Thodi der ke liye mere ho jaao

“Akeli Mat Jaiyya” (1963) is a movie whose story line was as silly as they come. No, I have not watched this movie. This is what Raja told me about this movie.
That does not stop him or me or anyone else for that matter from enjoying the songs of this movie. So here is a song from this movie. This song is a cabarat song sung by Asha Bhonsle and it is picturised on Minu Mumtaz. She performs this cabarat in a party where Rajendra Kumar and Meena Kumari are also seated among others. The expressions on Meena Kumari’s face are priceless. She stares at Rajendra Kumar with looks of admonition as if to say-“how can you bring me, an epitome of Bhartiya Narihood, to a place where such open display of moral turpitude takes place”. And Rajendra Kumar, true to form, can read her eyes.
The music sounds as if it is composed by O P Nayyar. But that is not so. It may surprise many to find that this O P Nayyarish music is composed by Madan Mohan. Majrooh Sultranpuri is the lyricist and it is interesting to notice that lyricists took their jobs of lyrics writing so seriously even for cabarat songs. Majrooh Sultanpuri has certainly worked hard to come up with the lyrics of this song.

song-Thodi der ke liye mere ho jaao (Akeli Mat Jaiyyo) (1963) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Madan Mohan
Lyrics
thodi der ke liye
mere ho jaao
thodi der ke liye mere ho jaao
mere dil meri saanson mein kho jaao
mere pyaar ki chhaanon mein kho jaao
mile phir na mile kabhi ham
haay
thodi der ke liye mere ho jaao
mere dil meri saanson mein kho jaao
mere pyaar ki chhaanon mein kho jaao
mile phir na mile kabhi ham
haay
thodi der ke liye mere ho jaao
le raat koi angdaayi
bani baat meri tanhaayi
le raat koi angdaayi
bani baat meri tanhaayi
dil meraa lage qismat jage
yoon baithe adaa se muskaao
haay
thodi der ke liye mere ho jaao
thodi der ke liye mere ho jaao
mere dil meri saanson mein kho jaao
mere pyaar ki chhaanon mein kho jaao
mile phir na milen kabhi ham
haay
thodi der ke liye mere ho jaao
ban jaaun shamaa mehfil ki
khidki to khuli huyi dil ki
ban jaaun shamaa mehfil ki
khidki to khuli huyi dil ki
ghar soonaa-soonaa
dar soonaa-soonaa
tumhin ek chiraagh jalaao
haay
thodi der ke liye mere ho jaao
thodi der ke liye mere ho jaao
mere dil meri saanson mein kho jaao
mere pyaar ki chhaanon mein kho jaao
mile phir na mile kabhi ham
haay
thodi der ke liye mere ho jaao
mere dil meri saanson mein kho jaao
mere pyaar ki chhaanon mein kho jaao
mile phir na mile kabhi ham
haay
thodi der ke liye mere ho jaao

Tom once called this the best cabaret ever, I agree. I just adore Minoo Mumtaz in this. As you say, the lyrics, the music and the singing are the best.

Though I did not know which movie this song was from, I have always known this song because … it starts with “th”, which was very useful when playing Antakshari! When we play in groups these days, with so many couples being only in their forties, it is even more useful because very few people know this song, and it annoys them to hear me pull this one out! It is definitely an interesting song!
Thanks, Atul!
