Ham tum gum sum raat milan ki

Posted on: May 10, 2010

This is one of those songs that I liked a lot in my younger days without having any inkling about the details of the song, and after some time, such songs would be forgotten by one and all for all time to come.

I have stumbled upon many such great forgotten songs from those days, after I began this blog. And coming across so many childhood favourites is a priceless experience that cannot be properly described in words. It is like meeting your childhood friends after four decades or more.

This song “ham tum gum sum raat milan ki” was quite a popular song in its days. It was sung by Kishore Kumar, the reigning male singing superstar, and obviously my favourite. And that is just about all the information that I possessed about this song at that time.

Now I have come to know that this song was from “Hamshakal” (1974). This movie was Rajesh Khanna movie from his superstar days, and that makes this movie a rare movie which flopped.

Movie may have flopped, but the music was not, considering that I remembered this song , as well as other songs from this movie. Yes, this movie had other great songs too, and I have in fact posted two other great songs from this movie already, viz. Kaahe ko bulaaya mujhe baalmaa pyaar ke naam se (Hamshakal) and Rasta dekhe tera vyaakul (Hamshakal)

Here is this great song from my younger days. It is picturised on Rajesh Khanna and Mausami Chatterji. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist and R d Burman composed the music.

PS-All these days I thought that this song was sung by Kishore Kumar alone, but now I realise that it was a duet and Asha Bhonsle too had sung this song.

I love this song! The rhythm is so typical of Pancham!
But somehow I don’t like the picturisation. This happens to most of Pancham’ songs

I remember hearing this song too. But this must be the first time I am hearing it since the 70s. The “jhumna jhumna” refrain goes very well with the fishing village ambiance.
