Gham ki andheri raat mein

on:This song is a wonderful example of the fact that Bollywood those days possessed an embarrassment of riches in music. Besides the big name music directors, there were music directors on the fringes who were capable of creating great music as well. C Arjun was one of the lesser names from those days, who was mostly confined to working in low budget movies. But he has still given us some very memorable songs.
Here is a song composed by C Arjun that I was just not aware of. And this song comes as a pleasant surprise. This song is a superb ghazal that is sung by Rafi and Talat Mehmood. The song is written by Jaan Nissar Akhtar.
This gem of a composition is from an obscure movie called “Sushilaa” (1966). There is hardly any information avalable about this movie, but what music this movie contained ! Considering that this song came in 1966, this has to be one the last songs sung by Talat Mehmood for a movie. 1966 was a time when old order was about to change giving way to the new, and this song is very much a song of the old order.
Song-Gham ki andheri raat mein (Sushilaa) (1966) Singers-Rafi,Talat Mehmood, Lyrics-Jaan Nissar Akhtar, MD-C Arjun
Lyrics
gham ki andheri raat mein
dil ko na beqaraar kar
subah zaroor aayegi
subah ka intazaar kar
gham ki andheri raat mein
dard hai saari zindagi
jiskaa koi silaa nahin
dil ko fareb deejiye
aur ye hauslaa nahin
aur ye hauslaa nahin
khud se to badgumaan na ho
khud pe to aitbaar kar
subah zaroor aayegi
subah ka intazaar kar
gham ki andheri raat mein
khud hi tadap ke rah gaye
dil ki sadaa se kyaa milaa
aag se khelte rahe
ham ko wafaa se kyaa milaa
ham ko wafaa se kyaa milaa
dil ki lagi bujhaa na de
dil ki lagi se pyaar kar
subah zaroor aayegi
subah ka intazaar kar
gham ki andheri raat mein
jisse na dil bahal sake
aisi khabar se faaydaa
raat abhi dhali kahaan
aabe shahar se faaydaa
aabe shahar se faaydaa
fasle bahaar aayegi
daur e khizaan guzaar kar
subah zaroor aayegi
subah ka intazaar kar
gham ki andheri raat mein
dil ko na beqaraar kar
subah zaroor aayegi
subah ka intazaar kar
gham ki andheri raat mein

With opolgies to Mr. Atul. I cannot stop myself from correcting the lyrics.

Rafi-Talat came together in Naushad’s Aadmi but the version used in the film was that of Mahendra Kapoor and Rafi instead becuase Talat was no longer considered a saleable singer by the distributors at the box office in 1968. Luckily the audio is available for both versions..

Did any one noticed that Rafi is singing with low pitch and Talat sahab with high pitch.

Prakashji,
I am also curious about the star cast of this movie. The only little info I could find is that the movie was made under the banner of Shri Vinayak Chitra and the director was Mahendra Pran who has other movies like Jallianwala Bagh (1987) Subah Zaroor Aayegi (1977) Aaj Ka yeh Ghar (1976) in his name. Arunji will be the right person to correct this info if wrong and give us other details.

Khyaati ji, Prakash ji,
Arun ji was in travel for some days; I expect him to be online again probably by tomorrow.
Let me add some information about this film. ‘Sushilaa’ has a chequered history. Most likely, the film was launched in 1962 / 63, under the banner of Shri Vinayak Chitra, Bombay, and direction by Mahendra Pran (this information is already posted by Khyaati ji). Music composition assigned to C Arjun and lyrics by Jaan Nisaar ‘Akhtar’ and Indeevar. The film has 7 songs, of which only one is penned by Indeevar, and the remaining are written by Jaan Nissar ‘Akhtar’. The music of this film was released in 1963. After some delays, the film was finally certified in 1966, and probably released. I use the word probably, because not much other information, including the star cast, is available for this film.
One does not hear anything more about this film, till 1977. In 1977, a film is released with the title, ‘Subah Zaroor Aayegi’. The production banner for this film is Shri Devi Films, Karnataka, and the direction credits are listed as Mahendra Pran and Dutta Chauhan. The curious thing about this film is that the music director is C Arjun, and lyrics are written by Jaan Nissar ‘Akhtar’ and Indeevar. Further, the list of songs is exactly the same as the 1966 film ‘Sushilaa’. The names of lyricists and singers for each song match exactly with those from the earlier film. Furhter digging, I find a note in Geet Kosh, which says that the film ‘Subah Zaroor Aayegi’ “appears to be” a slightly edited version of ‘Sushilaa’, realesed under a new name and a new certificate. The star cast of ‘Subah Zaroor Aayegi’ is available – Aashoo, Mahesh Raj, Prabhakar, Moolchand, Kumar,Sandeep, Uma Khosla, Ram Kumar, Jeet, Dubey, Harman, Sinha, Ferozaa, Sheela, Shabana, K Raghunath, Shobha, Dilip Dutt, Krishan Duggal, Lal Bahadur etc. The names in this list seem cryptic and not much familiar.
So I too request Arun ji, to please add more information about these two films.

Sudhirji,
Appreciate your input. Now I can connect few things. As why “Subah Zaroor Aayegi” (may be a remake of the Sushilaa) has a same crew of the older version, Sushilaa. The Cast list is like a “New language” for me. I am not familiar with any one of them. Let’s wait till Arunji gives his input. Thanks again.

One hopeful, and another in despair. Naturally Rafi Saab is hopeful that “subah zaroor aayegi” and Talat Saab countering “hamko wafa se kyaa milaa.” Superb lyric by Jan Nisar Akhtar like only he could write. I have cried whenever I heard this song, such was the impact of this song on me.

so fascinating to read all the info on this beautiful song . Delighted to know that there are other music lovers of the rare songs of the 60s.That was truly the Golden era of Hindi film music . I was 16 years old when i first heard this song . I still love it 50 years later . The rich baritone of Rafi Saab ,the soft silken voice of talat. Glad we belong to this era .

Thank you for this wonderful song, Atul! I love the lyrics, and of course the two singers, in this song, and I have found myself humming this song when times were tough and yes, things did get better, always. I just love the part which goes “… subah zaroor aayegi, subah ka intezar kar…, ” because it is so true. This is definitely an inspirational song. Thanks again!
