Koyi jab raah na paaye
Posted on: January 8, 2010
I have posted as many as four songs from “Dosti” (1964). There were six songs in this movie as far as I remember. Who knows, there may have been more songs in it that I am not aware or which may have been excluded from the movie.
Here is another song from this movie. This song, like most other songs is sung by Rafi. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist and Laxmikant Pyarelal composed the music. And like every other song from this movie, this song too has gone on to become an immortal timeless song.

Song-Koyi jab raah naa paaye (Dosti) (1964) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal
Lyrics
koyi jab raah na paaye,
mere sang aaye
ke pag pag deep jalaaye,
meri dosti meraa pyaar
meri dosti meraa pyaar
koyi jab raah na paaye,
mere sang aaye
ke pag pag deep jalaaye,
meri dosti meraa pyaar
meri dosti meraa pyaar
jeewan kaa yahi hai dastoor
pyaar binaa akelaa majboor
dosti ko maane to sab dukh door
dosti ko maane to sab dukh door
koyi kaahe thokar khaaye,
mere sang aaye
ke pag pag deep jalaaye,
meri dosti meraa pyaar
meri dosti meraa pyaar
donon ke hain roop hazaar
par meri sune jo sansaar
dosti hai bhaayi to bahnaa hai pyaar
dosti hai bhaayi to bahnaa hai pyaar
koyi mat nain churaaye,
mere sang aaye
ke pag pag deep jalaaye,
meri dosti meraa pyaar
meri dosti meraa pyaar
pyaar kaa hai pyaar hi naam
kahin Meeraa kahin Ghanshyaam
dosti kaa yaaron nahin koyi dhaam
dosti kaa yaaron nahin koyi dhaam
koyi kahin door naa jaaye,
mere sang aaye
ke pag pag deep jalaaye,
meri dosti meraa pyaar
meri dosti meraa pyaar
pyaar kaa hai pyaar hi naam
kahin Meeraa kahin Ghanshyaam
dosti kaa yaaron nahin koyi dhaam
dosti kaa yaaron nahin koyi dhaam
koyi kahin door naa jaaye,
mere sang aaye
ke pag pag deep jalaaye,
meri dosti meraa pyaar
meri dosti meraa pyaar
koyi kahin door naa jaaye,
mere sang aaye
ke pag pag deep jalaaye,
meri dosti meraa pyaar
meri dosti meraa pyaar

I have special memories with this song. I Remember when I was a kid my Dad bought Grundig radiogram and the first LP he bought was of Dosti and this song was the first to be played on that Radiogram. We still have that Radiogram but regretfully not in working condition.

Dosti got the Filmfare award for best music beating Sangam, I think it was a great decision.

The songs of Sangam are good, but pale in comparison to Lakshmikant Pyarelal’s compositions from Dosti. Rafi sahab’s divine voice, Mahrooh sahab’s priceless compositions and LP’s great score have made the songs from Dosti immortal. We will never get music composers like LP, singers like Rafi sahab and lyricists like Majrooh ever again. I get tears in my eyes whenever I listen to Rafi sahab’s divine voice in the songs of this movie. These gems never fail to move me
