Though the video of the song is available, I am quite clueless about the identity of the lady who lip sync this song while Ashok Kumar is seated on a grand piano.

I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the identity of the lip syncer.

Blog Day : 3500 Post No. : 14061

Today is Friday, 16 february 2018. It is just another day. But trust us to find something remarkable even out of seemingly routine matters. Today is a special day for the blog. It is the 3500th day for the blog.

It follows that the blog has seen 34 such occasions in the past as well. But we took notice of such kind of centuries for the first time only last year on 8 november 2017 when it was the 3400th day for the blog.

A quick mental calculation would show that there are 365 days in a year and so ten years have 3650 days (decimal system zindabaad ! 🙂 ). Add two additional days for two leap years. So the blog will turn one decade old or 3652 days old in another 152 days from now, on 19 july 2018 !

Another quick mental calculation would reveal that 3500 x 4= 14000. The blog has 14060 songs posts as of now. So it turns out that the blog is going on at a strike rate of just over four songs a day for 3500 days !

When a blog lasts this long and adds so many articles to it, then one is able to reel off quite a few statistics associated with it. I find that the blog by now has songs from as many as 3835 movies. As many as 1080 of these movies have already been YIPPEED ! So we no longer need to search for any additional songs for these 1080 movies because all of them have already been accounted for.

In the process of discussing songs, many artists have completed their own milestones in the blog. 35 music directors, 28 lyricists and 21 singers have more than one hundred songs each in the blog. Some of them in fact have their songs running into thousands in the blog.

There are a few artists who have almost all their songs covered in the blog. All available songs of K L Saigal, Suraiyya and Sajjad Hussain are showcased in the blog. Artists like Naushad, O P Nayyar, S D Burman, Madan Mohan, Talat Mehmood etc have less than 100 songs each left to be covered in the blog.

The blog is a great example of the power of online collaboration of likeminded individuals. All these individuals are making valuable contributions through their articles, lyrics, comments, suggestions etc. Some of these contributors have completed their own centuries in the blog.

The kind of skill sets that our contributors possess for the cause of HFM can be the envy of many professional set ups. We have contributors who are like research scholars and their original researches in the field of HFM have helped add to the information in the field of HFM.

The thing that pleases me most is the fact that we all feel like a group of people close to each other. Some of us have actually met each other and continue to meet each other from time to time. We have got to know each other quite closely and we often share in the joys and sorrow of each other.

I have a feeling that what we have seen so far is just the tip of the iceberg as far as our work in the field of HFM is concerned. The real extent of the iceberg has not yet been revealed. Lots of valuable background information and statistics pertaining to HFM have been collected during this nearly one decade long journey and that information has not yet appeared in the blog.

On the occasion of the blog touching 3500 days, here is a joie de vivre genre of song from “Shatranj” (1956). This song, the sixth out of eight songs from the movie is sung by Asha Bhonsle and chorus. Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist. Music is composed by C Ramchandra.

The song is picturised as a dance song on Sheila Vaz and others. The lead pair of Ashok Kumar and Meena Kumari are also visible in the picturisatoon as spectators.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra. He points out that one line in the audio version differs from the video version. Trust Prakashchandra to be able to differentiate between such fine details. 🙂

“Raakhi” (1962) was produced by Siva H Ganeshan and directed by a Bhimsingh for Prabhuram Pictures, Madras. The movie had Ashok Kumar, Waheeda Rehman, Pradeep Kumar, Mehmood, Ameeta, Malika, Lalita Pawar, Raj Mehra, Randhir, Madan Puri, Shivraj, Mohan Choti, Umesh Sharma etc in it.

This archtypically melodramatic movie had one theme song dedicated to the festival of Rakhi, but other songs from the movie were apparently all wedding songs of different nature- viz from the point of view of the bride, from the point of view of the sister in law etc.

Here is the “baabul ka chhootna” genre of wedding song from “Raakhi” (1962). The song is sung by Lata. Rajinder Krishan is the lyricidt. Music is composed by Ravi. This lyricist-Music director duo have given us several great wedding songs, and this song is one of them.

The song is picturised as a background bidaai song as Waheeda Rehman, after being married off to Pradeep Kumar is deparing in a doli, looked on by Ashok Kumar, playing dulhan ka bhai.

Song-Baabul chhoot chala tera angna (Raakhi)(1962) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-Ravi

Lyrics

Baabul chhoot chala tera angna
Baabul chhoot chala tera angna
le ke chali tan saja sajaaya
chhod chali man apna
Baabul chhoot chala tera angna
Baabul chhoot chala tera angna

haath huye kya peele mere
ho gayi main to paraayi
haath huye kya peele mere
ho gayi main to paraayi
shahnaayi ki goonj mein kho gayi
baabul meri duhaayi
dil bhi mera tab tab dhadke
jab jab khanke kangna
Baabul chhoot chala tera angna
Baabul chhoot chala tera angna
le ke chali tan saja sajaaya
chhod chali man apna
Baabul chhoot chala tera angna
Baabul chhoot chala tera angna

jis angna mein bhaiyya ke sang
bachpan mera khela
jis angna mein bhaiyya ke sang
bachpan mera khela
us angna mein aaj khada hai
bhaiyya mera akela
jaagti aankhon dekh raha hai
mere sukh ka sapna
Baabul chhoot chala tera angna
Baabul chhoot chala tera angna
le ke chali tan saja sajaaya
chhod chali man apna
Baabul chhoot chala tera angna
Baabul chhoot chala tera angna

Here is the fifth and final song from “Do Bhai”(1969) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Rafi. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

HFGK mentions this song as one song, but the it appears twice in the movie. The part I or the “normal” song appears in the movie as the movie opening song. The slow “sad” version of it appears briefly as the movie ending song. The song plays in the background. Part I of the ong, in addition to being the movie opening song is a rail song as well because Ashok Kumar is seen travelling in trains for most part of the song. Likewise, the “movie ending” part of the song can be described as “court room” song because this part is picturised in a courtroom where Ashok Kumar dramatically appears all of a sudden as noble sacrificing characters tend to do in Hindi movies.

With this song, “Do Bhai”(1969) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog. Movies with the same title were made in 1947 and 1961 as well and they have already been YIPPEED in the blog. So, with this song, all movies titled “Do Bhai”, viz. “Do Bhai” (1947), “Do Bhai” (1961) and “Do Bhai” (1969) have been YIPPEED in the blog. 🙂

Blog Day : 3476 Post No. : 13961

Today, 23rd January 2018 is the 121st Birth Anniversary of India’s best known revolutionary- Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. His life story and name is known to every Indian. It is not only very inspiring, but is very motivating as well. Unfortunately Netaji did not get the kind of help or support he needed and deserved for his Military action, from Indian politicians of his times. Netaji’s philosophy clashed with the Non-Violence policy espoused by Gandhi and his Congress Party. He pursued his dream single handedly. It is once in a Century that such a person is born. My respectful obeisance to Netaji.

On this occasion, here is a song describing his life which was nothing but a life of Balidaan or sacrifice.

Today’s song is from film Samadhi-1950. With this song, I remember and pay my respects to Music Director C.Ramchandra, in his Centenary Year.

Indian film industry is notably poor in making Patriotic films. Agreed that the first 16 years of the Talkie in India were not suitable or encouraging for making such films, as India was under British rule. But now, after 70+ years of ibdependence, the number of such films can be counted on the fingers of just one hand. Historical films have suffered the same fate. Our Historical films are based on some fictitious love stories and the history part is limited only to the costumes and Horses,Elephants etc.

No doubt, some film makers did make films based on Patriotic themes, almost immediately after independence or in the first few years after that. Songs with Patriotic themes were also used in few films. Films like Apna Desh-49,Samadhi-50, Pehla Admi-50, Andolan-51 and Anand Math-52 are some such examples, but these are only a few among the heap of song and comedy films that were being produced.Sporadic films like Jagriti-54, Chhatrapati Shivaji (52,61 and 2007) and some films of Manoj Kumar were made combining Patriotic themes in later years. As for “Historical” made those days- Mughal e Azam, Anarkali or Taj Mahal were more of Love story films than Historical films.

On this background, making a film like Samadhi was actually a risk. But this risk was offset by planting a Love story and some foot tapping songs and dances. In this, C.Ramchandra’s contribution was extremely important. The evergreen song ” Gore gore, o banke chhore” by Lata and Amirbai and few more lilting songs by Lata and Shamshad Begum made the film a memorable musical extravaganza. However, care was taken that the Patriotic theme of the movie was not compromised.

It was said that Samadhi’s story was based on a True Life story. The film was directed by Ramesh Saigal (2-3-1918 to 20-1-1980), who directed only 10 films in his career, but what some of his films were ! Shaheed-48, Samadhi-50, Shikast-53, Railway Platform-55 and Phir subah hogi-58 can not be forgotten. Film Samadhi had all the elements in it that make a movie successful. Moreover the film had the background of Indian National Army, led by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, who was loved by people of India. These factors made the film a grand success at the Box Office. By one estimate, film Samadhi-50 was the highest earner on Box Office in 1950. It reportedly made a gross collection of Rs.1,35,00,000 and a net profit of Rs. 75,00,000 (wiki).

The film cast was Ashok Kumar, Nalini Jaywant, Shyam, Mubarak, David, Badri Prashad, Shashi Kapoor Sr., Collins Paul etc etc.

Ashok Kumar and Nalini Jaywant came together for the first time with this film. They then went on to do 11 films together from 1950 to 1966. Together, they even went abroad for shooting of the film Naaz-54 . Their mutual attraction was well known in the industry. But later they parted ways and though their Bungalows in Union Park, Chembur, Bombay were opposite to each others, they did not even exchange greetings.

Actor Shyam (20-2-1920 to 15-4-1951), who was a popular Hero those days, did the role of Ashok Kumar’s elder brother despite being almost 10 years younger to Ashok Kumar. His height and good physique enabled him to look quite convincing as the elder brother of Ashok Kumar.

Shashi Kapoor Sr.(Shashi Chand Kapoor) did the role of young Ashok Kumar. It is interesting to note that the other Shashi kapoor Jr. ( Raj kapoor’s brother) did the young Ashok kumar’s role in film Sangram-50 in the same year

It is also interesting to note that Netaji’s role in this film was done by an actor named Collins. He was like an O.T.P.- never seen again in any film.

The story of this film was given by me earlier for some other post from this film, so I am not repeating it here. Baburao Patel of ” Film India”, wrote in its May-50 issue that the film was ” irrelevant and obsolete politically, since India had got its freedom now.” However the audience and the readers of his magazine did not agree to his comments and made this film a tremendous success. It goes to prove that Patriotic themes are never irrelevant.

Film Samadhi-50 had 7 songs. 5 songs were already discussed on the Blog. Let us enjoy the song by C.Ramchandra, describing Netaji’s life story in essence.

Ed note:- One song is now left to be covered. This balance song is “Sab mil kar Hind pukaaren” according to HFGK whose record was not made and this song is apparently not available.

Lyrics

ho o o o
Netaji ka jeewan hai balidaan ki ek kahaani
Netaji ka jeewan hai balidan ki ek kahaani
balidaan hi balidaan hai
bachpan aur jawaani
bachpan aur jaawani
balidaan ki ek kahaani
balidaan ki ek kahaani

hoye bachpan hi se chanchal man mein armaanon ka mela thha
chhoti si ek lehar thhi dil mein
toofaanon ka rela thha
college mein ustaad jo thha wo thha london ka gora
arre usne kaha college me ek din
hindi kaala log chhichhora

sher bose ka khoon jo khaula
sher bose ka khoon jo khaula
gore ko ik chapat lagai
naam kata college se lekin
hind ki laaj bachaai
Netaji ka jeewan hai balidaan ki ek kahaani
balidaan hi balidaan hai bachpan aur jawaani
balidaan ki ek kahaani
balidaan ki ek kahaani

maat pita ne samjhaaya
aur englishtan ko kiya ravaana
badon ke aage honth na khole
lekin baagi dil na maana
europe mein ICS ke imtihaan ko paas kiya
arre itna ooncha ohda paakar
deshbakht ne chhod diya
phir
hindsutan mein aakar pehle gaandhi ko parnaam kiya
gaandhi ko parnaam kiya
gaandhi ko parnaam kiya

wo desh ki seva ka baapu se pehla pehla sabak liya
pehla pehla sabak liya
pehla pehla sabak liya

bharat ke dukh dard ko socha samjha aur pehchaana
kamar baandh kar rann mein aaya
aazaadi ka deewaana
aazaadi ka deewaana
aazaadi ka deewaana

kiya angrezon ne ye aid
karen is baagi ko ab qaid
kuchal daalen
masal daalen
kuchal daalen
masal daalen

magar
bachpan se jo baagi ho
wo zulm se darna kya jaane
jalne se kab ghabraate hain
shama watan ke parwaane
jiski rag rag mein shole hon
wo kya samjhe chingaari ko
hathkadiyon ko
zanjeeron ko
jailon ki chaar deewaari ko
kadam kadam par mushqil aayi
lekin sher sada lalkaara
rah nahin sakta gair ke bas mein
Hidustan hamaara
rah nahin sakta gair ke bas mein
hidustan hamaara
rah nahin sakta gair ke bas mein
hidustan hamaara

sarkaar ne kar daali nazarband zabaanband
maidaan ke jo mard hain hote hai kahaan band
ek raat ko chupke hi se gum ho gaye Neta
shor hua subah kahaan kho gaye Neta
janta bhi thhi hairaan
to sarkaar bhi hairaan
ud jaane se bulbul ke thha saiyyaad pareshan

lekin
maata ko ye ummeed thhi
laut aayega beta
maata se kahe bina kahaan jaayega beta
is aas mein darwaaje bhi ghar ke na kiya band
aa jaayega
aa jaayega
wo laal wo farjan

us maa se badi maa hai jo hindustan hai
wo chodd gaya maa ko
badi maa ko chudaane
is hind ki bigdi hui taqdeer banaane

badal pathaani bhesh
chala pardes
chhod kar desh
hamaara neta
badal pathaani bhesh
chala pardes
chhod kar desh
hamaara neta
aazadi ki nayi ladaai
ladne pyaaara neta

hindustan se kabul mein
aur kabul se berlin mein
chalte chalte pahunch gaya
wo singapore ke rann mein
qaum ki ye fauj aur qaumi taraana ban gaya
qaum ki ye fauj aur qaumi taraana ban gaya

ek ek tinka chuna
aur aashiyaana ban gaya
jai gandhi jai subhash
jai gandhi jai subhash
jai hind jai hind
jai hind jai hind
jai hind jai hind
jai hind

चाँदनी रातें प्यार की बातें

खो गई जाने कहाँ

That is the very first introduction to this extremely versatile actress of the Hindi cinema. The song was played in the weekly Chitrahaar program one evening. And the kid me was soaking in the performance with an open mouth and extreme ignorance of the emotions being dealt with. The primeval image carried in was that of a serious actress given over to sad roles and sad songs. Little did I know that I couldn’t have more further from reality.

Remembering Geeta Bali, the actress extraordinaire, on the anniversary of her passing away (21st Jan).

Some months or a year later, the film came on to Doordarshan, and then I got another taste of this very song; but in accompaniment I also got to see “Chori Chori Meri Gali Aana Hai Bura” and “De Bhi Chuke Hum Dil Nazraana Dil Ka”. After this encounter, I would get to see more of her in other films aired on Doordarshan – ‘Anand Matth’ (1952), ‘Baawre Nain’ (1950), ‘Baazi’ (1951) etc. Other films would come later – ‘Baaz’ (1953), ‘Albela’ (1951), ‘Badi Behan’ (1949) etc., not essentially in that order.

Through these films, I began to know her much better, as compared to my initial impressions from the first song of ‘Jaal’ that I had viewed. A persona with a very vivacious and alive presence on the screen – a live wire presence that would light up whatever frame she was in. There was such an immense amount of communication happening through her expressions – the smiles, the twitching of the eyebrows, the tilt of the neck, the movements and more. The amount of expressions and emotions she would cram into and convey in one line of a song, was equivalent to what most other performers would convey in an entire song. And the energy she would impart to whatever scene and whatever role she would be in, was and continues to be a delight to watch.

Many years after she passed away, and her erstwhile husband Shammi Kapoor, had moved into senior character roles, interviews and articles began to appear that attempted to explain the transformation of Shammi Kapoor as an actor, from the sombre roles in films like ‘Rail Ka Dibba’ (1953), ‘Laila Majnu’ (1953) and ‘Shama Parwaana’ (1954) to the flamboyant energetic roles in ‘Del Deke Dekho’ (1959), ‘Tumsa Nahin Dekha’ (1957) and ‘Junglee’ (1961). It has been said that this transformation was an influence of Geeta Bali’s style and expressions of the characters she did on screen. Shammi Kapoor magnified that expression manifold with his own energy, and became the most successful swashbuckling hero of the 1960s.

Today’s song is from the film ‘Jalpari’ from 1952. The storyline is about a human sailor adventurer Ashok Kumar, who catches the fancy of the fairy princess of the undersea world. The role of the Jalpari, the fairy princess, is played by Geeta Bali. She has the human mortal brought to her palace in the undersea world, and tries to convince him to join her as her consort, and she would make him immortal. This song is her effort to woo him and his emotions for herself.

The lyricists name for this song is not specified. The music is by Pt Gobind Ram and the singing voice is that of Shamshad Begam.

Once again, a memory tickler from the yesteryears, to remember this peerless performer – she passed away this day 52 years ago, at an unimaginable age of 34 years. A salute to this darling performer of the screen – alive forever, in memories.

Song – Khushi Ke Phool Liye Aa Gaye Bahaar Ke Din  (Jalpari) (1952) Singer – Shamshad Begum, Lyrics – [Unattributed], MD – Pt Gobind Ram

Lyrics

khushi ke phool liye
aa gaye bahaar ke din
yehi bahaar ke din
ab banenge pyaar ke din

ho oo oo
raja aaj na jaane doon
main bhi jhoomun tu bhi jhoom
kal ki khabar kisko maloom
chham chham chham chham chhoom
chham chhoom

o raja singaar sajaaye
roop ki rani aayi
roop ki rani aayi
hans le gaa le mauj manaa le
roop ki rani aayi
hans le gaa le mauj manaa le
roop ki rani aayi
duniya mein macha de dhoom
tu bhanwra ban kar ghoom
aur ke phool par jhoom
chham chham chham chham chhoom
chham chhoom

o dewaane kisi ka ho ja
zulfon ki chhaaon mein so ja
o dewaane kisi ka ho ja
zulfon ki chhaaon mein so ja
jaam e mohabbat pee kar jhoom
jaam e mohabbat pee kar jhoom
kal ki khabar kisko maloom
chham chham chham chham chhoom
chham chhoom

oo oo oo
raja aaj na jaane doon
main bhi jhoomun tub hi jhoom
kal ki khabar kisko maloom
chham chham chham chham chhoom
chham chhoom

Hullo to Atuldom

‘Saajan Mere Main Saajan Ki’ is a movie released in 1980. It was directed by Hiren Nag and produced by Ramraj Nahata. It had a star cast of Ashok Kumar, Raj Babbar, Raj Kiran, Rameshwari, Kaajal Kiran, Shashikala, Dina Pathak, Madan Puri etc. Songs were written and composed by Ravindra Jain. I have never seen the movie and so I have no idea what it was all about.

जब मैं छोटा बच्चा था, (and my, not just then. . . even now). . .

No, no I am not going to start a description of my ‘शरारती’ pranks and naughtiness. I am going to tell somethings about my favorite actor and songs; that my favorite male performer was Dev Anand. There was a charismatic attraction in his face, his smile with one out of line canine, his mannerism, and his style of dialogue delivery – all put together made for a striking package,  that would steal hearts. I am talking of the time when films like ‘Baazi’ and ‘Jaal’ and ‘Taxi Driver’ continued to be popular in re runs, and continued to be discussed as iconic films. This popular set of films was shown more than once on TV, and it would be a gala Saturday/Sunday when a Dev Anand film was scheduled. Those were days when the weekly film shows were split across the two last days of the week. And needless to say, the break was very irritating. 🙂
