O duniyaa ke rakhwaale sun dard bhare mere naale

Posted on: September 18, 2009

I have been posting songs of “Baiju Baawraa” (1952) these days. Every song that I post is a masterclass, and never fails to enthrall, even if I may have heard the song many times in the past.

This song “O duniya ke rakhwaale” is very much a song like this. Now a days, we take the lyrics of this song for granted, but just think of those days when this movie and its songs were not yet created. The lyrics are original, and the words that are used in this song were not used in Bollywood movie song before that. In that respects, this song must be regarded as a pathbreaking song.

This song is very difficult to sing as far as mortals are concerned. Maintaining such high pitch that Rafi effortlessly maintains in this song is simply unbelievable. And when one thiks that maintaining such high pitch is superhuman, Rafi raises the bar even higher towards the end of the song. Breathtaking stuff really, which takes th breath of the listeners away.

And Naushad, the music director of this song, must have devoted so much time and effort and thought to come up with the music of this movie. Every song sounds fresh even today, some 57 years after they were released. And this song sounds as if it was recorded just the other day. This song is simply unbelievable.

Rafi helped many actors get popular thanks to his voice, and here the beneficiery of his voice is Bharat Bhooshan. In this movie, Bharat Bhooshan got to lip sync some amazing compositions which have gone on to become immortal and timeless classics. And there is no doubt in anyone’s mind that this song is an iconic son among iconic song, and the immortality of this song is assured.

Song-O duniya ke rakhwaale (Baiju Baawra) (1952) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Shakeel Badayuni, MD-Naushad

Lyrics

Bhagwaan
Bhagwaan
Bhagwaan
o duniyaa ke rakhwaale,
sun dard bhare mere naale
sun dard bhare mere naale
aash niraash ke do rangon se,
duniyaa toone sajaayi
nayyaa sang toofaan banaayaa,
milan ke saath judaayi
jaa dekh liyaa harjaayi
o lut gayi mere pyaar ki nagri,
ab to neer bahaa le
ab to neer bahaa le
o
ab to neer bahaa le,
o duniyaa ke rakhwaale,
sun dard bhare mere naale
sun dard bhare mere naale

aag bani saawan ki barsaa,
phool bane angaare
naagan ban gayi raat suhaani
patthar ban gaye taare
sab toot chuke hain sahaare,
o jeewan apnaa waapas le le
jeewan dene waale,
o duniyaa ke rakhwaale

chaand ko dhoondhhe paagal sooraj,
shaam ko dhoondhe saweraa
main bhi dhoondhoon us preetam ko,
ho naa sakaa jo meraa
Bhagwaan bhalaa ho teraa,
o kismat phooti aas na tooti
paanv mein pad gaye chhaale,
o duniyaa ke rakhwaale

aaa
aaa
aaa
mahal udaas aur galiyaan sooni,
chup-chup hain deewaaren
dil kyaa ujdaa duniyaa ujdi
rooth gayi hain bahaaren
ham jeewan kaise guzaaren,
o mandir girtaa phir ban jaataa
dil ko kaun sambhaale,
o duniyaa ke rakhwaale
sun dard bhare mere naale
sun dard bhare mere naale
o duniyaa ke rakhwaale
rakhwaale
rakhwaale
rakhwaale
rakhwaale

Every time I listen to this song, it brings tears to my eyes! I just admire the three geniuses who brought this song to us – Shakeel Badayuni, Naushad, and Rafi. It takes great minds to have this effect on the listener. Thanks for this wonderful song, Atul!

Another song which has this same effect on me is from Basant Bahar – Badi der bhayi badi der bhayi, kab loge khabar more raam …, also by Rafi. It is a pity that this genius is no longer in our midst, as also the music directors who brought these classics to us.

Harimadhavanji,
You are always lucky as long as there is a You Tube. Here are two links for you. The 1st one has a good sound, but only the song (whole song). The 2nd link has some xtra dialogues, but too much echo. Enjoy the song.

Thanks Nahmji for reminding this song/program. I remember watching this program on Bombay Doordarshan. Then I was not aware what I am watching! It was like TV pe jo bhi aaya, dekh liya. My brother, a big fan of Rafi was enjoying, praising each and every song of that program. I remember at least one more song during this program – suhani raat dhal chuki…..There were few more songs in that program. Let me see if I can find it.

Just noticed that Arunji already have posted that clip on Feb 1, 2013. Last few days I was away from this site, so might have missed it.
