Rickshey pe mere tum aa baithe

Posted on: July 17, 2010

Out of all the modes of public transport, tri wheeler Cycle rickshaw (popularly called Rickshaw) has been one of the most popular mode of transport of most Indians for several decades. This kind of rickshaw is ubiquitous in Indian cities even today, except in some metropilital cities where it is not allowed. You can see cycle rickshaw in Old Delhi, but not in New Delhi, for example.

Then there was another kind of rickshaw, one that was popular in East Asia (viz China), which was a two wheeler and which was pulled with hand by the rickshaw puller , instead of pedalling it. In India, I have seen this kind of hand rickshaw in Calcutta in 1970. This kind of rickshaw may have been in use in other parts, viz. Bombay too till 1950s, but I am not sure. In Calcutta , one can find all modes of public transport even today, including obsolete modes of transport, viz. Trams. From Bollywood movies, I have come to know that Bombay too used to have Trams till 1950s.

Coming to Rickshaw songs in Bollywood movies, there have been very few such songs that I am aware of. And the songs that I am aware of are cycle rickshaw songs.

Here is a hand rickshaw song from a Bollywood movie. This song is from ‘Dil Tera Deewaanaa” (1962), which was a Shammi Kapoor,Mala Sinha starrer. But no, this song is not picturised on them. In stead, this song is picturised on Mehmood and Shubha Khote, who were a hit pair of comediens those days.

This song, which is a stage song too, is sung by Rafi and Asha Bhonsle. Shailendra is the lyricist and Shankar Jaikishan composed the music.

The song is picturised on Mehmood and Shubha Khote, with several actors also figuring in he picturisation as spectators of this stage item. Hauling a hand rickshaw is a tough and skillful job, and here Mehmood shows his skill in handling this rickshaw expertly, and he in fact shows some nifty tricks with the rickshaw. I recall that in one song, Johny Walker shows some great tricks on a bicycle. These comdiens were certainly very skilled when it came to handling bicycles, rickshaws etc.

PS- These days, motorised triwheelers, viz auto rickshaws are also colloquially called Rickshaw, but real rickshaw is the one that is pulled with human power.

Song-Rickshe pe mere tum aa baithe (Dil Tera Deewaana) (1962) Singers-Rafi, Asha Bhonsle, Shailendra,MD-Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics

Rickshe pe mere tum aa baithe
ab mera hunar dekho
deta hai maze kaise kaise
apna ye safar dekho
haan
rickshe pe tumhaare aa baithi
khushiyaan hai jidhar dekho
le pahunchi mujhe kis duniya mein
chaahat ki lahar dekho
he
Rickshe pe mere tum aa baithe
ab mera hunar dekho
deta hai maze kaise kaise
apna ye safar dekho

dulki chaloon main
sarpat chaloon main
har chaal hai niraali
nikloon idhar se
nikloon udhar se
jaise subah ki laali
dulki chaloon main
sarpat chaloon main
har chaal hai niraali
nikloon idhar se
nikloon udhar se
jaise subah ki laali
he he
mehfil mein tumhe dekhoon apne
tum saaraa shahar dekho
detaa hai maze kaise kaise
apna ye safar dekho
haan
rickshe pe tumhaare aa baithi
khushiyaan hai jidhar dekho
le pahunchi mujhe kis duniya mein
chaahat ki lahar dekho

haay haay
hoy hoy
haay haay

saj dhaj ke aaj main
tere saath nilkli hoon us nagar ko
roke na koi toke na koi
yahaan pyaar ki dagar ko
saj dhaj ke aaj main
tere saath nilkli hoon us nagar ko
roke na koi toke na koi
yahaan pyaar ki dagar ko
he he
main mahle domahale chhod aayi
mera bhi jigar dekho
le pahunchi mujhe kis duniya mein
chaahat ki lehar dekho
rickshe pe mere tum aa baithe
ab mera hunar dekho
detaa hai maze kaise kaise
apna ye safar dekho

hai tan pe bojh hai man pe bojh
lekin gadhaa nahin hoon
chehra fakeer dil benazeer
dil ka buraa nahin hoon
hai tan pe bojh hai man pe bojh
lekin gadhaa nahin hoon
chehra fakeer dil benazeer
dil ka buraa nahin hoon
ho ho
kyaa kuchh na bana de ye mujhko
tum apni nazar dekho
deta hai maze kaise kaise
apna ye safar dekho
ho
ricshe pe tumhaare aa baithi
khushiyaan hain jidhar dekho
le pahunchi mujhe kis duniya mein
chaahat ki lehar dekho

There is another hand rickshaw song also – from Chhoti Bahen – sung by Rafi – Main rickshaw wallah main rickshaw wallah, Hai chaar ke baraabar ye do taang wallah … , filmed on Mehmood! You may feel free to consider that as my next farmaish!

Talking about trams in Bombay, I have memories of trams in Bombay! This was probably around 1958, though I do not know if I ever traveled in one.

I think you also need to include one more song – yes you may take it as a farmaish from my side. “Main Hoon Goda, Yeh Hai Gadi, Meri Ricksahw Sabse Nirali, Na Gori Hai Na Yeh Kaali, Ghar Tak Pahunchadenewali” this was sung by Kishore Kumar for Mehmood in “Kunwara Baap”
