Blog Day : |
6469 | Post No. : | 20100 |
this is 20100th song post of the blog
If we liken this blog to a Train, and posts to stations, then important posts can be considered important stations. We in this blog consider century posts as important destinations. By that token thousandth posts are very important stations. Even among them, post numbers 5000, 10000, and their multiples are considered very very important destinations.
Last month on 11 March 2026, the blog reached the very very important destination of 20000th song post.
Sudhir Jee, who penned that landmark article gave some food for thought regarding the significance of that landmark of 20000 song posts :-
In five decades of recorded data (1931-80), there is an estimated approximation – about 45 thousand songs, give or take. Beyond that, another 45 years of an industry that I and more in my category have not tracked sincerely. But taking just a crude estimate, let us say, another 40 thousand songs. We are talking of a huge repository that is about 85 thousand songs. I am sure, it is a number that cannot be matched by any other segment of the industry world wide. And if I take a look at the counter on the top of this article, a whopping 20+ percent of that repository is already showcased on Atul-Song-a-Day.
A moment it takes to absorb this. Time to ruminate, to contemplate and to let this number sink in inside.
We in the blog are mainly interested in songs that were created upto let us say 1985.
If we count the number of movies that were produced between 1931 to 1985, 6504 movies were produced in which 50000 songs were created. This is the figure given in HFGK (1981-1985)
Now let us compare that with the figures that the blog has achieved:
| Total created | (1931 to 1985) | Represented in blog | % figure (Approx) | Remarks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Total songs | 50000 | 20100 | 40% | |
| Total movies | 6504 | 5200 | 80% | Only about 1300 movies are not represented, most of them unavailable |
Out of the 5200 movies that are represented in the blog, 1580 movies are YIPPEED. In other words, we now need to cover songs only from 5200-1580=3600 movies plus as yet unrepresented movies. So this narrows down movies of interest for us.
When we take a look at the decadewise breakup of songs, we get these figures:-
| Decade | Number of songs created (approx) | Number of songs in the blog | Remarks |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1931-1940 | 9000 | 689 | Most songs are unavailable |
| 1941-1950 | 10254 | 3992 | 39 % songs covered |
| 1951-1960 | 8654 | 6004 | 69% songs covered |
| 1961-1970 | 6521 | 4373 | 67% songs covered |
| 1971-1980 | 6275 | 3210 | 51 % songs covered |
| 1981-1985 | 5000 | 794 | 16% songs covered |
We observe that majority of songs composed during 1950s, 1960s and 1970s are already covered in the blog.
When we take a look at the decadewise breakup of movies, we get these figures:-
| Decade | Number of movies created | Number of movies represented in the blog | Movies YIPPEED | Remarks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1931-1940 | 927 | 238 | 12 | Most movies and their songs are not available |
| 1941-1950 | 1193 | 887 | 179 | 74 % movies of the decade represented in the blog. 15 % of the movies of the decade are YIPPEED |
| 1951-1960 | 1111 | 1054 | 484 | 95% movies of the decade represented in the blog. 43% of the movies of the decade are YIPPEED |
| 1961-1970 | 930 | 913 | 459 | 98% movies of the decade are represented in the blog. 49 % of the movies of the decade are YIPPEED |
| 1971-1980 | 1234 | 940 | 381 | 76 % movies of the decade are represented. 31 % of the movies of the decade are YIPPEED |
| 1981-1985 | 843 | 287 | 45 | 34 % movies of the period are represented. 5 % of the movies of the period are YIPPEED |
We observe that most movies of the decades of 1950s, 1960s and 1970s are already showcased in the blog.
In brief, we can conclude that in the process of covering 20000 plus song posts in the blog, we have ended up covering a sizeable number of movies and songs of the golden era of Hindi movies.
With this post, we reach the next century. In other words, this write up is blog’s 20100th song post of the blog. For this occasion, I have picked a rare song. Only the singer, viz Zohrabai Ambalewali is well known, otherwise most other things about this song is lesser known. Lyricist is Pt Bhardwaj who is an known figure for me and he is making his debut in the blog. Music is composed by lesser known music director Vasant Kumar Naidu.
The movie is “Chamakti Bijli”(1946). This extremely obscure movie was produced by Homi Master for Central Pictures, Bombay. The movie had Sulochana, E Bilimoria, M Elizer, Chemist, Suleman, Ghani, Sheikh, Mehnidi Raza, Mohammad Ali, Shrimati Nadira etc in it.
“Chamakti Bijli”(1946) had 9 exremely obscure songs in it. One song from the movie was covered in the blog nine years ago.
Here is this extremely obscure song that bowls the listener over the very first time one listens to it. Such a lovely song was lying forgotten for all these decades. It was only by chance that I managed to come across it.
With this song, we reach the milestone of 20100 song posts in the blog. This century was achieved in 24 days which is an average of over four songs daily. Here is hoping that we will at least maintain this rate of covering songs, if not better it in the comping days.
It is the encouragement of all concerned in various ways that is ensuring that the blog is chugging along nicely non stop without a break for last 2292 days (over six years, last DOT day being 25 December 2019). I take this opportunity to thank one and all. Let us hope that the blog will keep going on and on and will reach many more destinations, and will keep finding many forgotten musical gems in the process.
Song-Chhab dikhlaa jaa tu (Chamakti Bijli)(1946) Singer-Zohrabai Ambalewali, Lyricist-Pt Bhardwaj, MD-Vasant Kumar Naidu
