Bhajan binaa baawre

Posted on: October 20, 2010

Here is a rare bhajan from an obscure movie called “Rooplekha” (1962). This movie was a stunt movie which was directed by Mohammad Hussain for Prithvi Pictures, Bombay. the movie had Mahipal and Vijaya Chaudhary in lead roles with Sundar, raj Adeeb, Shaam Kumar, Krishna Kumari, Amar, Jeewan Kala, Madhumati, Rafiq, Munshi Munaqqa, Mohammad Ali, Ghani, Arvind Kumar, Dondu, Balram, Nazeer Kashmiri etc in it.

This song is similar to “Man tadpat Hari darshan ko aaj”. This bhajan is sung by Rafi, written by Farooque Qaisar and composed by Nashaad. And listening to this bhajan is as divine an experience as listening to the above mentioned “Baija Baawraa”(1952) bhajan.

PS-There was another movie which was released in 1949. There are sites that give the erroneous information about this song being from 1949, but this song is from 1962.

Yes, Nashaad is different from Naushad.

Nice–there are similarities with the Baiju Bawra bhajan.

Like

As both songs have been based on Raag Malkauns hence the similarity.

Before Baiju-Bawara ?
Thanks Atul .
It is gem of a song/Bhajan.

Nashaad’s real name was Shoukat Haideri aka Shoukat Dehlvi when Naushad Sahib refused to compose music for Nakshab Jarchavi for his film Naghma, he took it as an insult and challenged that he will produce another Naushad by the magic of his lyrics,He gave Shaukat Hyderi his name Nashad. Songs of Naghma became instant hits but Nashad could never reach anywhere near the one and only Naushad Ali.

Hat’s off to the team of singer rafi, music director Nashaad and lyricist Faarooque Qaisar, who together produced this marvelous bhajan, which predated the famous “man tadpat hari darshan ko aaz”!

This bhajan was originally a non-film bhajan and Vidya Nath Seth used to sing it on the radio before partition with great devotion,Gramophone record was also available.

The non-filmi bhajan you are mentioning is originally a Kabir Bhajan, sung by many artists,in various times,as I know.
The above bhajan is a filmi bhajan, written by Faruq qaiser, written in 1962.
The wordings of both are different, though the opening line is same.

There seems to be some confusion about film Rooplekha. The one directed by Mohammad Hussain was produced by Y .Nensey and was written by Hasrat Lucknawi. Songs were written by Khumar..,Aziz Siddiqi and Faruq. There were in all 7 songs which did not include this bhajan. The music according to the credit list was composed by Khan Mastana and Nisar Bazmi, however, three songs had been composed by Sajjad Hussain.

If this beautiful bhajan was composed in 1962 then it was after Baiju Banwra.

Khwaja Sultan Ahmed ji,

I will clarify.I have no confusion.
ROOPLEKHA was produced in 1934,1949 and 1962.
Forget about 1934 Rooplekha.
Rooplekha-1949 was directed by Mohd. Hussain,MD was Khan Masthana and lyrics were by Khumar.Aziz and Faruq. This Bhajan is NOT from this film. There were 3 songs of Sajjad saab in this film.

Now,Rooplekha-1962 was poduced by N.N.Sippy and was directed by again Mohd.Hussain only.He was common in 1949 and 1962 films.MD was Naashad and Lyrics were by Faruq Qaisar. The dialogues ans s/play was by Sarashar Sailani and Ram swaroop.
The above bhajan is IN THIS FILM.The HMV Record No. is N-53987.
Since Rooplekha-1949 was mentioned in the writeup of above bhajan,I tried to clarify that NOT 1949,but the 1962 Rooplekha had this bhajan.
I hope the matter is clear now.

Makes me nostalgic, used to hear this bhajan as a child over and over and now it all seems so true.

Dear Arunkumarji,
Thank you very much for your response.I never insinuated that your information was not correct, In fact I was referring to the impression that this bhajan was fore-runner of Man tadapat Hari darshan ko aaj.’ Actually this song was composed about four years after the release of Baiju Baawra’
The third Rooplekha’ was produced by New Theatres in the year 1934 and was directed by Prince P.C.Barua and the music was composed by the GREAT R.C.Boral.The cast included K.L.Saigal,Rattan Bai,Jairaj, Master Nisar and others. So here we are with all the three ROOPLEKHAS.

I find this beautiful song missing in the list so can be including in it. “chand hai tare hain aur ye tanhai hai”“Roop Lekha”(1962) – Mahipal and Vijaya Chaudhary are performing. The song is sung by Mohammed Rafi and Suman Kalyanpur. Farooque Kaiser is the lyricist. Music is composed by Naashaad (Shakat Ali Dehlavi). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2B224bhkYX0
