Though it is the music director who gets most of the credit for a song, it is the assistant music director/ music arranger who does the actual legwork, and should get the real credit.
Ravi was the assistant to Hemant Kumar till “Nagin”. When Hemant Kumar received the award for best music for this movie in a packed hall, he went back to the rear of the hall and handed his trophy to Ravi telling him that the awrd was actually Ravi’s. That is how magnanimous and large hearted Hemant Kumar was.
Ravi’s contribution in “Nagin” was not just being the assistant director. He also played the by now legendary “been” tune in the song “man dole tan dole”.
During those days, S D Burman’s song “allah megh de paani de” (based on Bangla folk music) was a rage and many music directors had lifted it unabashedly, using the same mukhda. Hemant Kumar also wanted to do the same. But Ravi advised that it would be better to use this tune after some modifications. Ravi carried out these modifications and came out with the song “chhod de patang meri chhod de”. Though the song for this tune is inspired from “Allah Megh de”, Ravi modified it so beautifully that few people could even guess the source of inspiration for this song !
It is a beautiful song, written by Rajinder Krishan and sung by Hemant Kumar and Lata. The song was picturised on Pradeep Kumar and Vyjyanti Mala.

wow what a different song. and we had heard of only the popular “man dole”.
