“Mohar” (1959) was a movie starring Shammi Kapoor and Geeta Bali, but not much is known about this movie today. This movie has flopped badly at the box office. And as luck would have it, Madan Mohan was the music director of this movie. Seeing his movie bomb at the box office was a fate that Madan Mohan suffered in most of the 92 movies in which he gave music.
So, it is to his great credit that despite the failure of his movies, his music still managed to survive and found appreciation from discerning listeners.
But movies flopping in 1959 meant that the exposure that the songs of such movies got was extremely limited Listeners would not have an opportunity to listen to songs from flop movies as records of such songs would be very rare to find.
Fortunately, someone still had the records of this song, from which he has uploaded this song of “Mohar”. What a great song it is ! Sung by Rafi and Lata, this song must have been picturised on Shammi Kapoor and Geeta Bali (later to become real life man and wife). The song is written by Rajinder Krishan.
It is a superb song, which I have heard for the first time only this moment. And listening to this rare gem has made my morning.

Really ! In 1955, Shammi Kapoor was a nobody, whereas Geeta Bali was a star. I wonder how Shammi managed to get married to her then. Any inside scoops on that ?

He was SHAMMI. How could she resist?
They were in something together (Shammi told me it was Coffee House although that came out later) and then she begged Kedar Sharma to let her play a man’s role in Rangeen Raatein so that she could go on the outdoor shoot with him. They fell in love and got married four months later.

Actually Geeta and Shammi were already married when they made this film (they got married in 1955) 😉
Will just have to hope that this film surfaces some day!
