Ae ri main to prem deewaani mera dard naa jaane koye

Posted on: July 16, 2010

“Naubahaar” (1952) is a movie starring Ashok Kumar and Nalini Jaiwant. This movie was a musical block buster. I have posted a couple of songs from this movie in the past, and I need to post more songs from this movie.

Here is another song from this movie. This song “Ae ri main to prem deewaani” is a traditional Meera Bhajan which is adapted as a lyrics by Shailendra Satyendra Athaiyya. It is sung by Lata and it is picturised on Nalini Jaiwant and Ashok Kumar. Roshan is the music director.

This song has in fact gone on to become a Meera Bhajan and many people may not be aware of this song being a movie song.

The song has two parts, viz Part I and part II. Full lyrics of the song are provided by Mr Sadanand Kamath.

Version-2 (Slow and Sad)
——————————–

din dooba taare murjhaaye
sisak sisak gayi rain
din dooba taare murjhaaye
sisak sisak gayi rain

jhar jhar barsat nain
duniya ke sab sapne jaage
bhaag hamaara soye
o bedardi jeewan baaki
pal pal byaakul hoye
ae ri main to prem deewaani
meraa dard na jaane koye
ae ri main to prem deewaani

mero manmohan aayo na sakhi ri
ro ro naina khoye
ghaayal ki gati ghaayal jaane

ae ri main to prem deewaani
meraa dard na jaane koye
ae ri main to prem deewaani
meraa dard na jaane koye

My 78 rpm record has credited lyrics for this Meera bhajan by Satyendra Atthaiya.

Kamath ji,
The lyrics of Meera bhajan as shown above( and may be on the 78 rpm disc you have-pl.check) are actually not the original Meera Bhajans, but only the first 2 lines are Meera’s.The rest is by Shailendra(and may be by Satyendra Atthaiya-pl.check).
The original Meera Bhajan is as follows:
Aye ri main tho prem diwani
mero dard na jaane koyi
Ghayal ki gati ghayal jaane
jo koi ghayal hoy
Johari ki gati johari jaane
ki jin johari hoy………..1
Sooli upar sej hamari
sovan kis vidh ho
gagan mandal pe sej piya ki
kis vidh milna hoy……..2
Dard ke maare ban ban dhoondhoo
vaidh mila nahi koyi
Meera ke prabhusir mite jab
vaid sanvariya hoy……..3
it is very sad that moviemakers take cinematic liberty and present filmi “Meera Bhajans”.
Even ‘Jogan’ song of Geeta Dutt is not the full version.

I forgot to mention that 78 RPM recorded version has two parts and the last time I heard this song on my record player must be sometime in late 80s. I faintly remembered that the second version was slower in tempo than the first one. In the absence of record player at my end, I was not able to know as to whether the second part’s lyrics are different. Fortunately, I could listen to recorded version of both parts in YT and it is indeed different lyrics in second part with some change in tune and tempo. There is also different starting lines in Part 1 of this song. Audio link of both parts is here:

Arun,

Just a gentle reminder. You have not yet changed the name of the lyricist from Sahilendra to Satyendra Athaiya in your write-up.

Sorry to say but…Meera has done this song so others who amended song are irrelevant. I will be grateful if somebody give meaning of “Meera ke prabhu sir mite jab
vaid sanvariya hoy”

Like

sir…actual words are as follows-

“…meera ki prabhu peer meit jab vaid sanwariya hoy”
peer=pida (pain)

means meera’s pain will go only if Krishna meets me as a doctor.

Just noticed some videos of this song

It seems to come at least four times in the film. I remember one more on YouTube. Perhaps one of interest which I have not heard before is Ashoka Kumar playing it on the flute.
