Bhay bhanjana vandana sun hamaari

Posted on: September 11, 2009

In Bollywood movies, music directors tended to create songs based on the range and singing ability of the singers. Singers with lesser range and lesser singing abilities got simpler songs to sing, whereas singers with greater skills were often asked to sing difficult songs.

Manna Dey is a singer who has sung most of the difficult songs and it is to his great credit that he sang them so well that such songs continue to delight the aural senses of listeners even today.

Here is a song from “Basant Bahaar” (1956). As we know, “Basant Bahaar” was a musical movie set in the historical times where the hero is a classical singer, so this movies necessarily demanded highly skilled classically trained singing voice. And Manna Dey was the singer who was chosen to sing for the lead actor of the movie, viz Bharat Bhooshan. And it must be said that Manna Dey did a grand job.

Here is a song from this movie that goes “Bhay bhanjana vandana sun hamaari”. This song appears simple, as long as you are a listener. But just try to sing this song, and then one can realise what a difficult song it is to sing. So Manna Dey deserves great kudos for making this song look ridiculously easy.

Shailendra wrote this song and Shankar Jaikishan composed the music. This song is a great delight to listen to.

Lyrics

aaa aaa aaa aaa
bhay bhanjana vandana sun hamaari
bhay bhanjana vandana sun hamaari
daras tere maange ye tera pujaari
bhay bhanjana

geeton ke phoolon ki maala banaakar
geeton ke phoolon ki maala banaakar
laaya hoon dil aarti me sajaakar
ye saanson ki sargam karoon tere arpan
aaa aaa aaa
tujhe aur kya doon main thahra bhikaari
tujhe aur kya doon main thahra bhikaari
daras tere maange ye tera pujaari
bhay bhanjana

aaja madhur swapn si muskuraati
aaja madhur swapn si muskuraati
man ke bujhe deep hans kar jalaati
jape dil ki dhadkan tera naam hardam
aaa aaaa
bhay aur tyaag me main thahra shikaai
tujhe aur kya doon main thahra bhikaari

utar jyot kirnon ki le kar sawaari
utar jyot kirnon ki le kar sawaari
daras tere maange ye teraa pujaari
bhay bhanjana vandana sun hamaari
bhay bhanjana

gagan phalak main palak pasaaroon
ek jhalak dikhlaajaa
mujhpe barad kar
ek pal hans jo bhi bhaar barsaa jaa
meri laaj tere haath jai de
aaa

Basant Bahar is the best effort of Shankar Jaikishan musically. It has depth of the masters and popularity touch of SJ. No RK film can even come close to this one.

Raj Kapoor or Shammi Kapoor seem to have taken the credit for these masters who deserve as much publicity today as they did in their heydays. They were also behind the success of the Jubilee Kumar.

Thank you for your wonderful article on “Bhay Bhanjana.” While your article correctly identifies the film as “Basant Bahar,” the caption below the video frame erroneously says “Baiju Bawara.”

Thanks for pointing out the error.

this film was great in late fifty. one of the finest film ;actor of low caliber but suitable in ‘gayaki , bhajnik ,pujari’ role is bharat bhushan, very weil sutable . he did wonder during his hey days .and what to say about mannadeji. finest in all respect of sur. very very difficult to sing those days and even today also. very few, probably not single singer can sing like mannadeji. and marvellous sangeet by shankar jaikisan.
