Ae dil kahaan teri manzil

Posted on: May 23, 2009

Till sometime back, I was not even aware of this movie called “Maaya” (1961). Now I have become aware of this movie because of its remarkable songs. Like the movie, its songs were unknown to me too, but not any more.

These songs may not have become hugely popular, but then popularity among lay public is not really the only yardstick. In fact, one cannot judge quality just by popularity of songs among aam janta.

Salil Chowdhary was one music director whose songs were consistently of high quality. It is unfortunate that they did not become as popular as many other songs. But when it came to touching the heart strings of discerning audience Salil Chowdhury’s music is right up there, near the top.

I have posted a Lata song from this movie viz “ja re ja ud ja re panchhi”. What an amazing song that is. Then I posted a Rafi song viz “tasweer teri dil me jis din se utari hai”.

Now two outstanding songs sung by two differen singers in one movie should be enough for one movie. But that is not all. There are further pleasant surprises in the movie.

Here is a third amazing song from this movie. It is sung by a different singer. The voice sounds like Hemant Kumar, but it is not Hemant Kumar but a name that is new for me, viz Dwijen Mukherji. And this song is quite a superbly sung song.

This song was picturised on Dev Anand. It is written by Majrooh Sultanpuri.

Three gems in one movie ! Salil Chowdhary, the underestimated music director of yesteryears surely shows us in this movie what he was capable of.

PS-Now I have come to know that this song has a female version too, which is sung by Lata. Now I have included the link to the female version too, which is sung by Lata and it is picturised on Mala Sinha.

Song-Ae dil kahaan teri manzil (Maaya) (1961) Singer-Dwijen Mukherji/Lata, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Salil Chowdhari

Lyrics

ai dil kahaan teri manzil
naa koyi deepak hai naa koyi taaraa hai
gum hai zameen door aasmaan
ai dil kahaan teri manzil
naa koyi deepak hai naa koyi taaraa hai
gum hai zameen door aasmaan
ai dil kahaan teri manzil

kis liye mil mil ke dil tootate hain
kis liye ban ban mahal tootate hain
kis liye dil tootate hain
ho kis liye mil mil ke dil tootate hain
kis liye ban ban mahal tootate hain
kis liye dil tootate hain
patthar se poochhaa sheeshe se poochhaa
Khaamosh hai ye sab ki zabaan
ai dil kahaan teri manzil

dhal gaye naadaan wo aanchal ke saaye
rah gaye raste mein apne paraaye
rah gaye apne paraaye
ho dhal gaye naadaan wo aanchal ke saaye
rah gaye raste mein apne paraaye
rah gaye apne paraaye
aanchal bhi chhoota saathi bhi chootaa
na hamsafar na caarwaan
ai dil kahaan teri manzil
naa koyi deepak hai naa koyi taaraa hai
gum hai zameen door aasmaan
ai dil kahaan teri manzil
naa koyi deepak hai naa koyi taaraa hai
gum hai zameen door aasmaan
ai dil kahaan teri manzil

I didn’t know that the singer was not Hemant Kumar until now, but it is such a beautiful song. It is amazing when you think of all the great songs that came out routinely in those days, even in mediocre movies, and yet very few songs come close to being hummable these days.

For the admirers of Salil Chowdhury this song has been one of the most amazing compositions. I guess you didn’t recognise Lata’s brilliant operatic voice at the back during the choral interlude music.

I had heard this song in a programme. Two Maharashtrian Singers had sung that song. Aparna Sant had sung the Lata’s part. It was sung by Aparna with such a quality that was breathtaking. From that day, some 8 years ago, I was looking out for that song.
Atul, the way you have put everything above, hats off to you. That was really great.
Thanks

I had posted this song two months back. I had myself forgotten about this song from “Maaya”. What an amazing song, is it not ?

Male voice is like Hemant Da’s voice, but this is another singer, who sings from Heart.
