Raahi matwaale

Some time back, I had compiled a list of rail songs. It had about 20 odd songs and I thought that I had all the rail songs covered. That list of songs is still there in my other ( by now rather defunct) blog.
But I have been discovering more rail songs all these days. I must have discovered at least another one dozen rail songs that were not there in my original list.
Sometimes, I find that some well known songs, which I had only listened to, were also rail songs.
Take this fantastic song “raahi matwaale” from “Waaris” (1954), for instance. It is regarded as one of the finest songs sung by Talat Mahmood ( alongwith Suraiyya), but the fact that it is a rail song was not known to me till yesterday.
Qamar Jalalabadi has written this song and Anil Biswas is the music director.
This song has many versions , I believe. Here are two versions. The faster version is mostly in Talat Mahmood’s voice. The slower version is sung by Talat Mahmood and Suraiyya both.
PS-This song has a Suraiyya solo version as well. So this is a song with three versions in all.
What a gem of a rail song this is !

Hahaha, yes, Bollywood movies rely on such misleading circumstantial evidences to carry the movie forward.

I had never heard the slower version till today. I am wondering if there is yet another version after watching the video, because the lady sitting next to Suraiya (?) slips the ring on to her finger, and then the train crashes. Knowing Hindi movies, this would be where the hero will come and identify his wife using her ring, and then he will either go crazy or remarry, and then she will come back and sing the song in an effort to find him, and that is how they will find each other in the last scene of the movie. Perhaps I should have gone into film direction for a career!
