When I watched the name of the movie and then the first line of the lyrics, it did not ring any bell. But when I listened to the song, it brought back a whole string of memories.
It is a qawwali, and it is in fact one of those immortal qawwalis that one listened to a lot without being aware of any details. I was not at all aware which movie this qawwali was from, but this qawwali was one of the most well known qawwalis of all times- in the same league as “hamen to loot liyaa milke husn waalon ne” , “ye ishq ishq hai”,”nigaahen milaane ko jee chaahta hai”, etc
If one looks at the list of the most popular qawwalis of all times, one realises that quite a few of these qawwalis are composed by Roshan. In fact, there have been so many such qawwalis that one can with justification call Roshan the king of qawwalis.
This movie “Baabar” (1960) is an obscure movie but for this qawwali. And what a superb qawwali ! Sahir Ludhianvi must have spent some quality time thinking about the lyrics of this song. And the effect shows. Every word of the qawwali is meaningful. This qawwali is sung by Rafi, Manna Dey, Asha Bhonsle and Sudha Malhotra.
With so many talented people involved in creating this qawwali, this qawwali has deservingly gone into the hall of fame of immortal qawwalis.
Going by the picturisation, the movie itself was no big deal and this qawwali is picturised on some bit actors whose faces are somewhat familiar but I am no aware of their names. May be one of the knowledgeable readers will come up with the necessary information about their names.

agar ham na hote
agar ham na hote
agar ham na hote
agar ham na hote
muhabbat se tum log
Heard this one after long time. Other songs from same movie is also very good:
“salaam-e-hasrat qubool kar lo”
“payam-e-ishq mohabbat hamen pasand nahin”
And, “King of Qawwalis” Roshan had excellent understanding with “king of Kalam” Sahir. Together, they came up with some excellent qawwalis:
Dil Hi To Hai – Parda uth ke salaam
Dil Hi To Hai – Nigahen milane ko
barsaat Ki raat – naa to carvan ki talaash
barsaat Ki raat – Nigaahein Naaz Ki Maaron Ka Haa
barsaat Ki raat – Pehchhan ta Huun Khoob Tumhare Nazar Ko
barsaat Ki raat – ye ishq ishq ishq
Tajmahal – chandi ka badan
Going back to Sahir/Sudha:
Sahir did a lot to promote to Sudha malhotra. Even got her to compose music (for movie Didi) when N Datta fell ill. People say she gave away under family pressure. And, when Sahir saw newly wed Sudha (to someone else) in a party, he penned the immortal song “Chalo ek baar phir se ajnabi ban jayeen hum dono” .
Very nice qawali! I haven’t heard it in so many years, and yet when I saw the lyrics, I immediately remembered the song, so it has definitely left a lasting impression. Thanks, Atul!
Lip syncing on Manna Dey’s voice is Raj Kishore, ‘Jane kahan gayi’ fame of ‘Dil Apna Aur Preet Parayi’. Also seen as one of the group member of Kishore Kumar’s mandali in ‘Padosan’.
