Pahla pahla pyaar ka ishaara kaho ji dekha hai kabhi

I thought that Shammi Kapoor and Vyjyantimala acted together for the first time only towards the fag end of their careers, viz in late 1960s, but now I find that they had acted together in their heydays as well. Yes, they acted together in “College Girl” (1960).
Here is a tonga song from this obscure movie. This song is sung by Rafi and Lata and it is picturised on the lead pair, who ride this tonga and sing this duet.
Rajinder Krishan has written this song and Shankar Jaikishan are the music directors.
It is a lovely song that has unfortunately been forgotten along with the movie, but it is certainly a treat for the fans of Shammi Kapoor and Vyjyanti Mala.

Shammi is the greatest. He can make a boring scene so exciting with his mannerisms. You don’t even look at the heroine when he is in the frame.
He is such a gift to the world. If anyone feels down, really just watch one of his songs and guaranteed to lift you up and out of your doldrums!

This movie was the first one where Shankar Jaikishan decided to use a lyricist other than Hasrat and Shailendra. The lyricists were not happy about it. And Shailendra expressed his feelings in a song, “Chhotisi yeh duniya, pehchane raaste…”
Shankar and Jaikishan realized that they should stick to their team and did not work with other lyricists until Shailendra’s death. They even refused to sign a film called Waqt with BR Chopra who used to prefer Sahir Ludhianvi. At that point, SJ commanded higher fees than the highest paid actors of that era including Rajendra Kumar, Shammi Kapoor, Dev Anand. Waqt started the trend of multi starrers with Sunil Dutt, Raaj Kumar, Sadhana, Balraj Sahni, Shashi Kapoor, Sharmila Tagore acting in it. Ravi compose two good songs for that one, “Ai meri zohrazabeen…” and “aage bhi…” but the rest of the songs were mediocre.
Shailendra also chose SJ to compose music for his own film, Teesri Kasam” Though a lyricist himself, he was also gracious enough to let Hasrat Jaipuri pen a couple of songs.

Yes, Shankar Jaikishan asking Rajinder Krishan to write lyrics for them is certainly rare. I was not aware that Shailendra took excetpion to that. I am a big fan of Shailendra as a lyricist, but I feel that Rajinder Krishan was also a superb lyricist as his lyricvs with other music directors ( Madan Mohan, for instance) demonstrates.
This song, and this movie indeed is a trivia buff’s delight.
