye ae
Bhool sakey na ham tumhen

Dil ke badle gham diyaa
Muskuraayi thhi ghadi bhar

Ek pal ab chain na miley
Tum jhalak dikhaa ke bhool gaye ae
Bhool sakey na ham tumhen
Aur tum to jaa ke bhool gaye ae
Bhool sakey na ham tumhen
Kaun si thhi bairan ghadi wo
Jab ke tujh se uljhe nayan
Kaun si thhi bairan ghadi wo
Jab ke tujh se uljhe nayan
Sukh ke meethhe jhoole mein rum jhum
Jhoom uthhaa thhaa paagal sa mann
Din sunehre raatein rupehli ee eee
Tum mile main huyi magan
Aankh khuli to
Maine dekhaa
Dekhaa thhaa ek jhoothha sapan
Sapnon ke sansaar mein
Mera mann bharmaa ke bhool gaye ae
Bhool sakey na ham tumhen
Aur tum to jaa ke bhool gaye ae
Bhool sakey na ham tumhen

“Kaajal”(1965) was a movie that I knew little about when I was growing up. I watched this movie in 1978 when my went to college and my movie watching spree began with a vengeance. Those days, I only liked “new” movies and songs and scoffed at “old” movies and songs. But I had heard about old movies, so I would go and watch them when no “new” movie was there for me to watch. The old movies tended to run to empty house and so buying tickets for these movies was not a problem. I wondered if a day will come in future when one would be able to watch “new” movies with the same ease, without needing to queue up and black marketeers having a field day. Believe it or not, today we are actually in that situation where one can buy tickets of even brand new movies without needing to form a queue in the movie hall.
I watched “Kaajal”(1965) in a movie hall called Ratan Talkies. I knew that it was an old movie but still I mustered up enough tolerance within me and went to watch the movie. I was a few minutes late and the movie had already started. When I found that the movie had Raj Kumar (tragedy Kumar) and Meena Kumari (tragedy queen), I wondered if I had made a mistake and I would have to spend a misery filled three hours in the hall. But as soon as the songs of the movie began, I as well as others exclaimed-“arre ye gaana is film ka hai !”. Songs kept coming one after another, with the same collective response from the movie watchers.
Seeing that I had become a regular movie watcher only in that year, I had a lot of catching up to do. I was not aware about many of the actors that were there in the movie. Today, when I look back at the starcast of “Kaajal”(1965), I realise that it was full of big name actors. But when I was watching the movie at that time, I could identify only Raj Kumar, Meena Kumari and Dharmendra, aand that was all !
The movie had eleven songs in it. As many as ten songs have been covered in the past.
Here are the details of the songs already covered in the blog:-

I came to know thanks to some whatsapp messages that today (12 june) is the birthday of Padmini (12 june 1932-24 September 2006). When I watched “Kaajal”(1965) in the movie hall. I had no clue about her. I did not even know that the actress seen in a few songs in the movie was Padmini.
On the occasion of Padmini’s birth anniversary, here is the eleventh and final song from “Kaajal”(1965) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle. Sahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Ravi.
The song is picturised as an archtypical get together song in a palatial home where people gather and politely watch a lady singing (while holding a sitar) and another lady dancing. In this song, Meena Kumari lip syncs while Padmini dances. Look at the people watching the performance. During those days, I did not even recognise Durga Khote !
“Kaajal”(1965) was a movie that was worth watching for its songs. Today, I would go to the extent of saying that only the songs of the movie must be watched. The story is too melodramatic for me. 🙂
Many decades later (after I began this blog), I came to know that Padmini had two more sisters and they too were dancing stars like her, and that together they were known as Travancore sisters.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Avinash Scrapwala.
With this song, songs of “Kaajal”(1965) are now fully represented in the blog and this movie joins the list of movies that are YIPPEED in the blog.

maa ke sapooton
bahnon ke bhai
zara sunte jaana ye meri kahaani
zara sunte jaana ye meri kahaani
bichhaaye jo kismat ne kaante
unhen bhi gale se lagaaya
magar haaye re badnaseebi
tere man ko ye bhi na bhaaya
chali aisi aandhi
uthha aisa toofaan
bhikhaaran bani aaj mahlon ki raani
zara sunte jaana ye meri kahaani
bhatakti phiroon aaj dar dar
hai roti bina pet khaali
uchhaale zamaane ne sikke
na roti kisi ne uchhaali
har ek dil hai maila
har ek aankh bhookhi
hawas ne sabhi ka kiya khoon paani
zara sunte jaana ye meri kahaani
ye dharti ka nanha sa munna
hai rahbar tumhaare watan ka
ye maangega jab bheekh tumse
to jhuk jaayega sar gagan ka
magar tumpe phir bhi asar kuchh na hoga
tumhaare liye khel hai zindgaani
zara sunte jaana ye meri kahaani
o is desh ke rahne waalon
naari ko devi kahne waalon
maa ke sapooton
bahnon ke bhai
zara sunte jaana ye meri kahaani
zara sunte jaana ye meri kahaani
zara sunte jaana ye meri kahaani

Thhi jin se pal bhar ki pehchaan

Thhi jin se pal bhar ki pehchaan
Tu hai meri zindagi ka sahaara

Blog Day : | 3500 | Post No. : | 14061 |
Today is Friday, 16 february 2018. It is just another day. But trust us to find something remarkable even out of seemingly routine matters. Today is a special day for the blog. It is the 3500th day for the blog.
It follows that the blog has seen 34 such occasions in the past as well. But we took notice of such kind of centuries for the first time only last year on 8 november 2017 when it was the 3400th day for the blog.
A quick mental calculation would show that there are 365 days in a year and so ten years have 3650 days (decimal system zindabaad ! 🙂 ). Add two additional days for two leap years. So the blog will turn one decade old or 3652 days old in another 152 days from now, on 19 july 2018 !
Another quick mental calculation would reveal that 3500 x 4= 14000. The blog has 14060 songs posts as of now. So it turns out that the blog is going on at a strike rate of just over four songs a day for 3500 days !
When a blog lasts this long and adds so many articles to it, then one is able to reel off quite a few statistics associated with it. I find that the blog by now has songs from as many as 3835 movies. As many as 1080 of these movies have already been YIPPEED ! So we no longer need to search for any additional songs for these 1080 movies because all of them have already been accounted for.
In the process of discussing songs, many artists have completed their own milestones in the blog. 35 music directors, 28 lyricists and 21 singers have more than one hundred songs each in the blog. Some of them in fact have their songs running into thousands in the blog.
There are a few artists who have almost all their songs covered in the blog. All available songs of K L Saigal, Suraiyya and Sajjad Hussain are showcased in the blog. Artists like Naushad, O P Nayyar, S D Burman, Madan Mohan, Talat Mehmood etc have less than 100 songs each left to be covered in the blog.
The blog is a great example of the power of online collaboration of likeminded individuals. All these individuals are making valuable contributions through their articles, lyrics, comments, suggestions etc. Some of these contributors have completed their own centuries in the blog.
The kind of skill sets that our contributors possess for the cause of HFM can be the envy of many professional set ups. We have contributors who are like research scholars and their original researches in the field of HFM have helped add to the information in the field of HFM.
The thing that pleases me most is the fact that we all feel like a group of people close to each other. Some of us have actually met each other and continue to meet each other from time to time. We have got to know each other quite closely and we often share in the joys and sorrow of each other.
I have a feeling that what we have seen so far is just the tip of the iceberg as far as our work in the field of HFM is concerned. The real extent of the iceberg has not yet been revealed. Lots of valuable background information and statistics pertaining to HFM have been collected during this nearly one decade long journey and that information has not yet appeared in the blog.
On the occasion of the blog touching 3500 days, here is a joie de vivre genre of song from “Shatranj” (1956). This song, the sixth out of eight songs from the movie is sung by Asha Bhonsle and chorus. Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist. Music is composed by C Ramchandra.
The song is picturised as a dance song on Sheila Vaz and others. The lead pair of Ashok Kumar and Meena Kumari are also visible in the picturisatoon as spectators.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra. He points out that one line in the audio version differs from the video version. Trust Prakashchandra to be able to differentiate between such fine details. 🙂
