Hullo Atuldom

We are all fans of someone or other. We also find that our idols are fans of talents from their growing up years, whom they used to idolize & continue to do so. I can enumerate many examples to show this- {1} Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Shahrukh Khan etc have a huge fan following but, at various occasions they have confessed that seeing Dilip Kumar on-screen is what made them want to be become actors. {2} Dilip Kumar & Dev Anand are said to have been inspired by Ashok Kumar. {4} Waheeda Rehman’s is another case in point – her fangirl moment came when she got to face the camera alongside Dev Anand for ‘C.I.D’ (1956).

Do we need more examples? SP Balasubramaniam was a huge fan of the legend Mohd. Rafi – like the rest of the followers of Indian Film Music. SPB (he used to be addressed as SPB in addition to being called Balu Sir) himself was a singer with a huge fan following. Balu Sir has mentioned ‘N’ number of times how he used to be moved to tears when he heard some of Rafi Saab’s songs. I am sure he must have felt privileged when he got to sing songs of similar moods & genres. Today’s song is one such song i.e. one that has somber feelings.

1981 was the year that the audiences of Hindi films heard the voice of SP Balasubramaniam for the first time in ‘Ek Duje Ke Liye’ (EDKL); which had him share the recording room with another of his own favorite singers- Lata Mangeshkar & he was never tired about relating how he felt on that day. Following the success of ‘EDKL’ his voice was used for a few hundred songs in Hindi. When Salman Khan got successful with ‘Maine Pyaar Kiya’ (1989) part of it was because he sang in Balu Sir’s voice. For most of the early part of the 1990s Salman Khan sang in Balu Sir’s voice. In the period from 1981 to 1989 SPB’s voice was used for other actors too, in addition to singing for Kamal Haasan who was making his way into Hindi films.

‘Ek Hi Bhool’ (EHB) also released in 1981, a few months after ‘EDKL’. It had Rekha (Sadhana) & Jeetendra (Ramkumar) playing a couple who have separated (not divorced) because of some misunderstandings. This leads to Sadhana taking up a job to look after the needs of the family which, now, includes her son (who is born post the separation). It is an Indian cinema, so naturally when the heroine gets a new ‘boss’ it has to be her estranged  husband. And he will still be in love with his wife who will try her level-best to avoid him. Then there will be the usual office- gossip involving the two {remember, it had happened with Mala Sinha & Amitabh Bachchan in ‘Sanjog’ (1972)}. Plus, we have Ramkumar who tries to get back with Sadhana using all kinds of tactics including wooing the son with gifts etc. That means ‘EHB’ had all the ingredients of a family drama with an office Casanova (Mazhar Khan) thrown in for good measure.

The film was directed by T Rama Rao, produced by A Purnachandra Rao & had story by K Bhagyaraj. EHB was the remake of Bhagyaraj’s Tamil ‘Mouna Geethangal’ (‘Silent Melodies’ which also released in 1981). Songs of ‘EHB’ were written by Anand Bakshi & tuned by Laxmikant Pyarelal. Playback singers used were SP Balasubramaniam, Asha Bhonsle & Rajeshwari who is Laxmikant’s daughter.

We are remembering Balu Sir on his death anniversary. He passed away on this date in 2020 due to Covid19 related respiratory complications.

This song reminds me of Rafi Saab’s “Kabhi Khud Pe Kabhi Halaat Pe Rona Aaya” & “Hai Duniya Usi Ki Zamaana Usi Ka“.

Song-Bekhudi ka bada sahaara hai (Ek Hi Bhool)(1981) Singer-SP Balasubramaniam, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal

Lyrics

bekhudi ka bada sahaara hai ae
bekhudi ka bada sahaara hai
varna duniya mein kya hamaara hai
log marte hain maut aane se ae
log marte hain maut aane se
hamko is zindagi ne maara hai ae
bekhudi ka bada sahaara hai

aadmi kuchh bhi kar nahin sakta
aadmi kuchh bhi kar nahin sakta
waqt aisa guzar nahin sakta
waqt aisa magar guzaara hai
bekhudi ka bada sahaara hai
varna duniya mein kya hamaara hai ae
bekhudi ka bada sahaara hai

kitni halki hai kitni bojhil hai
kitni halki hai kitni bojhil hai
koyi aurat nahin ye botal hai
band ismein jahaan saara hai ae
bekhudi ka bada sahaara hai
varna duniya mein kya hamaara hai ae
bekhudi ka bada sahaara hai

is muqaddar ka ye sitam dekho
is muqaddar ka ye sitam dekho
doobte jaa rahe hain ham dekho
aur vo saamne kinaara hai ae
bekhudi ka bada sahaara hai
varna duniya mein kya hamaara hai
log marte hain maut aane se
hamko is zindagi ne maara hai ae
bekhudi ka bada sahaara hai

“Himmat”(1970) was produced by P Mallikarjun Rao and directed by Ravi Nagaich for Bharati International, Madras. The movie had Jeetedra,Mumtaz, Prem Chopra, K.N.Singh, Naaz, Asit Sen, Tun tun, Pravin Paul, Aruna Irani, Bobby, Jagdeep,Prabhakar Reddy, Ananda Mohan, Puranik, Premkumar, J.N.Anand, Kiran, Joshi, Nadir, Mamajee, Akhtar, Pande, Pratibha, Raja Rao, Brahm Bhardwaj etc in it. The movie also had guest appearances by Agha, Lata Arora, Master Sachin, Jayadev and club dancer Lakshmi.

“Himmat”(1970) had seven songs in it. Five songs have been covered so far.

Here is the sixth song from the movie.

The song is sung by Rafi. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

From the picturisation, one can see that Mumtaz is dressed as a boy and has befriended Jeetendra. The movie watchers can easy see through the disguise of Mumtaz but our hero cannot. But he does feel like this new friend of his would be better off as a girl. In this song he expresses his feelings (while teasing Mumtaz) what he would have done had “he” been a “she”.

This song was quite a popular song of its time. I was aware of the song but I did not know the details of this song. It is only today (53 years later) that I have become aware of the details of the song that were sent to me by Prakashchandra alongwith the lyrics of the song.

Lyrics of the audio version are longer than the picturised version.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2013-2023) – Song No.134
————————————————————————————–

On this date ten years ago (20 June 2013), seven songs from seven different movies were covered in the blog.

Here are the details of the songs covered on that day:-

Post No Song Title Name of the movie Remarks
8219 Fariyaad na kar aansoo na baha Ghar (1945) 4 songs out of 8 covered by now
8220 Saari khushiyaan saath aayin Jeewan Jyoti(1953) Movie YIPPEED by now
8221 Main to naina milaayike huyi re badnaam Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiyaa (1966) Movie YIPPEED by now
8222 Kab tak huzoor roothhe rahoge Aulaad (1968) Movie YIPPEED by now
8223 Maan jaaiye maan jaaiye Himmat (1970) 4 songs out of 7 covered by now
8224 Ye jeena hai angoor ka daana Khatta Meetha(1977) 4 songs out of 7 covered by now
8225 Raam karey Allah karey Aap Ke Deewaane (1980) movie YIPPEED by now

We observe that four movies (out of seven) whose songs were covered on this date ten years ago have since been YIPPEED in the blog. That leaves us with three unYIPPEED movies that are eligible for Blog Ten Year Challenge today.

‘Himmat’ (1970) is one of the unYIPPEED movies and thus eligible for Blog Ten Year Challenge today (20 June 2023).

‘Himmat’ was directed by Ravi Nagaich for Bharti International, Madras. This ‘social’ movie had Mumtaz, Jeetendra, Prem Chopra, KN Singh, Naaz, Asit Sen, Tun Tun, Parveen Pal, Aruna Irani, Jagdeep, Babi, Agra, Prabhakar Reddy etc in it.

The film had seven songs in it.

This movie made its debut ten years ago on this date. Two more songs followed in quick succession. Then there was a long break of five years. The fourth song from the movie was covered in 2018. Here is the fifth song from ‘Himmat’ to appear in the blog. This song appears in the blog five years after the fourth song from the movie appeared in the blog. This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

The song is picturised as a stage dance song on Mumtaz while her performance is being watched by many shady characters. Jeetendra reaches the place just as the song is about to end. He climbs up the stage and slaps Mumtaz and thus ends Mumtaz’s dance performance. So Mumtaz , in the view of Jeetendra was acting in a manner that was unbecoming of a “shareef aur izzatdaar gharon ki ladkiyaan“. 🙂 In true Hindi movie fashion, Jeetendra waits for the song to end and then acts. 🙂 I have yet to see a song getting interrupted within seconds of its commencement. 🙂

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

The song itself is reminiscent of a few Laxmikant Pyarelal compositions of those days. One gets a feeling that Laxmikant Pyarelal had a stock tune that they would use for Mumtaz dance songs of those days.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # (Debutant Movie-Naalaayak -1978)
——————————————-——————————————

There are few write-ups that I had left unfinished before the ‘gang-out’ happened. They remained unfinished and so got delayed. Today’s post is one such delayed post which was about ‘summer vacations in my childhood days’ and memory of one such movie watched during one summer vacation.

The vacations are over this year and I guess that schools have re-opened everywhere, except a few states where vacations have been extended due to severe heat conditions that still exist.

This article can serve as a part of ‘summer nostalgia’ post that gives me an opportunity to remember this movie and enjoy one of its songs.

Summer vacations spent during our childhood are very special for us. Memories of those summer vacations are fondly remembered and recalled by us even after we grow up. These are cherished memories that never fade away.

This is a very special time of the year when my memories of summer vacations spent many decades ago during my childhood get recollected and refreshed. Every year in ‘summer’, I remember ‘summer vacations’ of my childhood days. Summer vacation of 1983 is one summer vacation that I remember with special fondness.

I had passed the standard tenth examination in ‘1983’ so this was an important year of my life and the memories of this year’s ‘summer’ are also special for many reasons. I have written about them in my earlier posts on the blog. Still, much is yet to be written about the movies and songs of ‘1983’. But I am not going to write about ‘1983’ in this article. Rather I am going back four years to the ‘summer of the year 1979’ in this post.

I vividly remember the daily routine during the summer vacations. Our day used to start with watering the plants in our courtyard, sprinkling of water in the courtyard. Then after tea and snacks we used to go out and play cricket with all friends in the neighborhood.

Coming back after playing cricket we used to take bath and wait for lunch. The lunch time was coincided with listening to songs on radio. (I specially remember that during one such afternoon I got to listen to the songs of ‘Amarprem-1971’ in the programme ‘Ek Hi Film Ke Geet’ and I fell in love with them.

The afternoon time after lunch was divided between reading books, comics, etc, and taking nap.

We eagerly waited for the heat and sun to come down. After five in the evening we used to play cricket again. After our cricke, it was time for storing water, watering the plants and sprinkling water in the courtyard again. In those We used to sleep in the courtyard in the open air below the skies so spraying water in the vicinity helped in keep in the place cool and comfortable.

Some days in the morning we used to go for shopping with the elders for bringing mangoes, water melon etc which used to be the part of the ‘celebration’ of ‘summer’.

In the evening we expected to get treated with ‘kairi panaa’ with dinner.

Other than reading books, playing cricket, and cards, we brothers used to eagerly await for the most ‘thrilling’ part of the summer and i.e. visiting to our grandparents staying at the nearby city Akola which was around 30 kms from Paras-the place we were staying.

That meant we would be getting to watch movies with our cousins and one of my Uncles. That was the most exciting part of the summer. There we used to get ‘ice-candy’s’, ‘kulfis’ daily. While watching the movies we used to eat ‘kharemure’ (salted peanuts), ‘jamuns’, etc. We also used to buy booklets of ‘film songs’ which my grandfather never liked. Then we used to play ‘cinema’ in our house by holding pieces of films collected and projecting them on a white cloth by using sunlight from a mirror reflection on the film and a magnifying glass to make it big.

Recalling those days I wonder how we enjoyed (and were able to ‘live’:) ) without TV, Mobile, Internet etc. 🙂

Coming back to movie watching, I remember we mostly preferred to watch the ‘matinee’ show or ‘afternoon show’ so that we were back home by evening time.

During one such vacation, which must be in ‘1979-summer’ we (I and my two younger brothers) and cousins had watched this movie ‘Naalaayak-1978’ at Akola (CP & Berar circuit). I just now noticed in HFGK that this movie was passed by Censor Board with ‘A’ certificate. I wonder how we children were allowed entry into the movie hall to watch this movie. I have no recollections if one of my Uncles accompanied us. I do not have any recollections whether we liked the movie or not. Those were the days when we were not ‘fans’ of any actors. Watching a movie was considered ‘more important’ by us and not the starcast.

In those days movies used to get released in small town theatres much after they were passed by the Censor Boards and released in major cities. The time gap for a movie to get released in smaller places (like Akola)after their release in major cities was two to four months.

I vividly recall that Akola joined the ranks of “major” cities in early 1980s, in the sense that movies began to get released in Akola on the very day of the ‘All India Release’ of the movie. For example, ‘Laawaaris-1981’ was released in Akola on the same date when it was released in other major locations in the country.

It was also common for films to run in theatres for many weeks (15 to 30 weeks or even more like 50 weeks) unlike nowadays when some movies disappear within a week even before they get noticed.

The lasting memory from this movie ‘Naalaayak’ that I carried is the song under discussion.

But before that here are the details of this movie:-

“Naalaayak-1978” was directed by Padmanabh for ‘Veena Films, Bombay’. It was produced by Jagdish Sharma. It had Jeetendra, Leena Chandavarkar, Nirupa Roy, Satyen Kappu, Sujit Kumar, Asrani, Dara Singh, Master Raju, Raza Murad, Sanjana, Murad, Dhanraj, Aarti, Darshan, Onkar, Abhimanyu Sharma, Gurbachan, Kundan, Thakur, Sunil Johan, Kiran Khan and others.

Actress Bindu had made a special appearance in this movie.

Story and screenplay of this movie was written by K.A. Narayan and dialogues were written by Ahsan Rizvi.

Editing of this film was done by Das Dhaimade.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 12.12.1978 with restricted viewing i.e. ‘A’ Certificate.

“Naalaayak-1978” has four songs written by Verma Malik and composed by Kalyanji-Anandji. Lata Mangeshkar, Mohd Rafi and Kishore Kumar had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

The story of this movie is very simple and the story progresses on the screen in a predictable way to bring the desired results.

Laxman (Jeetendra) is the ‘good-for-nothing (naa-laayak)’ younger brother of Ram Narayan (Satyendra Kappu). Laxman is brought up by his sister-in-law Sita (Nirupa Roy) after his mother’s death. But this Laxman is not ideal younger brother that we know in ‘stories’ from ‘Ramayana’.
And as usual in our movies the ‘laad pyaar’ by the Bhaabhi has totally spoiled this young man in his twenties (in the movie), (Jeetendra must be around 35-36 in his real life then ).

His lifestyle is totally against his elder brother’s ideals and principles. While his elder brother is an honest and hardworking person and the most trustful of his employer, Laxman is engaged in gambling, night clubs, drinks and everything which is not acceptable to his elder brother.

Well we have Raju (Master Raju) the son of Ram Narayan and Sita Narayan who loves his Chachu Laxman very much.

They have a family friend Prem (Sujit Kumar) who frequently visits the family but has his own agenda which the family is unaware of. And there is also a good family friend Inspector Ramesh (Raza Murad).

Rita is modern women who often visits the night club and enjoys gambling. She has younger sister Seema (Leena Chandavarkar). Rita and Laxman know each other well and Laxman often visits Rita to play cards and drinks.

It so happens that once Rita orders a ‘necklace’ from the jeweler where Ram Narayan is working. When the product is ready and since it is costly (six lakhs) the owner asks Ram Narayan to deliver this necklace personally to Rita at her home.

Later on Rita calls to the jeweler and informs that this ‘haar’ is ‘naqli’ and she will go to police if this is not settled. Ram Narayan on advice of Prem goes to Rita’s home to the matter, but it does not get resolved.
He leaves Rita’s place, but Rita is murdered around the same time and all the evidences brings Ram Narayan in jail. He is convicted in court under the charge of murder and sentenced to death.

From here our ‘naalaayak’ hero comes into action and with the help of Pahalwan (Dara Singh) and Lallu Kumar (Asrani) finds out the real culprit and get released his ‘begunaah’ elder brother.
Lallu Kumar (Asrani) and Pahalwan also provides ‘comic relief’ in between.

Finally Laxman’s Bhaabhi Sita has to say this ‘ab meri nazron mein tujhse badaa laayak aur koyi nahin’ 🙂

So, where people would take years to become ‘good for something’ or ‘laayak’ our hero does it with just in over ‘two hours’ time 🙂

Coming back to the actor who plays the elder brother of Jeetendra in this movie i.e. Satyen Kappu.

In my growing days when I used to come across this name Satyen Kappu I used to think that there might be some mistake and maybe the name has been spelled wrongly instead of Satyen Kapoor. But it is not like that. His screen name is indeed Satyen Kappu.

In his childhood days he used to be addressed by the nickname of ‘Kappu’. He continued the same for his ‘screen name’.

However, it seems that, his screen name ‘Satyen Kappu’ was arrived after lot of thinking after exploring ‘several’ options.

Why I am saying this because if one carefully notes the credits of his earlier movies he was credited initially as Satyendra Kumar in ‘Kabuliwaala-1961’, as Satyendra Kapoor in ‘Kati Patang-1970’, as Satyendra Kumar (Kappu) in ‘Amarprem-1971’, as ‘Sathyan Kumar in ‘Chhoti Bahu-1971’, again as Satyendra Kapoor’ in ‘Jawaani Deewaani-1972’, and ‘Satyandra Kappu’ in ‘Seeta Aur Geeta-1972’ etc and later on continuing with ‘Satyendra Kappu’. 🙂

Satyen Kappu was born as Satyendra Sharma (and not as Satyendra Kapoor as many sources mentioned) on 6th February’1931 in Bombay (now Mumbai).

His father owned an ice-cream factory in Mumbai known as ‘Delight Kulfi’. His parents were Budhsen Sharma (Panipat, Haryana) and Gangadevi. He had an elder brother Radheshyam Sharma.

Both of Satyen Kappu’s parents left the children in their childhood and their relatives brought them up. They took Satyen to the ‘Gurukul Kurukshetra’. His Primary education was in Sanskrit medium there at the ‘Gurukul’.

Then he came to Panipat after some years and used to watch ‘jalsa’ or ‘drama’ (in Sanskrit e.g. Mahabharata) which was played by senior students of ‘gurukul’ Kurukshetra which he used to watch. Satyen stayed in Panipat for two years. He used to participate in ‘Ramleela’ where he used to play Sita in ‘Ramayan’. And on ‘janmashtami’ he used to play Radha in the dramas. Seeing his interest in ‘acting’ his brother took him to Bombay where he started watching dramas of ‘Prithvi Theatres’. In Bombay he soon got to know about ‘IPTA’ and soon he joined it IPTA in 1953 as a member.

His only wish was to become a ‘good actor’ and that desire kept him doing different roles in the dramas. Satyen Kappu was a great admirer of Ashok Kumar and his style of acting, and wanted to become a versatile actor like him.

The famous director Bimal Roy was the President of IPTA at that time. He noticed the talent in Satyen Kappu and he gave him small roles in his films. Satyen Kappu had a very small role in ‘Naukri-1954’ where he had only one scene with Kishore Kumar (as mentioned by Satyendra Kappu himself). Later on he was given a role in ‘Kabuliwaala-1961’ (credited as Satyendra Kumar). However ‘theatre’ was Satyen’s passion so he was more interested in that and he keep continuing working in theatre. Later on when he was acting in movies, he also used to work in plays (in theatre) and TV Serials too and was very much active till his last days.

It so happened that watching one of his dramas producers/directors Ramesh Behl, Narendra Bedi, Shakti Samanta and Ramesh Sippy offered him roles in their movies and thus Satyen Kappu become a regular feature in films and went on to act in around more than 350 films.

He gives full credit to IPTA for developing his acting skills as wells as his personality and proudly mentions ‘IPTA’ as his ‘school of life’ and giving him the real education to sustain in life and achieve whatever he wanted to be – a good actor.

He used to say that he has not taken much education but working at IPTA, observing different people in real life and ‘real life characters around’ has teach him many things.
He also admires the ‘great dramatist’ Agha Hashar (Muhammad Shah known as Agha Hashar Kashmiri 03.04.1879-01.04.1935) who influenced him a lot.

We have seen Satyen Kappu doing all type of character roles and always giving a ‘strong’ and ‘remarkable’ performance on screen in whatever role he did for. There is a long list of movies where we have seen him in various character roles with positive as well as negative shades. I think there is not a movie of him where I have watched the movie and not liked his performance. He looked always composed, sober, and down to earth in his roles and so was he in his life too. His role in the movie ‘Sholay-1975’ is mostly remembered for. I would also like to mention one of his later movies i.e. ‘Aaj Ka MLA Ramavtar-1985’ where I liked him in the role of a ‘politician’. He had been a co-star of many of the great actors of Hindi Films, e.g. ‘Yaadon Ki Baarat’, ‘Khotey Sikke’, ‘Don’, ‘Deewaar’, ‘Dost’, ‘Haathh Ki Safaai’, ‘Dream Girl’, ‘Mr. Natwarlal’, ‘Chameli Ki Shaadi’ etc etc where he appeared in different roles.

He loved poetry and that influence can also be seen in his acting expressing different emotions.

He also acted in regional movies in ‘Gujarati’, ‘Rajasthani’, ‘Awadhi’, ‘Brij’, ‘Bhojpuri’ etc.

He married to Kailashwati on 8th December ‘1951 and they had four daughters (Uma, Vinita, Dipti and Trupti). Trupti became a writer and she writes screenplay and dialogues for the Television Serials.

‘Sarhad Paar-2006’ was the last movie he appeared in.

He left this world on 27.10.2007 at Mumbai due to ‘cardiac arrest’. (He was suffering from Diabetes).

🙂

Laxman (Jeetendra) meets Seema (Leena Chandavarkar) for the first time on the ‘Race course’ where she is ‘loosing’ on every ‘horse’ and Laxman wins on a ‘mare’.
Laxman tries to give her some ‘tips’ on ‘horse trading’ but she refuses ‘apni tips-wips apne paas hi rehne dijiye mujhe ghodon se koi dilchaspee nahin.’

Seema tells him that is she is not interested in any type of ‘juaa’ because she neither has the ‘shauk’ or ‘zaroorat’ of it … she came there only to accompany her friend.

‘Zindagi bhi to ek juaa hai madam, ismein kabhi jaan lagaani padti hai kabhi dil haarnaa padtaa hai’ Laxman tries to impress her again …

‘To haariye jaakar dil vil, kaun aap ko rokta hai, lekin mere pichhe kyun pade hain aap… badtameez kahin kaa … naalaayak!!!

Little did she know that it doesn’t matter to a man if ‘maa, baap, bhaai, bhaabhi’ and all others say this ‘word’ to a man, but a ‘girl’ like ‘her’ couldn’t because that could be a reason for the ‘hero’ to ‘consume poison’ or break into a song 🙂 like this one …

Enjoy the song and try to listen to the other songs that you may ‘land on’ while humming this song. 🙂

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # (Memories of Binaca Geetmala)
——————————————-———————————————

“Binaca Geetmala” was the ‘most popular’ programme on radio (or was it the only one?) during my growing years.

All music lovers and readers on this blog are surely aware of this popular programme conducted by the famous Amin Sayani ji, and nobody, those who got to listen to his voice, would ever forget his voice and his style of presenting the weekly countdown of songs.

I remember, we children used to eagerly wait for the ‘Wednesday’ evening every week to enjoy the songs and to know about the placement of our favorite songs in the musical paaydaan.

The next day there would be discussions among family members and group of friends regarding the songs featured and also those that got omitted but were liked by many of us. Such discussions would continue for the whole week till the next Wednesday arrived with new countdown of popular songs.

Our favorite songs would not always make it to the programme. Sometimes songs that people like me did not like would make it to this ‘popular list’.

Today I am presenting one such song which is from the movie ‘Apnaapan-1977’.

All music lovers are aware that this movie had this famous song ‘aadmi musaafir hai..’ sung by Rafi Saab and Lata Mangeshkar. Even the other songs from this movie are good songs and it is one of the best scores of composers Laxmikant-Pyarelal of that year ‘1977’. This particular song stood at number two in the ‘annual list of Binaca Geetmala of the year ‘1978’’.

There was one more song from this movie which was ranked at number twenty-seventh in this ‘annual list of 1978’.

Guess this song!!

No! It was not was not ‘is duniya mein jeenaa hai is duniyaa mein marnaa hai, tere dil mein jagah milee ab swarg hamen kya karnaa hai’ sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar. Personally I would have preferred this song in that list.

But, the ‘recordon ki bikri’ (sale of gramophone records of the movie) and the shortaa sanghon ki raay’ (opinion of the ‘Radio listeners’ clubs) mattered 🙂 naturally!! 🙂
(waise records to poore album ke hi bike honge shaayad 🙂 )

So, today we are going to listen to this song which was more popular during those days. 🙂

(We will have a few such songs from the seventies in future posts on the blog).

“Apnaapan-1977” was directed by J. Omprakash for him home productions ‘Filmyug’. It had Jeetendra, Reena Roy, Sulakshana Pandit, Sanjeev Kumar (special appearance), Aruna Irani, Iftekhar, Raj Mehra, Pinchoo Kapoor (Guest appearance), Sudhir Dalvi, Sundar, Birbal, Master Bittoo, Kuljeet, Sheetal, Madhu Chauhan, Lata Sinha, Ranveer Raj, Sunil Dhawan, Reeta Haksar, Baby Soniya, Nivedita, Ashok Saxena and others.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 28.12.1977.

“Apnaapan-1977” has five songs (one song had two parts i.e. ‘aadmi musaafir hai’) written by Anand Bakshi. Music for this movie was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal.

Here is the list of songs in this movie:-

SNo Song Title Singer/s Posted On
01 Somwaar ko ham miley Kishore Kumar, Sulakshana Pandit, chorus
02 Dil pe zaraa haath rakkh lo baabu Asha Bhonsle, chorus 24.01.2014
03 Aadmi musaafir hai (in two parts) Lata Mangeshkar, Mohd Rafi 01.01.2009
04 Is duniyaa mein jeenaa hai Kishore Kumar,Lata Mangeshkar
05 Main daddy se pyaar karti hoon Anuradha, Dilraj Kaur, chorus

It can been seen from the above table that two songs of this movie have so far been discussed on the blog.

Today we are going to listen to the third song from this movie. It is sung by Kishore Kumar and Sulakshana Pandit. Jeetendra and Sulakshana Pandit lip-sync this song on screen.

This is a simple song wherein the ‘two lovers’ share their ‘weekly schedule’ after their first meeting and how they missed each other the whole week and what is going to happen in the coming months of the year 🙂 . From the lyrics of the song I guess that they wish to get married in November 🙂

I have not watched this movie so I don’t know what happened to their ‘love-story’ and ‘twists’ in the story if any …

Let us enjoy this song now…

The song is picturised on Jeetendra, Mumtaz and others as a stage dance song. Housefull audience is seen in the picturisation. Roopesh Kumar clearly upto something villainous (such as switching off the lights just as the performance ends.:) ) is also visible in the audience.

Hullo Atuldom

Kaahe ko byaahi bides posted on 30 march 2014 is a post where I had thanked all the lyrics writers of film songs for highlighting emotions of human beings and particularly women. I had said “WOW” to writers who cared for feelings of the Female of the human species. Specially the feelings at the time of “Bidaai” after the wedding rituals.

In that post I had also mentioned that songs with the heading/ title “Kaahe ko byaahi bides” has appeared twice on the blog until that date -30/03/2014. It is nearly 9 years since and fresh reviewing shows that we have the following songs posted with the said title

Song Movie (Year) Date of post Remarks
Lakhi baabul mere kaaahe ko deenhi bides Suhaagraat (1948) 7 December 2011 Credited to Amir Khusro
Kaaahe ko byaahi bides Heer Ranjha (1948) 8 December 2011
Kaahe ko byaahi bides Nadirshah (1968) 25 February 2013
kaahe ko byaahi bides Aadha Din Aadhi Raat (1977) 30 March 2014
Kaahe ko byaahi bades Jailor (1938) 7 August 2018 (post by Arunji)
Kaahe ko byaahi bides re lakhi baabul morey Jhankaar(1942) 24 February 2020 (post by Arunji & credited to Amir Khusro.)
Kaahe ko byaahi bides Umraao Jaan (1981) 4 March 2022 (credited to Amir Khusro)

As can be seen from the above we have seven versions of “Kaahe ko byaahi bides” of which ‘suhaagraat”(1948) “Umrao Jaan” (1981) & ” Jhankaar” (1942) give credit to Amir Khusro for the song. One version each have been credited to Wali Sahab, Kamal Amrohi, Majrooh Sultanpuri & Anand Bakshi. Another interesting result of this review- two of the posts are exhaustive, highly informative writeups by our in-house encyclopaedia Shri Arunkumar Deshmukhji.

This is what he has said in his post dated 07/08/2018 about the use of this song in films :-

Today’s song is “Kaahe Ko Byaahi Bides”. This is a famous song by Amir Khusro. This has been used in several films like, Jhankaar-42, Heer Ranjha-48, Nadir Shah-68, Suhag Raat-48, Maang Bharo Sajna-80 and Umrao Jaan-2009, in addition to today’s song from film Jailor-38. It is also sung as a NFS by many famous singers. Mostly in films, the original song is mixed with some new lyrics and the credit is given to film’s lyricist. In film Jailor-38 too, the lyricist’s name is given as Kamal Amrohi.

All of what I have written above will make readers wonder where I am getting.

Of course I am presenting another version with this post. It is in the voice of Kavita Krishnamurthy, written by Anand Bakshi and tuned by Laxmi-Pyare. It is from the 1980 release “Maang Bharo Sajna” which was directed by T. Rama Rao and produced by A. Poornachandra Rao.

It had Rekha- Moushumi Chatterjee – Jeetendra heading a cast which also had Kajal Kiran, Asrani, Om Shivpuri, Parveen Paul, Yunus Parvez, Mohan Choti etc. The plot was essentially, an oft-repeated, melodrama where the hero falls in love & marries one heroine but has to, later, marry the other heroine who may have been selected by his family. At the time of the second marriage, the hero may believe that the first wife is dead or lost to him (as the case maybe) thus making the second marriage valid. Then the first wife will make a reappearance and then the complications will begin, leading to everyone being ready to sacrifice their love. Matters will get more interesting (for the audience) if the heroines are friends and infants are also present, then the climax will have one lady dying so that the other one live the rest of her life peacefully. This was the outline of most triangular love-stories, but was a hit-formula adopted by filmmakers to fill their coffers.

Today’s song comes at the close of the movie where we have a dying Rekha being accepted by Moushumi Chatterjee as her husband’s first wife. She instructs her husband to fill Rekha’s ‘Maang’ with Sindoor.

With this post we wish Kavita Krishnamurthy on turning a year older. This was one of her first recording for Hindi films. Of course, she had recorded ‘aayega aayega… aayega aanewaala” under Vilayat Khan’s music direction for “Kaadambari” (1975) and here is the post to that song as written by Sudhirji in his series “Songs Repeated In Hindi Films”.

That makes the song from “Kaadambari” her debut in Hindi films, which was followed by a song in Kannada under Bhaskar Chandavarkar’s music direction. Today’s song from “Maang Bharo Sajna” happened to be her first in the 1980s; however songs from “Pyar Jhukta Nahin” (1985) got her recognition; though there were other films between 1980 & 1985 were Kavita Krishnamurthy had sung songs most of which under Laxmi-Pyare’s music direction.

I had a very sweet experience last weekend. I got an opportunity to wish today’s birthday girl on the occasion of Sankranti. I interacted with her for a few minutes, wished her etc. She was gracious enough to let me click pictures with her. She told me that Bangalore is, now her favourite city, when I told her that I had met her once before too, on a flight from Bangalore to Mumbai.

Here is the song.

Hullo Atuldom

Indian films have seen many jodis (meaning duos) of writers, music directors, actors, actresses, hero-heroine etc. Something about these duos or pairs or jodis make them appealing in the minds of movie-watchers. Can we think of Dilip Kumar sans Madhubala, Raj Kapoor sans Nargis, Dharmendra sans Hema Malini, Amitabh Bachchan sans Shashi Kapoor or Vinod Khanna or Rishi Kapoor or many of the actresses that he was regularly paired with? Similarly we think of Salim Khan & Javed Akhtar in the same breath as also Husnlal-Bhagatram, Kalyanji- Anandji and Shankar- Jaikishan. What I have mentioned are pairs in Hindi films, I am sure there would have been & will be such pairs in films of other languages too and all of which were popular once upon a time & are still recalled fondly. When we speak of these pairs we cannot think of one without the other.

Shankar- Jaikishan is one entity as also Laxmikant- Pyarelal.

Shankar Singh Ram Singh Raghuwanshi was the older of the duo and was born on 15th October 1922. Jaikishan Dahyabhai Panchal was born on 4th November 1929. One played the tabla and learnt the art formally while the other was good at the harmonium. It is well known that the two met at office of a Gujarati movie director and developed a rapport which saw them work together at the Prithvi Theatre in Bombay (as Mumbai used to be called). Apart from following their musical pursuits they also played parts in plays staged at Prithvi. They paired up when Raj Kapoor assigned them the task of giving music for his “Barsaat” that released in 1949 and from there there was no looking back. They were a constant in all of Raj Kapoor’s films till 1970 when they gave award winning music to ‘Mera Naam Joker’. It is said that Raj Kapoor had a bank of tunes composed by this pair which he used in many of his subsequent movies but gave credit to the composers he had signed for that particular movie. Lata Mangeshkar and Mohd Rafi were the duos favourite playback singers but for them Mukesh was the voice for most of their songs filmed on Raj Kapoor and they patronized Manna Dey who sang many of their popular songs. They used Kishore Kumar for the iconic “zindagi ek safar hai suhana” They worked as a team with Hasrat Jaipuri and Shailendra but have popular songs with other lyricists too.

Today, on the occasion of Jaikishan’s birth anniversary we are revisiting the 1971 release “Ek Naari Ek Brahmachari”. It was said to be the remake of a 1968 released Telugu movie starring A. Nageshwara Rao- “Brahmachari”. I recall seeing the Hindi movie ages ago. On reading the synopsis of these movies I realized that I have seen this movie in Malayalam too as “Minnaram” (meaning Lighthouse/ Beacon) which came in 1994 with Mohanlal in the lead.

So “Ek Naari Ek Brahmachari” was the story of a young man (Jeetendra) who is an avowed Brahmachari (that means espoused celibacy). His collegemate likes him because of his good character. But circumstances lead to the lady entering the brahmachari’s home claiming to be his child’s mother and putting him in a spot. As the movie progresses misunderstandings created among the members of the brahmachari’s family are cleared and the identity of the real parents of the child is revealed.

The following two songs of the movie are present on the blog:

Blog post number Song Date of post

15990 Aapke peechhe pad gayi main 24 october 2020

Here is the next. It is sung by Mohd. Rafi and has Jeetendra lip-syncing. It is written by Kiran Kalyani (never heard this name before). The song has a lovely prelude which is the signature of the S-J duo.

tu devta samaan hai
sunayega jo tu mujhe
sunaayega jo tu mujhe
vo faisla kubool hai
vo faisala kubool hai
kamal hai kaun taal ka
tu kis chaman ka phul hai
charaag kis ke ghar ka hai

ulajh gayi hai aatma
bata de aaj sach hai kya
ki kaun laage tu mera
o nanhe munne devta
o nanhe munne devta
tu kis ke man ki bhool hai
tu kis ke man ki bhool hai
kamal hai kaun taal ka
tu kis chaman ka phul hai
charaag kis ke ghar ka hai
