The Bollywood movie “It happened one night” was quite an “inspiring” movie. It inspired many Bollywood movies. One such movie was “Chori Chori”.
One “advantage” that Bollywood enjoys over Hollywood is that desi versions of Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert do not just talk, they sing and dance too. And the songs and dances of “Chori chori” are hugely popular even to this day.
This song begins as a puppet show where two puppets resembling the hero and heroine are seen dancing. Soon they are seen transforming into the real life Hero and Heroine who sing this lovely duet. It is sung by Lata and Manna Dey. Shailendra is the lyricist whereas Shankar Jaikishan created the wonderful music.
Song-Jahaan main jaati hoon (Chori Chori) (1956) Singers-Lata, Manna Dey, Lyrics-Shailendra, MD-Shankar Jaikishan
Lyrics
jahaan main jaati hoon wahin chale aate ho
chori chori mere dil mein samaate ho
ye to bataao ke tum mere kaun ho
jahaan main jaati hoon wahin chale aate ho
chori chori mere dil mein samaate ho
ye to bataao ke tum mere kaun ho
dil ki dil se lagan ki ye baat hai
pyaar ki raah jatan ki ye baat hai
mujhse na poochho ki tum mere kaun ho
O, main to shor machaaungi, shor machaaungi
O, main to shor machaaungi
karni tumhaari sab ko bataaungi
karni tumhaari sab ko bataaungi
khair jo chaaho chale jaao mere dar se
chhodo ye aanaa jaanaa dil ki dagar se
ye to bataao ke tum mere kaun ho …
O, main ne kyaa buraa kiyaa hai, kyaa buraa kiyaa hai
O, main ne kyaa buraa kiyaa hai
dil de kar hi dil le liyaa hai
dil de kar hi dil le liyaa hai
kisi bade gyaani-dhyaani ko bulaao
abhi-abhi yahaan faislaa karaao
mujhse na poochho ke tum mere kaun ho …
O, dil hi jab huye deewaane, jab huye deewaane
O, dil hi jab huye deewaane
kahnaa hamaaraa ab kaun maane
kahnaa hamaaraa ab kaun maane
jahaan main jaati hoon wahin chale aate ho
chori chori mere dil mein samaate ho
ye to bataao ke tum mere kaun ho
mujhse na poochho ki tum mere kaun ho
ye to bataao ke tum mere kaun ho

Atul, are you familiar with any other song that uses this puppets, coming to life as the protagonist. I am wondering how did the directors have this idea. Was it a stroke of genius, merely a copycat act, or a bit of both?
