Dil jale to jale

“Taxi Driver” (1954) is too old a movie for much of the present day music lovers. Still, its songs continue to charm people even today.
And interestingly, it is only just recently that I have begun to discover the songs of this movie.
This particular song “dil jale to jale” is one that I was simply not aware of. I listened to this song for the first time just today.
I watched the picturisation too, and found that it was picturised nicely on Shiela Ramani and Dev Anand.
It is a drunkard song. It is nice to see a female singing a drunkard song for a change.
The song is sung by Lata. The lyrics of Sahir Ludhianvi are just superb. And the way this song has been composed by S D Burman is just marvellous.
It is a gem that I stumbled upon just now. And I will certainly cherish listening to this song.

Song-Dil jale to jale (Taxi Driver) (1954) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Sahir Ludhianvi,MD-S D Burman
Lyrics
dil jale to jale
dil jale to jale, gam pale to pale
kisi ki na sun gaaye jaa
dil jale to jale, gam pale to pale
kisi ki na sun gaaye jaa
o jeene waale
aag se aag bujhaa le
o jeene waale
o jeene waale
aag se aag bujhaa le
jag ki na sun, pyaar ki dhun
jag ki na sun, pyaar ki dhun jhoom ke gaa le
dil jale to jale, gham pale to pale
kisi ki na sun gaaye jaa
o jeene waale
ye kaliyaan ye taare
o jeene waale
o jeene waale
ye kaliyaan ye taare
chup to hain magar, takate idhar
chup to hain magar, takate idhar kahte hain saare
dil jale to jale, gham pale to pale
kisi ki na sun gaaye jaa
o jeene waale
chhed haseen taraane
o jeene waale
o jeene waale
chhed haseen taraane
bichhde jo ab, milnaa hai kab
bichhde jo ab, milnaa hai kab, koyi na jaane
dil jale to jale, gham pale to pale
kisi ki na sun gaaye jaa
dil jale to jale, gham pale to pale
kisi ki na sun gaaye jaa

Firs tof all I would like to say thanks for this wonderful blog you have. Come quite often, though have never left behind a comment.
Very ungrateful of me!
I was searching this song, since I could hear it only faintly in the background in the opening scenes of Bombai ka Babu.
What is intriguing me now is your line that it is a drunkard song.
From the clip it looks as if both Sheila and Dev are quite sober.
Maybe there is a scene before it, where they show Sheila drinking.
Thannks for the song!

I love this song and others from the movie. Does anyone have an English translation of this song or others from Taxi Driver?

Unbelieveable that I’ve been listening to this song for ages and never watched the video. But I don’t think there’s any context of drunkenness to the song, is there?

This is a lovely film, I think Dev has said it’s one of his favorites too. And the songs are really wonderful…:-)
