1950s was the decade when Hindi movie music found its feet and the rules of Hindi movie songs were established.
1950s was before my time and during my young age, I regarded the songs of 1950s as “puraani filmon ke geet” and therefore boring. But now I feel that this decade offers a treasure of great songs. I have discussed a large number of songs from this decade and still lots of songs from this decade remain undiscussed.
Here is a song from this decade. It is sung by Lata nd it is picturised on Meena Kumari. No, it is not a weepy Meena Kumari, but a cheerful one. It is from “Yahudi” (1958) when Meena Kumari had yet to discover weepy roles.
This song is a cheerful song where Meena Kumari is seen in a chirpy mood, as befits someone in love.
This song is written by Shailendra and the music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan.
I heard this song for the first time only just now, and that makes this song a forgotten gem by my definition even though others may already be aware of this song.

Very lovely Atul. You’re right, the rules were established in the 50s. I think they also came with people like Lata entering the industry (the success of Mahal). There are new rules now yet again and actors are doing their own singing. I like the old way — we need good music and good singers.
