Aankhon aankhon mein ham tum ho gaye

Posted on: April 28, 2009

I was not even aware that there was a Dev Anand movie called “Mahal”(1969). Of course I have heard the songs of this movie, without being aware that the song I was listening to was from this movie.

This song is quite a hummable song. Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle have sung this song very nicely. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist and Kalyanji Anandji composed the music.

It is a Dev Anand movie and in this movie, Dev Anand is seen acting with Asha Parekh, an actress one generation younger to him. It is nothing compared to what he did in his subsequent movies, where he acted heroines two generation, and then three generation youngers to him. 😉

I have no idea how this movie fared. Since I was not aware of this movie, chances are, this movie did not do all that well at the box office. The songs of this movie were of decent quality though.

Song-Aankhon aankhon me ham tum ho gaye (Mahal) (1969) Singers-Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi , MD-Kalyanji Anandji

Lyrics

aankhon-aankhon mein ham-tum ho gaye deewaane
baaton-baaton mein dekhaa ban gaye afsaane
aankhon-aankhon mein ham-tum ho gaye deewaane

yaad karo ye sabne kaha tha
dil jo diya to ye haal hoga
chain na aayega neend naa aayegi
kisi ka kahaa ham tum maane nahin maane
aankhon-aankhon mein ham-tum ho gaye deewaane

ham ajnabi the tum the paraaye
ik doosre ke dil mein samaaye
ham aur tum mein uf ye mohabbat
kaise ho gayi ham tum jaane nahin jaane
baaton-baaton mein dekhaa ban gaye afsaane

kitni haseen ye tanhaayiyaan hain
tanhaayiyon mein ruswaayiyaan hain
ruswaayiyon se darte nahin ham
chhodo pyaar ki baaten
chhodo ye bahaane
aankhon-aankhon mein ham-tum ho gaye deewaane
baaton-baaton mein dekhaa ban gaye afsaane

Ankhon Ankhon mein is a fabulous song. Composed with grace and sung with care. This is a quintessential KA number, low on notes, low on instruments. I love to point out something about this no – it used only the first three notes of the saptasur in the mukhra.. remarkeable achievement indeed. Today there are composers selling their stuff claiming to have used only 3 swars, KA did that long back and nobody knows.

Directed by Dev’s chum cum chamcha Shankar Mukherjee, Mahal, with its Darjeeling backdrop did not survive beyond a few weeks at the theatres. It was more in the line of a thriller, where the villian turned out to be the innocent guy, in this case Abhi Bhattacharya
