Babuji dheere chalna pyaar mein zara sambhalna
Posted on: September 4, 2009
Here is one OP Nayyar music that is perhaps the most widely known among present generation, mainly because of its countless remixes. This song is the immortal “Babuji dheere chalna” from “Aar Paar” (1954).
Ironically, this music of O P Nayyar was not an original music, rather it was inspired from western music which already had many versions. Doris Day sang it as “perhaps perhaps” and before her, Nat Cole sang it as “quizas quizas quizas”.
But instead of criticising O P Nayyar for lifting the tune,I would say that he improved the tune and made it much better sounding to Indian ears. I would say that there were several well respected Indian music directors who were inspited from Western music. Some of them improved upon the original music, and some made poor version of the original. Let us just enjoy the songs which were improvements upon the original. “Babuji dheere chalna” certainly sounds like that to me.
And there is no doubt about the originality of Majrooh Sultanpuri’s lyrics or about the refreshing voice of Geeta Dutt.
This song has gone on to become one of the most well known songs composed by O P Nayyar. It is a song that one can enjoy listening to counless times.
This movie had Guru Dutt playing a light hearted role. This movie also had Shyama and Shakeela in it. This song is picturised on Shakeela. (I thank Greta for this information).

Song-Babuji dheere chalna (Aar Paar) (1954) Geeta Dutt, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-O P Nayyar
Lyrics
baabuji dheere chalnaa
pyaar mein zaraa sambhalnaa
haan bade dhokhe hain
bade dhokhe hain is raah mein,
baabuji dheere chalnaa
pyaar mein zaraa sambhalnaa
haan bade dhokhe hain
bade dhokhe hain is raah mein,
baabuji dheere chalnaa
kyun ho khoye huye sar jhukaaye
jaise jaate ho sab kuchh lutaaye
ye to baabuji pahlaa kadam hai
nazar aate hain apane paraaye
haan bade dhokhe hain
bade dhokhe hain is raah mein,
baabuji dheere chalnaa
pyaar mein zaraa sambhalnaa
haan bade dhokhe hain
bade dhokhe hain is raah mein,
baabuji dheere chalnaa
ye muhabbat hai o bhole bhaale
kar na dil ko ghamon ke hawaale
kaam ulafat kaa naazuk bahut hai
aake honthon pe tooenge pyaale
haan bade dhokhe hain
bade dhokhe hain is raah mein,
baabuji dheere chalnaa
pyaar mein zaraa sambhalnaa
haan bade dhokhe hain
bade dhokhe hain is raah mein,
baabuji dheere chalnaa
ho gayi hai kisi se jo anban
thaam le doosraa koyi daaman
zindgaani ki raahen ajab hain
ho akelaa hai to laakho.n hai.n dushman
haan bade dhokhe hain
bade dhokhe hain is raah mein,
baabuji dheere chalnaa
pyaar mein zaraa sambhalnaa
haan bade dhokhe hain
bade dhokhe hain is raah mein,
baabuji dheere chalnaa

This has got to be one of those “childhood” songs…the ones that you know from your childhood without having a clue how you got to know it. Very popular song, I think. Even before the remixes.
I have seen the movie. Good fun, lovely songs.

It seems that Doris Day and Nat King Cole sang their bit in the 60’s, and OP’s composition was in the 50’s wasn’t it? May I have the times wrong.

So many questions today Atul! Shakila dances this tune, I love this song. Love the film actually, it’s a lot of fun.
