Kishore Kumar is mainly associated with light hearted fun songs, though he has sung great songs in all genres including serious songs. It is a well known fact that Kishore Kumar was a natural singer, who had not taken any training in classical music, unlike most other leading singers. In fact,this lack of classical training was often taken to mean by music directors that Kishore Kumar could not sing such songs. I can recall at least one occasion where Manna Dey’s voice was used for Kishore Kumar the actor for a semi classical song situation. 🙂
Here in this movie, it is again a semi classical situation where the hero (Kishore Kumar) sings and the heroine (Jamuna) dances.
This is a lovely semiclassical song and dance. Here Kishore Kumar himself sings the song, and what a delightful singing it is ! Lyricist is Majrooh Sultanpuri, who is mostly associated with lyrics containing heavy dury Urdu words, but here he comes up with appropriate shudhh Hindi/ Sanskrit words like “Kaamini”, “Daamini”,”chapal”, “chanchal” etc. Music is composed by that hugely underestimated music director Chitragupta who was content to stay outside the limelight and give A grade music in B grade movies.He would not go and meet A grade movie makers and that is why he missed out becoming a music director in bigger banner movies. But the music that he has created in small budget movies for lesser banners is enough to make him an outstanding music director in my eyes. And this song is a shining example of his class.
I thank Lalitha for the farmaish of this song. I have listened to this song in the past, but this time I got the opportunity to listen to this song closely and it was a hugely rewarding experience. I am sure everyone will love listening to this superb song from “Ek Raaz” (1963).

Thanks for the song, Atul! It was a visual treat also, and of course an audio treat. I do hope Chitragupta made enough money out of these movies to lead a comfortable life.
Chhin is the dialectical (Bhojpuri?) version of the Sanskrit word “KshaN”, so pal chhin literally means a minute or a second, but generally, a brief while.

yes, Chitragupta made enough money to lead a comfortable life. His sons Anand-Milind also went on to become music directors in late 1980s.

This is the third time I came across this term “pal-chhin”, in these songs.
What “exactly” does it mean? “for a while”?
With Jamuna in the movie, it must be a South Indian production. Jamuna acteed mainly in Telugu films. I wonder what this was a remake of. (For example, Milan was originally a Telugu movie, (“mooga-manasulu”) which was highly successful, and was remade in HIndi. Jamuna stayed in that role, with Nutan & Sunil Dutt replacing Savitri and Nageswara Rao.

Pal= a small period of time (a moment)
Chhin is kshan= sanskrit for a moment
pal- chhin basically means a small period of time.
