Barkhaa ki raaton mein dil jalta jalta jalta hai

“Shrimatiji” (1952) is a movie that was different from the usual Bollywood movies. Its storyline was not Indian, rather that was drawn from external sources. And it is interesting to find stereotypical depiction of exotic people in this movie and its songs.
Here is a song from this movie. It is sung by Asha Bhonsle. It is picturised as an exotic dance song by female dancers dressed in what I suppose is tribal dress as interpreted by the makers of this movie. Their dance steps are just as exotic.
Interestingly, the lyricist is Raja Mehdi Ali Khan. S Mohinder is the music director. Listening to the music, I feel that the music sounds quite modern and it could well have been far far ahead of its time when this music was composed in 1952.
So here is this interesting song from “Shrimatiji”.

Lyrics
ho ha ho ha ha ha ho ho
ho ha ho ha ha ha ho ho
ho ha ho ha ha ha ho ho
barkha ki raaton mein
dil jalta jalta jalta hai
barkha ki raaton mein
dil jalta jalta jalta hai
dil jalta jalta jalta hai
deepak kisi ne mere
deepak kisi ne mere
pyaar ka bujhaa diyaa
pahle hansaaya phir rulaa diyaa
rulaa diyaa rulaa rulaa
pahle hansaaya phir rulaa diyaa
aankhon
aankhon se aansuon ka
dariyaa chalta chalta chalta hai
dariyaa chalta chalta chalta hai
barkha ki raaton mein
dil jalta jalta jalta hai
dil jalta jalta jalta hai
ghane ghane junglon mein
ghane ghane junglon mein
geet mere roye re
dukh mere jaage bhaag soye re
soye re soye re
dukh mere jaage bhaag soye re
aahen
aahen bharte bharte
din dhalta dhalta dhalta hai
din dhalta dhalta dhalta hai
barkha ki raaton mein
dil jalta jalta jalta hai
dil jalta jalta jalta hai
shikwa nahin hai tujhpe
shikwa nahin hai tujhpe
aur na zamaane pe
bigdi banegi na banaane se
banaane se banaane se
bigdi banegi na banaane se
likhaa
likhaa kismat ka
nahin talta talta talta hai
nahin talta talta talta hai
barkha ki raaton mein
dil jalta jalta jalta hai
dil jalta jalta jalta hai
barkha ki raaton mein
dil jalta jalta jalta hai
dil jalta jalta jalta hai

I remember seeing Shrimatiji. The heroine is Shyama. I am not sure of the male. Dance has been well organised and the steps are fantastic.
Music directory were S Mohinder and Jimmy if I am right.
But Shyama was a heart throb of many in those times

I have never heard this song but quite liked it when I heard it now. As for the picturisation, it looks to me to be a South Pacific / Burma / Japanese type setting. This was 1952 – this could be a movie with a bit of the storyline borrowed from WW2 impressions.

This movie and songs has borrowed from eclectic sources. The dance towards the end of the song (where two girls dance timimg their steps with a pair of bamboo sticks alternately being brought together and spread where the feet of the dancers are) is from North Eastern parts of India. I have seen this dance being performed in a cultural programme in Assam.
