Suno suno ek nayi kahaani

There are some songs which can be categorised as “story” songs. Here the singer tells a story in song form. In fact, telling story in song form is an old traditional art in India and Bollywood movies are definitely inspired from that tradition when coming up with such songs.
Here is a superb example of a “story” song. This is from a movie called “Naata” (1955). Here Abhi Bhattacharya tells a tale in the form of a song, ostensibly to the little girl keen to hear a story, but there are other keen listeners too, including two pretty ladies, one of them being Madhubala, whose periodic blushing shows that she is paying full attention to the tale being recounted.
What a superbly sung song it is. It is sung by Rafi whose voicekeeps the listener spellbound throughout the duration of the song.
The lyrics are quite precise and to the point and they are written by Tanveer Naqvi. The music that accompanies the song is just wonderful.The music harmonium that plays in this song must be one of the best example of Harmonium music in a Bollywood song. The music director is S Mohinder, one of the highly talented yet criminally neglected music directors that Bollywood has produced.
