Though most songs in Bollywood movies are based on desi values, there are “westernised” songs in Bollywood as well. They are mainly songs which are sung in clubs/ parties, and are often accompanied by dance, either by someone like Helen, or a party dance where several people are seen dancing “phoren” style.
Some of the songs where one female sings the song and others dance on it in a gathering have become very well known. Who can forget the “Waqt” (1965) song “aage bhi jaane na tu peeche bhi jaane na tu jo bhi hai bas yahi ek pal hai “.
Here is a song from the same genre which predates the “waqt” song by full one decade. This song is from “Mr and Mrs 55” (1955). This song is sung by Geeta Dutt. With some painstaking research, I realised that the actress lipsyncing the song on screen is Cuckoo.
The song is written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and music is by O P Nayyar. In this song one can see Guru Dutt also, though the heroine of this movie, Madhubala is conspicuous by her absence.

I adore this song sung with such panache by Geeta Dutt. One of my top favorites. I was so struck by it while watching Mr. and Mrs. 55. Cuckoo does and amazing job of lip synching as a crooner this song. The little aankh michoni going on between Guru Dutt and Madhubala is so cute.
Just when Geeta Dutt sings – bujhoo to ye naina babu – the camera zooms on Madhubala stealing looks at Guru Dutt. Absolutely captivating.
