#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # (Birthday celebration of Atulites)
——————————————-——————————
Welcome all to this first post of mine in this New Year 2023.
Once again wishing all a very ‘happy and musical ‘2023’.
Today’s song is a party song and the reason is the celebration of birthday of two Atulites Peevesie’s Mom ji and Pradeep Raghunathan ji. We wish both of them a very happy birthday and a healthy, prosperous, peaceful and ‘entertaining’ 🙂 life (I hope they will like this) ahead.
For today’s occasion I explored many songs particularly looking for ‘birthday song’, ‘saalgirah songs’, ‘nazraana songs’, ‘party songs’ etc. and sticking to the ‘seventies’ I finally selected this song from the movie ‘Anpadh-1978’ which I had come across in recent months.
“Anpadh-1978” was directed by S.M. Sagar for ‘Adhikar International, Bombay’.
S.M. Sagar was also the producer of this movie.
It had Ashok Kumar, Parikshit Sahni, Zarina Wahab, Vijayendra, Brahmachari, Meena T., Master Innu, Preeti Ganguly, Deven Verma, Aruna Irani and others.
Sarika plays the ‘title role’ in this movie.
Asha Parekh, Anwar Hussain, Asit Sen, Kundan, Birbal, Chandrashekhar and Maruti had a friendly appearance in this movie.
Story of this movie was written by R.S. Varma. Screenplay and dialogues of this movie was written by Rafi Ajmeri.
Editing of this movie was done by Waman Rao (should be Waman Rao Bhonsle I think?).
This movie was passed by Censor Board on 03.08.1978.
This movie has five songs – written by Majrooh Sultanpuri (three songs) and Gauhar Kanpuri (one song). Lyricist’s name for one song is not mentioned in HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980). (*However, the titles of the movie clearly mention only two names as lyricists of this movie).
Music for this movie was composed by Hemant Bhonsle.
Here is the list of songs of this movie.
SNo | Song Title | Lyricist | Singer/s | Posted On |
---|---|---|---|---|
01 | Naghme gaao kaliyaan barsaao | Majrooh | Kishore Kumar, chorus | |
02 | Ae ji kaho kya haal hai | Majrooh | Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar | |
03 | Allah miyaan jodi salaamat rakhna | Not mentioned | Asha Bhonsle, Mohd Rafi | |
04 | Ghar ke andar ammi abba | Gauhar Kanpuri | Asha Bhonsle, Mohd Rafi | |
05 | Salaamat raho tum | Majrooh | Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar | 14.10.2013 |
One song from this movie has been posted earlier on the blog on 14.10.2013. Today’s song is the second song from this movie to be posted on the blog.
As mentioned above, today’s song is party song (and not exactly a birthday song) sung by Kishore Kumar.
On screen, Vijayendra and Brahmachari are seenlip syncing the song in Kishore Kumar’s voice. Also present in the picturisation of the song are Parikshit Sahni (who plays a doctor in this movie and this party is being organised in his honor for a successful critical operation that he has carried out), Zarina Wahab, Preeti Ganguly, Ashok Kumar and many others.
Let us now listen to today’s song and wish Peevesie’s Mom ji and Pradeep ji a very happy birthday today.

Hullo Atuldom
Todays’ song is from a forgotten movie of the late 1970s “Bagula Bhagat” (1979). It was directed by Harmesh Malhotra and produced by Gullu Sippy. It had a cast of Ashok Kumar, Shatrughan Sinha, Shabana Azmi, Kamini Kaushal, Padma Khanna, Mehmood Jr. etc. I think I saw a short video of the movie online somewhere and think I spied Anwar Hussain and Goga Kapoor as his henchman. It had music by Kalyanji Anandji and songs written by Anjaan. Kishore Kumar, Mahendra Kapoor, Amit Kumar and Asha Bhonsle as playback singers. The movie was written by Subhash Ghai and Bhalla.
I have no clue about the story of the movie, date of release etc. I landed on this movie in my quest for a song lip-synced by Ashok Kumar and sung by Kishore Kumar. I found the video of the movie on YouTube which is uploaded in three parts. It begins with a convict’s failed attempt at jumping a prison. Shatrughan Sinha plays a smart-alec who does small odd jobs of helping smugglers transport their illicit stuff for small remunerations. He is assigned a task by Anwar Hussain to help someone escape from prison.
The song with this post is when Shatru lands in prison to finish the assignment given and sees Ashok Kumar being hailed as a prisoner who is well known amongst inmates. Kishore Kumar is the voice for his brother Ashok Kumar and Amit Kumar sings for Shatru.
The song reminds of ‘do bechaare bina sahare’, from Victoria No. 203. There was a period in the 70s when we had many such Kishore Kumar- Ashok Kumar songs meaning Kishoreda singing for Dada Moni. And my hope is that we don’t run out of such songs as they are best to remember the brothers on their anniversaries. 13th October is Dada Moni Ashok Kumar’s birth anniversay and Kishoreda’s death anniversary. This pair of brothers have been responsible for entertaining audiences from the 30s when Dada Moni stepped into Bombay Talkies as lab assistant. And after a few years he stepped in front of the camera it is a different matter that he had not hankered after that career. He was busy in front of the screen for almost six decades.
Kishoreda, Dada Moni’s youngest brother, began his career as a chorus singer at Bombay Talkies and got his first independent break in 1948 with “Ziddi”. His first screen appearance may have been in 1946 “Shikari” which starred his older brother but he played the lead for the first time in 1951. He has more discography to his name compared to filmography. But this was one entertaining family where their sister was married to a producer, their other brother was also an actor. Amit Kumar followed his dad of being a singer/actor and Preethi Ganguly also went on to become an actor. Dada Moni’s granddaughter is actress Anuradha Patel, son-in-law was Deven Verma. So much talent in one family.
Thinking of the Ganguly brothers Ashok Kumar and Kishore Kumar .

Hullo Atuldom
Navratri. Nine nights of festivities. Celebrated through the country in honour of Devi Maa, Maa Durga, or the Holy Trinity of Durga Lakshmi Saraswati. Also Rama’s victory over Ravana and rescuing Devi Seeta from Lanka. No wonder the 10th day of the festival is called Vijaya Dashami.
I have got a Whatsapp forward which gives a perspective of the day as ” Dussehra is a Sanskrit word which means removal of Ten Bad Qualities within oneself, namely
Ahankara (Ego),
Amanavta (Cruelty),
Anyaaya (Injustice),
Kama vasana (Lust),
Krodha (Anger),
Lobha (Greed),
Mada (Pride),
Matsara (Jealousy can also mean competition which is a result of jealousy),
Moha (attachment),
Swartha (Selfishness)”;
which means that ‘Vijaya over these Ten Bad Qualities. (I thought that this was a great thought and hence shared it here)
Dussehra marks the culmination of the Ram Leela, at various venues across the country, with the burning of the effigies of Meghnad (son of Ravana), Kumbhakarna (brother of Ravana) and Ravana himself. Dussehra is also the last day of the Durga Puja for the people from Eastern India (wherever in the world they be). The Durga Puja begins on the sixth day of Navartri, when the idols of the goddess is installed along with those of her children Ganesh and Kartik and Devi Laxmi and Devi Saraswati. Dussehra is the day when the idols are immersed in the holy waters of the rivers after morning puja, kumkum khela etc. Festivities in western India too come to a close with all the rituals associated. So we are at the end of one festival waiting for the next -Deepavali.
Let us bring this festival to a close with this all important aarthi which is from “Purab Aur Paschim” (yes, there are some songs from this film yet to be posted). In the film this traditional aarthi plays at the start to set the story of the movie in motion. It shows Ashok Kumar (whose birth anniversary it was two days ago) leading a group of devotees which includes Kamini Kaushal and Nirupa Roy (13th October was her death anniversary). As the song plays, we see the Union Jack being lowered and replaced by the Indian Tricolour. The movie too becomes ‘color’ from ‘black-n-white’. The aarthi is also used to introduce almost all the characters of the movie, we see ‘Bharat’ growing up from Master Alankar to Manoj Kumar and Bharathi (south Indian actress) growing into ‘Gopi’. The movie closes with the aarthi as Saira Banu accepts that she has liked the Indian way of life and her mother Shammi and brother Rajendranath also join the aarthi.
The aarthi is in the voices of Mahendra Kapoor, Brij Bhushan and Shyama Chittar. The music director for the movie were Kalyanji Anandji, who have stuck to the traditional format in here.
Happy Bijoya/ Vijaya Dashami to one and all.

#The Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 130 # Aayegi zaroor chithhi mere naam ki #
——————————————-—-
Today’s song is from the ‘1974’ movie ‘Dulhan’. ‘Dulhan-1974’ is one of those movies which had made its debut in the initial months of this blog, on 02.11.2008 with its song ‘jaane chaman jaane bahaar’. But since then, this movie is waiting to see its second song on the blog. Today after ‘twelve years, five months, and three days (or 4537 days), we are going to listen to the second song from this movie.
I remember the today’s song was frequently heard on radio and loud-speakers in those days i.e., my childhood days 😊. And maybe then I was not aware which movie it was from. But I vaguely remember that I never liked this song then and in fact it was irritating for me whenever it was played on radio or around. However, I think that this song must be the most popular song from this movie. And I was thus surprised to note that this has not been posted on the blog until now.
The other song I am familiar from this movie is ‘Govinda aa Gopaalaa aa, mere rote nainaa poochhen’ which was also frequently played then. And in comparison, to the above two songs, the song jaane chaman jaane bahaar from ‘Dulhan-1974’ is a song I am less familiar with.
‘Dulhan-1974’ was directed by C.V. Rajendran for ‘Sujata International, Madras’. It had Ashok Kumar, Jeetendra, Hema Malini, Jamuna, Mehmood (in special appearance), Nazir Hussain, David, Agha, Paintal, Manorama, Mukesh, Vijay Kumar, Prem Kumar, Raghav, Bhagwan, Baby Doll, Leela, Munni, Asha, Shammi and others.
This movie was passed by Censor Board on 19.10.1974.
This movie had five sound tracks including its ‘title-music’ as mentioned in HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980). HFGK also mentions that one song from this movie i.e., ‘main teri dulhan tu dulha piyaa’ is given in two-parts on the LP record of this movie.
Anand Bakshi was the lyricist for this movie who had written all the songs for this movie. Music for this movie was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal.
As per HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980) this movie ‘Dulhan-1974’ had the following songs;
SNo | Song Title | Singer/s | Posted On |
---|---|---|---|
01 | Aayegi zaroor chithhi mere naam ki | Lata Mangeshkar | Being discussed today |
02 | Jaane chaman jaane bahaar | Kishore Kumar | 02.11.2008 |
03 | Main dulhan teri tu dulha piya | Lata Mangeshkar | |
04 | Jai Hari Govind… Govinda Gopaala | Lata Mangeshkar,Chorus | |
05 | Title music |
— —
I have not watched this movie, so I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs.
Let us listen to the today’s song now.
This song is lip synced on screen by Hema Malini while Jeetendra is also present there.
In the second part the mukhda of this song plays in the background and Ashok Kumar, Hema Malini, Nazir Hussain and many others are also seen in the picturization.

Let us enjoy today’s wonderful song and take this movie closer to ‘Yippeeee’ 😊 i.e., only one step away now.

We in this blog remember the personalities of HFM during their anniversaries. But in case of Ashok Kumar’s birth anniversary, we are constrained to defer it to next day because this day unfortunately turned out to be the death anniversary of Kishore Kumar, his younger brother.
Ashok Kumar (13 October 1911 – 10 December 2001) was easily the first superstar of HFM. He achieved his stardom in early 1940s, at a time when many actors now regarded as superstars had not even made their debuts. For instance, people like Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, Raj Kapoor had not even made their debuts by that time. Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan, future superstars were mere toddlers at that time.
Ashok Kumar began his film career as a lab technician. His rise to superstardom from that position was quite meteoric. Unlike meteors, he stayed on top throughout his career. He was not just a top actor, he was also a film maker. He never had to look for work. He was himself an employer of film actors. Unlike many film personalities who fell on hard times and survived in penury in old age, Ashok Kumar managed his finances well and he was always financially well secured. This is one quality of his that most film personalities needed to learn from.
Ashok Kumar was well connected to lots and lots of other well known film personalities through blood relations as well as marriage alliances. In his own household he had Anup Kumar and Kishore Kumar as his brothers. His sister Sati Rani Devi was married to film producer Shashdhar Mukherjee (founder of Filmalaya), whose brother Subodh Mukherjee was a director. Shashdhar Mukherjee’s sons were Rono Mukherjee, Joy Mukherjee, Deb Mukherjee, Shomu Mukherjee and Shubir Mukherjee, all into films. Shomu Mukherjee’s wife is Tanuja. Their daughter is Kajol.
If one looks at the filmy connections of Ashok Kumar, thanks to Kishore Kumar’s various marriages, it will turn out that Ashok Kumar was related to almost every major star in HFM and beyond. Ashok Kumar is related to Kapoors, Bachchans, Rabindranath Tagore, Mithun Chakraborty etc. Exploring all these connections can be used as an exercise in timepass by those interested. 🙂
Ashok Kumar was an actor-singer during the early parts of his career. Some of his songs have gone on to become immortal songs. Who can forget the immortal “Achhot Kanya”(1937) duet Main ban ki chidiya ban ban doloon re with Devika Rani.
Here is another Ashok Kumar-Devika Rani duet. This song is from “Anjaan”(1941). It is penned by Kavi Pradeep. Music is composed by Pannalal Ghosh.
A very nice retro style romantic song. One would love watching the picturisation.

Hullo Atuldom
Happy festival at the outset.
A festival that goes by various names :- Makara Sankranti (AP, Karnataka, Kerala, Goa, Maharashtra), Pongal (TN & Pondicherry), Lohri (Punjab, Haryana, Delhi), Sakraat & Makraat (Bihar, UP, Uttarakhand), Uttarayan (Gujarat, Diu, Daman), Suggi (in parts of Karnataka), Magh Saaji (HP), Ghughuti – (Kumaon), Makara Chaula (Odhisha), Kicheri (Poorvanchal, East UP), Pousha Sankranti (Bengal and North East), Magh Bihu (Assam), Shishur Sankraat (Kashmir ), etc etc. Outside of the country, in some neighbouring Asian countries to be exact, it is celebrated as Maaghe Sankrast – Nepal, Tirmoori – Sindh Pakistan, Songkran -Thailand , Pi Ms. Lao – Laos, Thingyan – Myanmar, Mohan Songkran – Cambodia etc. Basically we are all celebrating the transition of the Sun across the Equator, on it’s journey from the southern hemisphere to the northern hemisphere.
Each region of India have their own ways of celebrating the event but as I have come to understand there are a few things common to all –Jaggery, til (also called gingelly, or sesame seeds), sugarcane, and freshly harvested ears of corn, wheat or even turmeric (in South India). Then of course the children enjoy themselves with kite flying which takes on the form of competition at times. So let us say Happy Festival. Tamil Nadu has its festivities spread over 3-4 days culminating in what is called Mattu Pongal – celebrated the next day of Sankrant with races with cattle involved. (PETA has tried to bring some order to the extent to which the animals can be made use of, and the conditions in which the races take place).
Last weekend, I was lucky to be asked to join my Chacha and Chachi, to an evening full of OPN songs by a newly formed music group. The members of the group were out to entertain themselves and showcase their talent among their close friends and relatives. The closest anyone of the group had come to anything Bollywood was when the hostess’s father had his ardent fan moment when he came face to face with OP Nayyar sometime in the 70s or 80s. That man was a self taught Harmonica player and encouraged his children and wife to sing along. And the wife and daughter of the (now) deceased man were at the forefront of the group which had female and male singers who sang in their own voices without aping any of the originals and that was a welcome change. The group presented medleys of songs with similar beats- the trade mark tonga-beat songs, and songs dipped in Punjabi folk tunes. The evening began with the song from ‘Sambandh’ – “Chal Akela Chal Akela” and then one song followed the next. The evening climaxed with songs that fell in tune with “Sar Pe Topi Laal Haath Mein Resham Ka Roomal”. In between there was an instrumental rendition of songs from ‘Kashmir ki Kali’, ‘Ek Musafir Ek Haseena’, ‘Kismat’ and ‘Phir Wohi Dil Laaya Hoon’ using the saxophone by Shri Shyam Raj ji who (if I heard right) had been a saxophone player for many of OPN’s songs.
Let me add that we were invited to the evening because my cousin’s husband has taken up singing and joined this group post his retirement. It was a revelation that he sang so well. The first song he sang that evening was “Piya Piya Piya Mora Jiya Pukaare” and “Surma Mera Niraala” was his next. And I must say he “yodels” almost like the Kishore Kumar whose fan he is.
As is my habit (ever since I associated with this blog) the first thing I did on returning home was to look up the anniversary page of our blog and see what was the date of OPN’s anniversaries. Next I checked what songs of OPN are yet to make their appearance on the blog. I found many movies of the 50s & 60s with two or three songs left to attain yyiippeeeehood. Then I began looking up for associated videos on YouTube, these songs are not yet available on YouTube too. In fact only the audio of some songs are available and not the whole movie. So that makes reaching videos difficult. But we cannot let the occasion of remembering OPN go by without a song.
So here it is. A song from the film ‘Raagini’ of 1958. The film is produced by Ashok Kumar, jointly with TS Ganesh, and is directed by Rakhan. This movie had a song which was enacted on screen by Kishore Kumar and playback was by Mohd Rafi. Now I discovered another song, as I was hunting songs for this post, which is again classical raaga based and Ustaad Amaanat Ali Khan and Fateh Ali Khan are the playback singers. On screen we have Padmini performing a classical dance and Kishore Kumar sitting on stage in a classical gaayaki mode and lip-syncing. A very uncharacteristic Kishore and a very uncharacteristic Omkar Prasad Nayyar who was popular as OP Nayyar. The song ends with Padmini matching steps to the brilliant tabla accompaniment.
As I was writing this post I recollected a post by Atul ji where he has mentioned about movies with names of popular actresses of the time but the actresses were not part of the cast of that particular movie, e.g. ‘Kalpana’ (1960) didn’t have Kalpana as heroine. An this film, ‘Raagini’ has Padmini as the heroine; Raagini the actress was her sister.
Let us enjoy this rare presentation, Kishore Kumar lip syncing a classical song in the voice of Bade Fateh Ali Khan.

Hullo Atuldom
Sometimes a sudden tune or memory or word sends the mind looking for a song or visual connection. So, a few days back it was a tune in my head that sent me looking for today’s song. I remembered, rather vaguely, that the song had Ashok Kumar dancing away merrily. I remember having seen it eons ago on Doordarshan – the one source of most of my nostalgia.
I hunted down the song. I found the name of the movie it was from. Searched for it on YouTube. Enjoyed my first encounter with that movie thoroughly. It has been listed on IMDB.com under “action, crime, drama” genre. It should also have been categorised as “comedy”.
The movie had a huge cast- a set of dancing actresses headed by Shashikala, Aruna Irani, Prema Narayan, Helen, Jayshree T., Meena T. and Shubha Khote & Manorama. The male line up was headed by Ashok Kumar, Ranjeet, Sujit Kumar, Keshto Mukherjee, Asrani, Jagdeep, Viju Khote, Krishan Dhawan, Chandrashekhar, Coca Cola, Pinchoo Kapoor, Birbal, Yusuf Khan (Zabisco from Amar Akbar Anthony), Babban, Pakoda Kader etc. There were a few more known faces which were billed as guest appearance- Amjad Khan, special appearance- Danny and friendly appearance -Mehmood.
There were many movies back then where we had known faces putting in appearances in these categories as a gesture to the maker of the movie. And I think I know why Mehmood did this movie as the maker S. Ramanathan had been a co-director on “Bombay to Goa”.
This movie begins on a night where Ranjeet (one of the serious persons throughout the movie) is hatching a plot to steal diamonds from the vault of Pinchoo Kapoor’s residence in the company of Sujit Kumar (he plays a dead body for half the movie)- that is where the crime angle is. As the plan is being executed Pinchoo Kapoor is shot dead (crime angle again). But he Dials 100 with the help of his pet Pomeranian -that is one intelligent pet which has a good part to play in helping recognize the lost daughters of the family. That is when the ‘drama angle’ comes into play when the pet recognizes one daughter because of her locket, takes her to the bungalow where the loyal servant of the house enquires about the girl whose photo is in the locket. Further family-drama comes into play when it turns out that the girl in possession of the above mentioned locket is also the younger daughter of the family and in the absolute climax of the movie the sisters unite and with the aide of the hero and practically the entire cast catches Ranjeet and hands him over to the cops headed by Krishan Dhawan and Chandrashekhar.
Of course, we have to sit through the movie, from the murder to reach the climax (only place where there is dishoom- dishoom in the movie), through a not-so-boring movie. Danny was a revelation as far as his comic timing was concerned. I will not spell here what transpires through the movie and spoil the fun for anyone who may wish to see this movie.
Today’s song features the tenants of Manorama’s apartment as they gather to wish the newly-engaged hero -heroine (every Bollywood movie worth its name needs a jodi) Vinod Mehra and Bindiya Goswami. Everyone is singing and having the time of their life except Bindiya Goswami. The song is sung by Manna Dey (for all the males present), Asha Bhonsle (for the females) and Bappi Lahiri for Vinod Mehra. Anjaan wrote the song and Bappida was the music director for this S. Ramanathan directed “Dial 100” which released on 2nd April 1982.
Here is the song where Ashok Kumar leads along with Aruna Irani and the rest of those present join. I have always loved songs where Ashok Kumar visibly enjoys himself. Let us also enjoy this song.
Thinking of Dada Moni today on his anniversary.
