Raat ko ji haay raat ko ji chamke taare

Posted on: July 23, 2009

Though this song is from “Aag” (1948), the music of this song, especially the beginning of the song sounded quite modern to me.

This song is written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and it is sung by Shamshad Begam and Mukesh. It is picturised as a stage song in a very Parsi theatre like manner, which was popular those days in Bombay. Ram Ganguly is the music director.

raat ko ji haay raat ko ji chamken taaren
raat ko ji chamken taaren
dekh balam mohe ankhiyaan maare ji main mar gayi raamaa
raat ko ji haay raat ko ji chamaken taaren
pahloo mein dil meraa paanv pasaare jii main kaa karoon raamaa

raat ko ji haay raat ko ji bole papiharaa
dekh balam moraa dole jiyaraa
dekh balam moraa dole jiyaraa ji main mar gayi raamaa
raat ko ji haay raat ko ji bole papiharaa
bhed khole teraa-meraa meraa-teraa
ho bhed khole teraa-meraa teraa ji main kaa karoon raamaa

raat ko ji hoy raat ko ji chamke chandaa
jaise balam tere pyaar kaa phandaa ji main mar gayi raamaa
raat ko ji haay raat ko ji chamke chandaa
tere bin paaye nahin chain yah bandaa ji main kaa karoon raamaa

raat ko ji haay raat ko ji udte baadal
dekh balam moraa chhod de aanchal ji main mar gayi raamaa
raat ko ji haay raat ko ji udte baadal
saath hamaare gori door chale-chali ji main kaa karoon raamaa

This is a pretty popular song.
At least I think it is – I have heard it a lot on radio during my younger days.
Or maybe the farmaish came from the same people in Jhumri Tilaiya all the time. 🙂

Jhumri Tilayya audience sent farmaish for new songs, and this song is from 1948. This song must have been played in the “purani filmon ke geet” programme, but I do not have any recollections of having listened to this song.

The song is picturised on Mohana Cabral and Vishwa Mehra (maternal uncle of Raj Kapoor). From the facial expression and teeth lines while filming the song on Vishwa Mehra, Raj Kapoor appears to have got a lot of similarity in his appearance. Vishwa Mehra was Production-in-Charge of R K Films who also got accredited as ‘Mama ji’.
