Charandas ko peene ki jo aadat naa hoti

It is said that Indians do not have sense of humour, and that is why comedy movies in India in general and Bollywood in particular have been few and far between. Movies dealing with action, romance, mythology and many other subjects are common but movies dedicated to comedy are very few.
Most mainstream movies had a few comedians who were there to make people laugh. And the side plot involving the comedien often had little relevance with the main plot.
Kishore Kumar, on the other hand was one whose comedy was always the main plot, and in fact the main attraction of the movies he acted in. The fact that he sang his own comedy songs in addition to acting them out in his unique style make these songs much loved and much admired songs, not only to the people of older generations, even even with the younger generations.
I have posted several wonderful comedy songs with Kishore Kumar as the actor-singer. And I wonder how I forgot to create a category called “Kishore Kumar’s comedy songs”. It is still not too late, I think.
Here is a song of this category from ‘Pehli Jhalak” (1954). This song is “Charandas ko peene ki jo aadat naa hoti”. In this song, Kishore Kumar enacts Charandas as well as Charandas’ harassed wife. 🙂 And needless to say, he sings the song too (lending voices to both the characters).
The lyrics by Rajinder Krishan are very amusing and his description of the behaviour of a drunkard is quite realistic and life like. The lyrics demonstrates his ability to observe life closely and also his ability to describe that life so vividly and in an entertaining manner.
C Ramchandra is the music director.
And this is a song for which several readers had given their farmaishes from time to time. So here is this song that is much in demand among the readers of this blog.

Lyrics
Lallu ki maan
haan
darwazza to khol
pehle naam to bol
arri main hoon tera khasam
hic
Charandas
hic hic
haan
aaj phir peekar aaye ho
tuhra satyaanash
arre maine pee nahin
sirf maze ke liye moonchhon ko lagaayi hai
arre mori daiyya
duhaayi hai duhaayi hai
arre darwaazaa to khol
badi sardi lag rahi hai brr brr
jab tak peene ki jillat nahin chhodoge
ye darwaaja nahin khulega
haa ohh
arre charanadaas ko peene ki jo aadat na hoti
to aaj miyaan baahar beewi andar naa soti
ae ji o ji o ji jeer jeer jee jee
ae ji o ji o ji jeer jeer jee jee
charanadaas ko peene ki jo aadat na hoti
jo aadat na hoti
to aaj miyaan baahar beewi andar na soti
ae ji o ji o ji jeer jeer jee jee
botal se pyaar kiyaa
buraa mere yaar kiyaa
ghar-bhar mein jhagdaa
din-raat ye ragdaa
botal ke chaske ne haay mujhe maar diyaa
haay
botal se yaaron jo ulfat na hoti
jo ulfat na hoti
to aaj miyaan baahar beewi andar na soti
ae ji o ji o ji jeer jeer jee jee
ae ji
haay haay haay haay haay haay haay haay
munh se lage phir zaalim na chhoote
shaam pade hi badan saaraa toote
nazron mein ghoome dukaan sharaab ki
naak mein aaye khushboo kabaab ki
us par mazaa ke khaali ho pocket
nazron mein ghoomen phir beewi kaa locket
mitti ke bhaav jaa ke bech aaye moti
mitti ke bhaav jaa ke bech aaye moti
bech aaye moti
to aaj miyaan baahar beewi andar na soti
ae ji o ji o ji jeer jeer jee jee
ae ji o ji o ji jeer jeer jee jee
jewar se kapdaa kapde se bartan
botal ke paani mein doob gayaa dhan
diyaa naa saal bhar kiraayaa makaan kaa
chadh gayaa sar par karzaa pathaan kaa
dekho ji hote hote apnaa ye haal huaa
betaa ameer kaa than-than Gopaal huaa
bik gaye suit-boot rah gayi dhoti
bik gaye suit-boot rah gayi dhoti
rah gayi dhoti
to aaj miyaan baahar beewi andar na soti
ae ji o ji o ji jeer jeer jee jee
ae ji o ji o ji jeer jeer jee jee
Charandas ko peene ki jo aadat na hoti
jo aadat na hoti
to aaj miyaan baahar beewi andar na soti
ae ji o ji o ji jeer jeer jee jee
ae ji
haay haay haay haay haay haay haay haay haay

Kishore Kumar could do magic with his voice and throat! No other singer has been able to do the different sounds that KK has been able to produce, be it the famous yodeling or these kukuku sounds or the male and female impersonations, or best of all, the parody of classical music, as in Padosan. Amazing!
